Today we will read John 1:1-4 which says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been in created. Life was in Him and that life was the light of men.”
What is the Word of God? Many would say “the bible”. And they’re not wrong. But here the Word is very different. This greek word logos is clearly describing Jesus in a strange and wonderful way. He is God, He was with God, He did all the creating, He has life in Himself naturally and gives it to humanity. All of this - whatever it all is - is the Word. The logos.
When Jesus was being tempted by Satan He responded that “man does not live on bread alone but every word that comes from the mouth of God”. This greek word is rhema and it means at the very least, utterance, or communication.
So what is the Word of God? You can go ahead and read articles by those trying to precisely define each term if you’d like. But we might be better off being content with the mystery. The Word is the essence of God communicated to us in a way we would otherwise not know, and it is for our benefit to discover it - and even feed on it.
“God, Jesus, Word, I take You at Your word. I receive from You what You have communicated. I receive it as more than just concepts. I feed on it. I’m animated by it. How I need You! Thank You for communicating and giving Yourself.”
