Dear Ted & Amy,
My sister and her husband stopped attending family gatherings. It was gradual at first; they’d attend a party for 10 minutes sometimes then leave to go hang with friends. They’ll attend immediate family gatherings but not extended. They recently missed out on a family reunion on my father’s side because they’d rather “watch fireworks.” This reunion meant a lot to my family; people from all over flew in from out of town. I believe my sister’s husband is the problem, but she won’t acknowledge the issue. She changes the subject or hangs up on me when I try to talk to her about it. My parents are aging and don’t understand why they won’t attend gatherings either. Am I overreacting?

Austin writes: My name is Austin and I’ve always had a struggle with addiction throughout my Teenage years and beyond. Sober now this tattoo has more meaning to me than it ever has. I’ve had this tattoo for 8 years and when I first got it done it was a random Tuesday morning and my tattoo artist at the time posted this drawing on his Facebook page and it hit me that I needed it done immediately. This tattoo embodies what pulled me out of so many dark places and for me that was art. Whether it was drawing or painting or even building something artwork and dedication to it has helped me stay alive some days. Now my artwork looks a little different than painting and drawing for me it looks like welding and fabrication, building something from scratch with my bare hands that’s what gives me the drive to keep going every day and stay sober one day at a time. Every time I look down at it Im reminded of a darker part of time in my life but also what pulled me out of that dark time of my life.

Dear Ted and Amy,
We’re currently planning a vacation with my in-laws in August, and by “planning,” I mean they have planned it. It started innocently enough—“Let’s all take a trip together!”—which sounded fun in theory. But now, weeks before we leave, every day has a schedule, and every schedule has a backup schedule in case the first schedule doesn’t reach its full potential. There are planned meal times, activity blocks, and something labeled “flex time,” which I’m almost certain is just a cleverly disguised additional activity. Meanwhile, I’m over here thinking a vacation plan is, “We’ll figure it out when we get there,” maybe with a loose commitment to finding snacks at some point. To be fair, it’s coming from a good place. They’re excited. They want everyone to have a great time. I’m just worried that half-way through the week, I will lose whatever patience I packed. How should I handle this if it just gets too much?

Dear Ted and Amy,
My family has been blessed to have a camp on a nearby lake for years. My Dad passed away 2 years ago and my sister and I inherited it. Luckily we get along and our families have a great time together. There's one person who likes to cause some problems and that's my brother-in-law. We have set up lots of very fair rules that have worked. They have a beautiful boat. We always buy the gas. We have 2 jet skis. Needless to say we try really hard to make sure things are even financially for everyone. He’s pretty strict about just HIM driving the boat and that’s never been an issue. But our girls wanted to go tubing for the first time. They are 5 and almost 7. They've always been timid about it. We asked him to take it easy and he just refused. They were screaming and begging him to stop or slow down. He said "They are fine, this is how they learn to not be afraid. My son used to be a baby about too, and I just kept doing it until he learned to love it". I told him I didn't think his actions were appropriate. He said "Well you don't have to use the boat anymore". What should I do for future weekends? Am I being overly protective?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I love my sister but I’m really angry right now. I feel like she ruined my recent wedding even though I think (I hope) her intentions were good. She and I are very different. She is a total extrovert – gorgeous, funny, athletic, musically talented – you name it. I am not. I’ve struggled with self-esteem for as long as I can remember. I have always tried to be very supportive of her and her of me. But it’s hard to compete so most times, I don’t even try. Which is why I was very specific that on my wedding day, I, for once, wanted to be the center of attention. She was my maid of honor and of course looked beautiful. But I specially asked her not to make herself the center of attention during my big day. I wanted to be the special one. All was fine . . . until the speeches. Instead of just a toast of how honored she is to be my sister and how happy she is for me, SHE DECIDED TO SING IT. Yes, in her beautiful voice, with lyrics that she wrote about me and my husband. It was very good. Everyone loved it. But then guess what? The whole night became about her. People kept coming up to her telling her how funny she is, and what a great voice she has, and how she made the wedding so fun! Really?? All I could think about is that she did it again. I haven’t said anything because I know everyone will tell me I’m jealous and insecure. And maybe I am. But I’m also very hurt because I specifically asked her NOT to do exactly this. Am I overreacting or should I call her out on it for putting a damper on MY special day?

