This week we use a meditation called open monitoring to increase creativity.

Did you know...?

  • Creativity can improve your social life and your work life, it improves mood and it’s fun!
  • The brain needs a chance to focus and a change to be open to new ideas and be creative.
  • The brain generates creative ideas through divergent and convergent thinking. Divergent thinking is when you take a concept and think in new ways. convergent thinking where there is one answer and getting to it requires focus.

One way to support creativity is open monitoring mediation where you start by focusing on your natural breath and then you open up to all experiences without preference and judgement.

Here is the basics of the practice :

  1. Sit with eyes closed and allow whatever surfaces in your mind surface.
  2. Practice non-judgement by just watching and taking inventory.

Open monitoring meditation reduces involvement in brain regions related to memory function. When you suppress memory, there are more possibilities of what could be.

Now that you know the why behind this style of meditation, give it a try!
