For decades, desperate parents have turned to wilderness camps, therapeutic boarding schools, and residential treatment centers to help their struggling teens. But behind the marketing promises and glossy brochures lies a hidden world of abuse, neglect, and psychological trauma. In this episode, we pull back the curtain on the troubled teen industry—a loosely regulated system where vulnerable youth are often subjected to isolation, forced labor, and emotional manipulation in the name of treatment.

Through survivor testimonies, expert insights, and investigative reporting, we trace how this billion-dollar industry has flourished in the shadows, often with little oversight. Why is it still happening? Who's benefiting? And what can be done to protect the next generation of teens? Tune in for a sobering look at an industry that's long overdue for a reckoning.

At the center of this growing movement for reform is pop culture icon Paris Hilton, who has used her platform to shine a light on the abuse she endured at Provo Canyon School in Utah.

We explore the origins and evolution of the troubled teen industry, the systemic issues that allow it to continue unchecked, and how survivors like Paris are driving legislative change.

Joseph and Paula bring you Part 1 of one of their most listened to episodes. They will continue to bring you these Encore episodes in between their new ones, as requested by many listeners.

We continue to be grateful for the engagement.

This multi-episode topic is a tough one. Joseph and Paula are talking about abuse. This is not a pleasant topic, but definitely a necessary one. According to the National Statistics on Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people each minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. For one year, this equates to more than 10 million women and men. Those figures only take into account domestic violence. We are covering 8 different types of abuse. We are examining the different types of abuse, their symptoms, and how to seek support if you find yourself experiencing any of them and how to support a person who has.

Part 1 addresses Physical, Emotional, and Verbal Abuse.

Due to the nature of the content, we hope you will take care while listening.

Have you ever wondered why you react a certain way in stressful situations? Or why sometimes you seem to push uncomfortable thoughts out of your mind? These responses are often the result of defense mechanisms.

Defense mechanisms are subconscious strategies that our mind uses to protect us from anxiety, uncomfortable thoughts, or feelings. They shape the way we interact with the world and can significantly influence our behavior and relationships.

In this episode, we'll talk through some of the most common defense mechanisms, such as denial, repression, projection, and rationalization. We'll explore how these mechanisms manifest in our daily lives, their origins, and the role they play in our psychological well-being.

Whether you're a psychology enthusiast, a student, or someone seeking to understand themselves better, this episode will provide valuable insights into the complex machinery of the human psyche.

This is the third part in the series where Joseph and Paula talk about abuse. This part covers self-harm and sexual abuse. Part 2 addressed Psychological, Financial, and Spiritual Abuse. #Scientology Due to the nature of the content, we hope you will take care while listening. To review our information, you can visit the website we acquired our sourced material at HealthyPlace.com.Should you need support for any of the topics we discuss, please use any of these hotlines: Child Abuse Hotline – 1-800-4-A-CHILD (800 422 4453) National Domestic Violence Hotline – 1-800-799-7233 Missing & Exploited Children Hotline - 1-800-843-5678 Suicide Hotline: Dial 988 4UTrevor for gay and questioning youth - 1-866-488-7386If you have a question, you would like Joseph and Paula to answer during an episode of Questions for Counselors, feel free to reach out through the website at www.lifelivedbetter.net or email them directly at Info@lifelivedbetter.netYou can find information about this and other episodes on the website: www.lifelivedbetter.net.Just a reminder - anything shared by the pair during this and all other episodes is based on personal experiences and opinions. The Uvalde school shootings, the shootings in Philadelphia during fireworks show, and in Illinois during a 4th of July parade.

The Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, followed by the clarence Thomas statement that he was not finished with overturning laws.

The chaos these events have left us in and the hatred and vitriol occurring around us daily can be more to deal with than we think we can endure.

We do not wish to ask anyone to change their mind about their personal beliefs, but we do want to have this conversation because it impacts our daily mental health and peace. Our aim is to discuss how to keep personal peace in the midst of such chaos and how to get some distance from the chaos.