Brittany writes: I have a brother named Nick, and we are really close. Nick and I didn’t always know that we were brother and sister; we met each other when I was around 12 years old. Since then it’s been an inseparable brother and sister bond and I couldn’t imagine how I went so long without him. One of the ways I used to get my brother going on a rant was by telling him that I was going to get a face tattoo. He always told me if I got one he would not be happy. I’m an EMT and on the night of October 17th I was working and I heard a cardiac arrest go out. That cardiac arrest turned out to be my brother. My life changed forever that night and I miss my brother every day. Shortly after my brother died, I went and got “Nick” tattooed right on my face as a final “I win!” it’s a small tattoo that carries so much significance, I always tell everybody I’ll deal with the consequences when my brother and I meet again.

People tell me it’s beautiful and they wish they had hair like mine, but on a hot summer day when it’s frizzy like I just got struck by lightning, I wonder if they might feel differently if they were me. Growing up as the only child of my single father who raised me on his own, I haven’t had many people in my life with a ton of hair (sorry dad! you look great bald!) to show me what to do with the mop on top of my head. Dear Ted and Amy,
I'm dating a guy who has been nothing but loving... until last weekend when something kind of weird happened. He moved to this area recently for a job so he doesn’t really know anyone from here. But we just happened to see one of his former coworkers who has family in the area and the guy mentioned that he’s glad my boyfriend has been able to move on. When I asked him about it, he got super weird and refused to talk about it. But I finally got out of him that his first wife had died a couple of years ago and that’s another reason why he decided to move and start over. Since then, he's been distant and cagey. He never told me he was even married. Now I’m wondering if he is hiding something. Why would he not tell me his wife passed away?

Julie writes: For our 10 year anniversary, my husband asked if I wanted to get tattoos. Fully expecting a hard “NO”, he was surprised when I said “SURE!” We went in and sat down with the tattoo artist, only knowing that we wanted something to symbolize our family. We ended up getting matching tattoos; I got mine around my ankle and he got his around his muscle on his arm. It is our names as well as our four daughters. Fast forward to almost five years ago when our two oldest daughters got married, we thought it was only appropriate to add our son-in-laws names to our family tattoo. We Facetimed them both as we were getting the tattoos, much to their surprise! (That’s when you know that you’ve got two great son-in-laws, when you feel confident enough to put their names on your body!!). Mine has now changed into a family tree and now that we have just gotten our first grandson and are expecting our first granddaughter in June, we will be adding their names to our ever growing family tattoo. This year marks 32 years of marriage for us!!

Dear Ted and Amy,
I need some help because my wife and I have hit a vacation argument that I honestly don’t understand.Every summer, she starts looking at places we can travel. She’ll send me links to beach towns, mountain resorts, and vacation rentals in other states. Meanwhile, I’m sitting there wondering why we’d spend thousands of dollars to leave one of the most beautiful places in the country during the best time of year.The weather is perfect, the lakes are gorgeous, the mountains are green, and people literally travel here to vacation. Celebrities come through here every summer. We spend eight months of the year waiting for this weather, and then the minute it arrives, my wife wants to leave.Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy traveling. If it’s the middle of winter and you want to find some sunshine. My wife says that’s exactly why we should travel. She says vacations aren’t just about finding a prettier place. They’re about experiencing something different, getting away from responsibilities, and making memories together. She thinks I’m being boring and acting like we’ve already seen everything there is to see.Shouldn’t we be taking advantage of living in such a beautiful area and enjoying what we have, or is my wife right that sometimes you need to leave paradise for a little while just to experience something new?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I want to reclaim hosting Thanksgiving from my daughter and I don’t know how to do it without hurting her feelings. I’ve hosted Thanksgiving since my kids were young and I took over from my mom. We have the room for it and I love to have all of the kids, and now their spouses and my grandkids come over. But two years ago, my daughter and her husband bought their own house and she insisted that she wanted to have Thanksgiving. She really tries her best and we all try to bring something to help her out. But her house is small, she has pets, (which means a lot of pet hair that may or may not be taken care of when company comes) and she works full time. I get that this means a lot to her now that she’s all grown up and she wants to show that she can entertain family holidays. But it’s just not the same and the rest of the family, privately, agrees that our house may be a better choice. I will be glad that she can take over when I can’t do it anymore but I’m entirely capable at this point in my life to still host. How do I break it to her gently?

November Makeover – April!
Please help!! We all know kids are the most honest people, too honest most of the time. My five year old randomly told me I need a makeover. He said my hair needs some pink ( not needed but I am open to ideas lol), and to make my face not old anymore.
Not sure how much you can help with that, but I’ve always looked the same my whole life and I’m ready to surprise my little one with a new mommy as recommended by him. I am almost forty and would love the opportunity to look as young as I feel some days. I’ve seen the previous magic be done by you girls, and no way you can disappoint. My sister followed our father and oldest brother's footsteps by serving in the military after college. She went in as a nurse. There, she met her husband, who was also in the service. He was from Iowa. They both served in the Gulf war, sending their precious dog home for me to care for while they were deployed. After their served time was over, they had two children and moved home to Camden. They continue to serve those in need, by working in the medical field and fostering dogs. Their two children also went on to serve in the military, one working with animals and the other with computers. They are truly a special family.

