Can I tell you something between you and me? I've had to learn to persevere when I've struggled to understand some complex textbook readings. What are some of the challenges you face in class or at work? Imagine losing your hearing in your left ear and becoming blind in both eyes. How would you handle being a student, or professional? Would you give up and make excuses or would you choose to move forward no matter what challenges you face? Meet my inspiration, Jordan Puente, an outstanding, intelligent, and brilliant classmate whom I met during the Spring 2022 semester while we were both enrolled in Non-Verbal Communications 350 at California State University, Northridge. Jordan takes us back to the age of eight months when it all began for him, when he lost his hearing and vision. Since he was eight months old, his perseverance, resilience, and swagger, together with the support of his family and friends, have helped him draw closer to the finish line of a long list of achievements and a Bachelor’s degree. Jordan has been cancer-free for 26 years. At the age of eight months, he was diagnosed with leukemia and required a bone marrow transplant. After 24 years, he went to Mt Sac and conducted his own radio show for two years before COVID intervened and cut his time short. He transferred to CSUN and is now a Sports Editor for the Daily Sundial, where he is majoring in Communications Studies with a concentration in Journalism.
