There is a difference between expecting your partner to read your mind and you're expecting your partner to actually know what to do in a situation. It's not just about them having the knowledge before you started the relationship but more that you have been telling them the information explicitly from the beginning. We should not feel bad that we want our partner to remember what we tell them and critically think when to use that information to our benefit. Once again, there is a difference between mind, reading and learning.

In working with a number of couples that ultimately want to make one another happy, I have found a noticeable behavior that actually is quite negative, and something that erodes trust in the long run. This is a concept of not wanting to disappoint one's partner, and instead of telling the honest truth, they would rather tell a white lie to avoid disappointing them. In today's episode let's talk about the importance of actually facilitating disappointment instead of trying to sugarcoat things with a white lie.

In today's episode, I want to talk more about how to be aware that communication is not always as simple as saying, the exact same words. But more about understanding that each other can have a different meaning from the exact same words. Instead of being frustrated by this fact, let's try making this a little bit more lighthearted and create a game.

I think every couple can understand that past pain definitely can linger if not addressed. Let's talk about how to begin this process, so that arguments become more focused on what is happening right now and not so much about what has happened in all the time you have been together as a couple.

Today we're gonna talk about the importance of having a no way mindset when it comes to working on couples issues. Defining, the no way out mindset means to be ready to deal with the situation that you are in because you cannot leave. I want to give some examples of people I have seen in practice as well as throughout social media, but personify these issues of easily, leaving and giving up on the commitment that it takes to be in a relationship with another person.

Every relationship does this dance. This dance goes beyond sexuality, and really is about the flow of roles and teamwork. Because this topic is vast and very personalized, I am only going to be talking about the most general points that I think everyone should start to assess and hopefully personalize in their own relationships. You will need, a strong awareness in yourself and what truly feels comfortable, happy and natural for you. Please keep in mind that this is a topic laced in a lot of cultural stigma so if you feel uncomfortable by discussing femininity and masculinity, this may not be the episode for you. In today's society, I see a lot of moments where people are expecting a behavior or an experience to come from someone else before it comes from them selves. This is specifically challenging when it comes to couples therapy. If you don't have anything to give or any energy or any willingness to do the thing you're requesting from your partner it doesn't make a lot of sense than asking of them to do what you are unwilling to do also. Today we're going to talk about the phenomenon of hypocrisy, and how to work on being aware of it and remedying the issue.

Sadly not every couple is ready or truly interested in improving their relationship. Sometimes this means the couple is not ready to look at their own role in the issue or they are not willing to listen to their partner because the hurt they feel or have caused is too much for them to be willing to work through. Every therapist does couples therapy differently. But these are just some factors I have seen in my own practice that makes or breaks a couple ready for the work on couples therapy.

This episode is a very important one in the grand scheme of understand how to approach couples in conflict. I find that couples today sometimes struggle with the expectation of sameness. They may think that they get along so well with their partner so why is this one area a mess. Sometimes it really just comes down to understanding that men and women are conditioned, socialized, and genetically different. Not in a value sort of way but just in a one likes apples and the other like oranges, its not bad just different. This episode is to help you all prepare for future episodes that will go more in depth on understanding how gender really can affect our relationships.

In this episode we will be talking about ways we can learn how to better know the partner we have. I will be giving some examples of couples that I have worked with that have had this issue in different capacities and then leave you with some ideas on how you can practice curiosity with your partner and how you can spot those learning moments.

If you have a question you would like to ask feel free to stop by my website sunrisetherapies.org to write me an email. I will see if I can reply to your question in one of the episodes.