Dear Ted and Amy,
I did alterations for a coworker for the dress and pantsuit she was wearing for her daughter's wedding and rehearsal dinner. She gave the items to me with two pins in them and said give it a slight bit more. I hemmed them and she paid me what I asked, plus. My problem is, when I saw the pictures from the wedding, she was not wearing either outfit. I don't know if I should say something or not. Did I do the alterations wrong, or did she just change her mind about wearing them? Changing her mind would be weird since it was her daughter's wedding and usually you get a dress specifically for the event. I don't know how to bring it up without it being really awkward or one of us feeling bad. I'm hoping you can help.

My dad served in the Army in World War II. He was in the First Division of the Infantry, the legendary Big Red One. He fought in North Africa and Italy, and was at Normandy at D-Day. He fought at Anzio and the Battle of the Bulge. He helped save the world and them came home to have a family and raise five kids. He became a professor at LeMoyne College and taught hundreds of students who became teachers. Through those teachers, his goodness and honor have sent out ripples of love and care to future generations.
I would love to have you honor the man that I loved so much, Staff Sargent Breese F. Barbour. The photo is of my dad before he deployed for the war. He is with my grandfather, Breese F. Barbour, Sr., who was in First Division in World War One.

In 2000 my husband, Michael Burke of Syracuse enlisted in the army at the Syracuse Army Recruiting battalion and in July 2021, he retired from where he started as executive officer of the Syracuse Army recruiting battalion after 21 1/2 years of service. Mike proudly served his country as a US Army ranger and deployed multiple times to Kosovo, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan where he listened to 93Q on iHeartRadio for a little taste of home . Mike truly loves the US Army and fully embraces his “soldier for life “ status. His love of the army has not stopped since he retired, as he gladly talks to any young person, considering joining the military - Including our own two sons who are both active duty Army. No one is more proud of their soldier than I am. Not only did I get to meet my hero, I was lucky enough to marry him.

This is my husband, Sergeant Vincent Spadafora, who proudly served in the US Army from 1967 to 1970 during the Vietnam War. He served as a Photo Journalist and Broadcaster. He wrote several articles for the Stars and Stripes newspaper. Vinnie survived two close calls, once a radio station he was working in was blown up and another time a helicopter he was in was shot down. He was injured and had to live the rest of his life with shrapnel still in his body. Vinnie’s “Blackhorse” 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment saw action in the summer of 1968 when the North Vietnamese were threatening Saigon. After two days of heavy fighting, the Regiment drove them away. On May 1970, the Blackhorse stood ready to spearhead the Allied incursion into Cambodia. Massive fire strikes by B-52’s had already prepared the target area, then the Blackhorse crossed into Cambodia. The Regiment was ordered to force-march 40 kilometers in 48 hours further north to capture the City of Seoul. Vinnie was awarded Purple Heart Medal/Ribbon, Air Medal, Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal/Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal/Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal/Ribbon, Vietnam Service Medal/Ribbon and Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal/Ribbon. When Vinnie returned home he spent more than 40 years as a teacher/Professor/Department Head of the now Broadcast Media Department at OCC. Vinnie passed away on March 15, 2013.

Dear Ted and Amy,
I recently started dating this guy and we just got to the stage where we will sleep over at each other's place. Well, the other night, I rolled over and opened my eyes. There was a dim light and I could see his face. To my horror, he was completely still, and his eyes were wide open. He was dead and I screamed!!! I then was startled more when he sat up in bed and asked me what was going on. I told him that I thought he was dead because his eyes were open. He said that he should have told me, but it sounds weird. He sometimes will sleep with his eyes open. I have never heard of this in my life! Not gonna lie, I was a bit shook in that moment and I still am now. We have had two other nights in bed together since and I notice that I am not sleeping nearly as well. I also keep looking over at my boyfriend to watch him sleep with his eyes open. It's not occasional . . . it's constant. Is this shallow to think that this might be a deal breaker?

Pamela Conner of Deerfield writes:
Ray Plevyak was my great uncle, my grandma’s brother, whom I unfortunately never had the honor and privilege of meeting. He was a First Lieutenant in the Air Force and was the pilot of an F-51D Mustang fighter with the 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron, 18th Fighter Bomber Wing in the Korean War. On March 1, 1952, while on a combat mission with three other aircraft, their aircraft took anti-aircraft fire. Uncle Ray never returned and was listed as Missing in Action and eventually was presumed Killed in Action on December 31, 1953. His remains have never been found, nor was his aircraft. I heard all my life that he wasn’t meant to be flying that day, it was his day off. He had been asked to cover for someone else in his squadron and had agreed. I always wondered if that was true. I recently found out that in the official report from all members of his squadron after he went missing, this was indeed the case.
On August 9, 2024, the House of Representatives honored his life and sacrifice with an official entry in the Congressional Record. On October 23, 2024, more than 72 years after he was last seen, he finally received a full honors service, including a memorial headstone marker, honor detail, priest, military band, and gun salute at Arlington National Cemetery. Nearly 50 family members attended. Only 2 of Uncle Ray’s 10 siblings are still alive and the ceremony was held on his surviving sister Helen’s 105th Birthday.
The DPAA (Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency) works diligently to recover unaccounted Department of Defense personnel listed as prisoners of war or missing in action from designated past conflicts, from countries around the world. We continue to hope that one day Uncle Ray will be brought home.
Thank you 93Q for the Veteran’s Spotlight and thank you to all of our Veterans and their families. Freedom is not free and we must always recognize and honor our Veterans!

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’d really like a redo of my fiancé's proposal. Before you give me a hard time about being shallow, let me just say I’ve dreamed of how I was going to get engaged since I was little. The dream was not at the Renaissance Festival this year, which is where he did it. It’s not like there’s any sentimental value there. We’ve never been before. But when he said his whole family wanted to go over the summer, I was game. Here’s where it all went wrong. I had the worst clothes on. I was sweaty. I believe there was turkey grease on my chin from my giant turkey leg eating just previous to the engagement. And my nails were not ready for an engagement shot. Of course, his brother got the whole thing on video. I said yes just to not embarrass him but I really want a redo. It’s not like I don’t want to marry him, but gees, one would think he’d know me a little better. Should I talk to him and tell him that my “once in a lifetime” proposal was not that, and I’d like to get something more appropriate?

This is Ellen. She was given to me by a friend of my parents–presumably not Satan. I have had her since I was 3 or 4 years old and we were approximately the same height. (Back then, she also had hair and lovely blue eyes.) Throughout my early childhood, she was my somewhat undersized judo partner as well as a willing football blocking buddy. Although these days she spends a fair amount of time in my basement, (which probably accounts for her milky eyes) every October she emerges to be the crown jewel of the SU Law Library’s Halloween display. She is pictured here with her BFF, “Mr. Bunny” who is also a survivor of my childhood. I love them both.

Several years ago, we wandered into an estate sale in Hamilton, NY. The house belonged to someone who had recently passed under mysterious circumstances, and every possession was laid bare by the family for strangers to claim. Among the forgotten relics was a doll—just one of many discarded items. But something about this doll was different. It didn’t just catch our eye… it called to us. We couldn’t ignore it. There was an unsettling aura about it, something far beyond its lifeless stare, and before we knew it, we were compelled to take it home. Since then, it has become a permanent fixture in our game room. And in its presence, the room has never felt quite the same.

I'm dealing with an office romance at my place of employment. I've listened to your Group Therapy segments before and know that this is a big no no. It's between two of my coworkers and I'm not sure how to ignore it! First of all, one of them is married so that's a big ick for me. Secondly, they're often hanging out so much and not getting their work done that I'm having to pick up their slack. I’ve gotten asked where they are by other coworkers when they mysteriously are both not around at the same time and it’s just annoying as I know but I guess I’m supposed to cover. So my question is, how can I ignore this? They've always both been nice to me. Truthfully I don't even think they know that I know, but they're dumb if they think that they're being discreet!

Dear Ted and Amy,
I volunteer for a charity organization in town and put a lot of my own time and effort into it. My husband and I don't have much money to donate so we feel like our time is just as valuable. But here is my question - if a person wins a money raffle for an organization that they volunteer for, are they obligated to donate all the money back? It's always so awkward for people who win them if everyone sees that they keep the money. Dear Ted and Amy,13 years ago I left a lucrative job in Florida, and moved to North Carolina to care for my Mom. I lived with and cared for her for 12 years - even cashing in two 401ks to pay off her medical bills and redo her house. My life became hers. I never had a day off to myself. I was always taking her to doctor appointments, or whatever she needed and working 50-60 hours a week, on top of being a full-time caregiver. I have 3 siblings who did nothing for her - it was all me. When she died, she left a small life insurance policy to me. When I moved from NC I left my most precious things with a sibling’s daughter to pick them up later. Now that family took those things and will not give them back until they get their "share" of the money. I want to sue them to get my things back. Do you think they deserve any money? Signed,

Dear Ted and Amy,
I have a daughter in high school and suddenly, this school year, there seems to be an issue with teachers allowing students to use the bathroom when needed. I am a teacher as well, and I understand that there are always kids who tend to abuse bathroom privileges. However we all need to be able to use the restroom when we need to. Females, specifically, (especially high school aged females), need to use the restroom for personal reasons. In addition, many of these kids are on medications for acne, etc. requiring them to drink more water. Many of them play sports or are just active all day, again requiring them to drink more water, and therefore need to use the restroom more frequently.With that being said, why are teachers telling these kids, “no using the bathrooms today…” and not allowing them to go? I would agree that restrictions should be placed on a specific student who “misuses” the restroom, but to generalize all of them and not allow them to use the bathrooms when needed is just plain inhumane.I am a teacher in the district where my daughter attends school, and I am trying to decide whether or not to reach out to someone and address this issue, and also WHO to reach out to. I have been very upset these last few weeks of school when I hear my child come home and tell me that she asked a teacher several times to use the bathroom and was told, “no.” She then decided to flat out say, “I can’t wait that long and I am going,” only to have that teacher act with hostility toward her the next class.I think this is ridiculous and I am not sure what or if I can do anything about it. What should I do?

I'm a female in my 30s, never married and no kids. I'm educated, have a good 6 figure career, own my own home, car, etc. I sound like a good catch right? So why is it that men have such a hard time telling me that they love me? I was with my last boyfriend for almost 3 years. Not once did he say “I love you”. He was horrible to me and I broke up with him after I caught him cheating for the 3rd time. After him, I was single, by choice, for about 1 and a half years.Surprisingly, I think I may have actually finally found a good guy. He’s thoughtful and kind to me, and I really enjoy his company. The thing that’s been on my mind though - we’ve been dating for about 8 months and he hasn’t told me he loves me yet either. In fact, he told me his love “has to be earned”.So I’d like to know by what point in a relationship everyone thinks “I love you’s” should be said by before considering the fact that the guy maybe doesn’t actually love you.I’m not looking for comments like “why is this so important to you?” Or “Just communicate your feelings with him” or “what does it matter - actions speak louder than words”. I just want opinions on a number- by 6 months in? A year?Am I crazy to think this is weird? I just don't want to waste my time again.

Dear Ted and Amy,
I recently attended my husband’s ten year high school reunion. I’m not from around here and our romance progressed pretty quickly so I don’t know a lot of his old friends. We just got married this summer. We are mingling and he is introducing me around. He introduced me to this very pretty girl who said “Congratulations on your wedding. I guess you’re not going to need your Plan B after all”. They both kind of laughed and we moved on. I was pretty confused but of course I asked him about it when we got home. Apparently that was his girlfriend on and off in high school and they had a pact that if neither of them got married by the time they were 30, they would marry each other. They would be each other’s “Plan B”. They stayed in touch on and off it appears, until I came on the scene. I’m not sure how I feel about that. Should I be jealous? He says she is still single and she wasn’t with anyone at the reunion. Should I worry about him regretting the decision to sweep me off my feet? Or is Plan B a really common thing and I should just be grateful I was Plan A?

Dear Ted & Amy,
13 years ago, a family member that I am very close to gave me a beautiful solid wood dining set because they were moving into a smaller home. This set moved with me several times, but at our last house it suffered some damage at the hands (or paws) of our new rescue pup. Once we realized the extent of it, we put the set into storage to prevent any further damage, with the intent of refinishing it someday. A few months ago, this person told me they would like to give the table to another family member- I told them it was pretty scratched up and would need to be refinished first, which they said they would take care of. When they came to see the table, they acted completely shocked and disgusted, and have stopped speaking to me altogether. I don't really know how to feel about this- it's not like the table was damaged on purpose, and had I known it was meant to be passed down through the family- I probably wouldn't have taken it in the first place. Am I in the wrong here?

I am 26 and have been dating my boyfriend for 5 years. We live together and have a great relationship, other than how his family treats me.My boyfriend’s family has a history of leaving me out of family events. I thought it would get better once we started living together and got older, but it hasn’t, even when he has talked to them about how it hurts me..My boyfriend’s younger sister turned 21 a few months ago, and their parents decided to take the whole family on a trip to celebrate. His immediate family as well as multiple extended family members were invited, but she requested that I not go. I have always made an effort to connect with his little sister and to my knowledge the only reason she doesn't like me is because her brother spends so much time with me. I told him that he should go on the trip to prevent her from having more animosity towards me. My boyfriend agreed, and thought that his family would be nicer to me and make more of an effort because of this.It’s been months since the trip, and his sister refuses to talk to me. She has had my number blocked for months and won’t have a conversation with me. I thought giving her space would help things, but she still does not want me around. My boyfriend is headed to a bachelor’s party weekend out of town next weekend. One of his best friends is getting married and they are all renting a house on a beach and actually chose a place where none of the guys live. And here’s the deal – when they get there, the groom has insisted that they lock up all of their cell phones and don’t use them all weekend. Obviously they are there for an emergency. But he says that way they can have a great time together as friends and there will be no photos of any of the dumb stuff that they get into. I think it’s cool that they want to make good memories. But now I’m very upset about the memories that they don’t want captured on camera! I’m trying not to be that jealous girlfriend but it’s annoying that if I want to reach him, I have to either wait until he calls me, or is headed home. Dear Ted and Amy,
My work-bestie is getting married and has invited some of our coworkers to attend. She hasn't invited everyone from work, but has picked about 3 or 4 of us who she's friends with outside of work. I’m currently not dating anyone but she did give me a “plus one”. Well, one of our co-workers, who wasn't invited, has asked to be my "plus one" at her wedding. I wasn't thinking anything about it, and told her that I'd take her. The problem is that now she’s bragging to everyone about how she's going to the wedding and kind of rubbing it in everyone's face. The bride-to-be really didn't make a big deal about her wedding at work, but now my plus one is. Not only that, but she's saying things like, "I can't believe she didn't think to invite me in the first place" and other weird comments. Should I tell the bride or should I tell my plus one to forget it?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I am divorced and I just moved my two daughters, 11 and 13, and me to a new apartment. Pretty quickly I learned that my neighbor likes to watch porn - loud. So loud that it comes through for me and my daughters to hear it every day. Apparently the walls in our apartment building are very thin. I don’t need to go into detail but let’s just say it’s pretty clear it’s porn. I know it sounds funny but I don't know what to do. I'll turn the TV up to drown it out sometimes but then my kids can't concentrate on their homework when they’re in school and it’s obnoxious just in general. Do I go and say something? I mean, I’m the brand new tenant so I already feel like I’m at a disadvantage here. How would that conversation even go?

My fiancé and I are planning our wedding. My future mother-in-law recently sat us down and told us that she thought our wedding would be the perfect setting for her and my father-in law to renew their vows. She said she didn’t expect us to want it during the actual ceremony but they’d be happy to wait until the reception. We were kind of taken aback and both of us just told her we’d think about it. Don’t you think that’s kind of weird? I certainly don’t want to rock the boat with my MIL but it seems like this would definitely take the limelight off us for our special day. How do we break it to her gently that choosing another day to renew their vows might be the best choice and then we’d be all in!

Our oldest child is five so we're just kind of getting into this attending kid's birthday party thing. But what is normal when it comes to food at a kid's party? We thought that when a party falls on an off meal hour, say 2 - 4, there might be a few snacks around and then cake. But when it falls during regular lunch or dinner, wouldn't you think that some sort of food would be served? We've been to two parties lately, one that started at noon and the other that started at 5 and other than a bowl of snacks and then a cake, there was no food to be had! It's just kind of weird to take up a family's entire dinner hour and when you leave at seven, you have to stop and eat elsewhere. I don't need steak but gees, a pizza slice might be nice. Maybe we're the ones who have it wrong. Or maybe things have just changed since we were kids. Signed,

Dear Ted and Amy,
Can you tell me if ghosting is "an understood thing" that everyone does now? I'm recently divorced after a 10 year marriage and I feel like I’m finally ready to get back out there. I was casually talking to a guy that I work with and we made plans to meet up for drinks after work on Friday a few weeks ago. When Friday rolled around, he didn't say anything to me – he even saw me during the day in a meeting. Then after work, no text, no follow up, no nothing. I later found out that he was talking to another woman and apparently had chosen her to meet out that night. Then I met someone on a dating app and we were going to meet for lunch. The day rolls around and he is ALSO a no show! We had exchanged numbers so cancelling the date before I actually got to the restaurant would have taken about a minute. I know I've been out of the dating game for awhile but is ghosting an understood reality of dating in 2024? If not, I’m starting to think it’s me! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Ted and Amy,
My husband and I started saving for our son's college when he was a baby. We had a small amount set aside from each paycheck. By the time he turned 18 this year, there was $200,000 ready to send him to almost any school he chose. As high school graduation approached, my son chose to get a job instead repairing boats. He has spent the last 3 years doing it part time and is making decent money. He says he could make a lot more if he opened his own business, but that's going to cost money. He has asked us for his college fund to do it. I think it is a fair request, as the college fund was simply money we set aside to lay the foundation for our son's future. My husband disagrees and says that a college fund is for college. He says that businesses fail and go away, but college degrees do not. We haven’t seemed to be able to have a civil discussion about it. Does my son deserve his college fund to open a business or should we wait to see if he needs it in the future?

My spouse and I recently attended a spring concert for one of our children, as many of us do at this time of the year. We arrived at the school and dropped our child off with their teacher at the correct time. When we went into the auditorium to find seats, it seemed like we were late, as many seats were already filled. As many of us have experienced, some seats that appeared empty, were in fact being saved by a family member who had not yet arrived. I don't have a problem with this, as I have done it myself for my spouse. What I have an issue with, is the two people who were holding an entire section of about 15-18 seats for their entire group. I think it's incredibly rude to hold that many seats when people are walking around looking for seats for the concert. Am I in the majority or minority with this line of thinking? At what point does it go from an inconvenience to others to rude/selfish with holding a number of seats?Signed,

I hope that you and the listeners can settle an argument between my husband and me. Do you think that it's okay to take your own leftovers home from a gathering? We were invited to a BBQ over the weekend. Our job was to bring dessert and whatever we wanted to drink. So, we brought a big thing of fresh cookies from Costco, a bottle of wine for me and a six pack of beer for my husband. When we went to leave, there was still half a bottle of wine, 3 beers and about a dozen cookies. My husband packed all of that to take with us! I didn’t want to make a big deal in front of our hosts but in the car, I explained that it was rude, because they hosted and that you are supposed to leave that stuff behind. He said that it's ours and we should get to take it home. What's the right thing to do?

Dear Ted and Amy,
Our family just moved to a new neighborhood and we were thrilled that we have a yard for our kids to play outside, even though the houses are super close. Overall we’ve loved it. But our immediate next door neighbors are a couple with no kids. His wife won’t let him smoke inside, so he comes outside and smokes probably 20 – 25 times a day. He might work overnight or something because he seems to be home a lot. I stay home with my kids and the porch where he smokes is probably 10 feet from our house. Unfortunately I can’t stand the smell of cigarettes – it gives me a headache. I also hate to see our kids getting all of this secondhand smoke. I’ve tried talking to him but he kind of has this “I was here first” attitude. His wife just hates his smoking in general and I think she’s just grateful that he goes outside. Any suggestion on handling this guy and not creating a big neighborhood feud?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’m having a problem with my mom. She is 80 years old and lives about 5 hours away from me. We have had a strained relationship for most of my adult life. She is an intelligent person that has worked in finance for most of her career. I just recently learned that she believes that she has won a sweepstakes prize of $2.5 million. She has given away $73,000 to these people and wants to give them another $30,000 in hopes of getting the 2.5 million. My husband and I have spoken with her several times trying to convince her that she is being scammed and to not give any more money to these people. Her financial advisor has been in contact with me and they want to file a fraud report. I told her we were going to drive to her and help her file a police report and gather the information that her financial advisor needs. She adamantly told me that she did not want our help. She is convinced that she is getting this “prize” money. I had a pretty big blow up on the phone with her because I’m very frustrated that she is allowing herself to be taken advantage of and is refusing our help. I told her that I’m done with her and our relationship and she’s on her own, I’m not bailing her out. Am I being too harsh or is it time for me to stop with this toxic relationship that brings nothing to me but heartache and aggravation?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’ve been going to the same barber for about a year now. I’m very happy with the haircut every time. Since I go every 3 weeks or so, I’ve gotten to know him personally. He is a skilled, professional barber with a fun personality. Last week, he was on vacation so I had another barber in the same shop cut my hair. He did an awesome job….I don’t think I have ever had a haircut I’ve been happier with. And his personality was fun and professional. My group therapy question. How do I go about switching barbers (within the same shop), without having hard feelings with my original barber? They both work the same schedule, so I can’t schedule without him being there.This is a minor problem compared to most. But what is the proper etiquette in a situation like this?

National Salvation Army Week is observed the second full week of May and was first national proclaimed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954 in the US. We will be focusing on a number of different programs that the Salvation Army of Syracuse provides as part of this celebration. This week we look at the Senior Services Program and speak to Patrick Banks, the Neighborhood Advisor, Information and Assistance Case Manager and Social Day Case Manager for the Salvation Army.
The Functional Family Therapy (FFT) program providing by the Salvation Army focuses on decreasing and eliminating substance use in youth ages eleven to 18 as well as their families. Sonia Grovner is the FFT Supervisor for the Salvation Army.

Dear Ted and Amy
My boyfriend and I have been together a year and a half. He owns a home and I rent. He stays at my place until we figure out if we move in together but he’s still paying his monthly mortgage. My dad is old school and thinks he should be helping me with my rent. I disagree. I have paid on my own for years and don’t see why it’s necessary for him to help me out especially when he’s paying for his home already. I told my dad this is what most couples do, one usually stays at the other's place way more. It doesn’t mean they have to split the cost of rents. When we move in together then yes of course. Help me convince my dad this is how life is before you are living together and married. I am capable of paying my own bills.

Dear Ted and Amy,
One of my friends is getting married next month. She had asked me to help with a few details the day of the wedding. I was super happy to help, mainly before the reception starts with set up of favors, centerpieces, etc. But there is one issue. I had just started dating a guy when she asked me to help out at the wedding. We weren’t serious, so there wasn’t a plus one with my invite. Now we are serious and of course I want him to go to the wedding. I asked her about this and she said it wouldn’t work because they already have all the dinners planned along with seating. It seems like this would be an easy exception to make for someone that is helping out. I offered to have us not eat and she said no, that it would be super tacky. Now I’m feeling like I don’t even know if I want to go, I might just help out with stuff and then leave if I can’t have him there. Am I expecting too much or is she not appreciating my help?

I get it – we’re not solving the world’s problems with this letter. But my girlfriends and I were having a discussion the other day and now I feel like the skeeviest person on the planet. We got on the topic of wearing underwear to bed at night and I mentioned that I wear the same underwear that I wear all day to bed. I shower in the morning, and put on clean underwear. If I work out during the day, or during the summer months (we don’t have to go there) I change them. But if not, I wear the same ones all day and then put my pajamas on over them at night. So apparently this is disgusting? My friends say they either don’t wear underwear to bed - which seems very uncomfortable to me – or they put a fresh pair on to sleep. Am I the crazy one here?

Dear Ted and Amy,
My family lives in a great neighborhood. We love our home and all of our neighbors, except for one. Our next door neighbor is a single guy who is likely in his mid-50's. His mom used to live with him until she passed three years ago, Her son may be unemployed, because he is always home. Since she passed, his behavior has gotten even more peculiar. He often stands in his front yard, shirtless in his boxers and drinking from a beer bottle. He also just sits in his driveway during the summer in a lawn chair watching the neighborhood kids play. So, when I noticed that he has a security camera on the side of his house that is pointed at the window of our six-year-old daughter, I almost went over there and force-fed that thing to him. My husband doesn't want the confrontation, so he went over and talked to the neighbor. The neighbor said that the cameras are old and don't even work. I don't believe him. My husband wants me to just leave it alone and put some reflective film over our daughters window. I feel like not being vocal and letting this guy know we are on to him just puts our daughters safety in jeopardy. Am I overreacting, or is my husband not reacting enough?

I am a middle school teacher and I do it because I love my kids. Some think that is a very difficult age to work with but I think it’s the best. What I don’t love, parents, is that you don’t make them take a shower before they come into school. I get it that some kids have bad home situations and taking a shower daily is not an option. But that doesn’t explain the other kids who come into my classroom that I know have plenty of running hot water at home, and it’s pretty clear they don’t shower regularly or wear deodorant. No, it’s not just one. And as the weather gets warmer and the sweat starts flying, it’s going to go to a whole other level. Please, for the love of God parents, can you talk your kids into cleaning up and putting on clean clothes before they expose my nose to eight hours of really bad stink? Dear Ted and Amy,
I have always been overweight and it has shaped my entire life. People have said nasty things to me and about me without knowing my medical history. I exercise & eat about 1600 calories a day but am still about 60 pounds overweight. Its discouraging. I really do not want surgery so I turned to the weight loss drug Wegovy which was approved for obesity. My friends have been supportive to my face but I’m hearing now they are judging me behind my back. I’m heartbroken. It’s my journey but I feel so ashamed now. How should I handle their criticism?

Dear Ted and Amy,
I’ve been dating a guy seriously for about a month so he has started staying over a lot. He’s a really nice guy but I’ve noticed he doesn’t really have good hygiene. First off, I notice that he only brushes his teeth in the morning, not when he goes to bed. So his breath is pretty bad when we go to bed. I leave for work after him in the morning and I also notice that his toothbrush is not wet when I leave which also kind of grosses me out.But then something happened when I woke up the other morning and he’d already left for work. I noticed a brown streak on my sheets. I washed the sheets but it bothered me all day long. Does he not really take care of that area either? I haven’t brought any of this up because I don’t want to hurt his feelings. I know I would be mortified. But I think that if he doesn’t start taking better care of his overall hygiene, I may have to break up with him. Can I bring it up without ruining the relationship anyway?
