In this episode of Climbing the Summit, Danny explores how our experience of suffering—what yogic philosophy calls dukkha—arises not from external events, but from the thoughts and stories we attach to them. Drawing from the ancient wisdom of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, he reminds us that physical postures are only one step on a much deeper path toward self-realization. Through practices like pratyahara (sensory withdrawal) and meditation, we learn to train our focus and let the mental “sediment” settle, revealing the clarity that’s always been beneath the surface.
This episode invites listeners to look beyond ego (ahankara) and discover their own definition of success—not through striving, but through stillness and awareness.

The show delves into profound concepts, such as the idea that "good, bad, right or wrong are after the fact", inviting listeners to notice the "beautiful experience that's happening" before judgment. Danny encourages listeners to embrace life's unpredictable "switchbacks," recognizing that the next step often reveals itself only when you arrive at it. A central theme is the importance of "slowing down and recognizing where we are in the moment" as the path to self-awareness. The podcast introduces the concept of "perfect thirst," taught by Danny's mentor Michael Neil, which highlights that "the water that you need is inside of you," encouraging listeners to look inward for what they need instead of externally."Climbing the Summit" also offers a unique view on the ego, suggesting that when "in the right space," our ego "is here to serve us," contrary to the common belief that it should be eliminated. It differentiates between fleeting "happiness," which is "after form" or tied to external conditions, and a more profound, more enduring "underlying joy" that exists before happiness. The podcast encourages finding this joy by "noticing" one's experiences and patterns. Ultimately, this podcast is not about providing direct advice, but about helping listeners realize "You're exactly where you need to be," and to find their way forward through self-awareness and grace, rather than self-recrimination.

She emphasizes the difficulty of breaking ingrained samskaras (imprints or habits) from childhood and the importance of creating new, healthier patterns, even when it feels uncomfortable. Mimi also recounts her struggle with prioritizing her children over her own well-being, ultimately realizing the necessity of self-care to be a more effective parent, much like monks who prioritize self-work before service. A breast reduction surgery led her to yoga, where she experienced a radical transformation: physically growing four inches, losing 80 pounds, and, more importantly, finding a profound sense of inner peace.

While the physical benefits drew her in, it was the mental clarity and emotional stability that kept her on the mat. Mimi shares how yoga became not just a practice but a way of life — a physical expression of her mental and spiritual journey.

She opens up about her time living at an ashram, her lineage to Swami Shivananda, and how a once-dreaded silent meditation retreat became a gateway to deep healing. From ego battles on the mat to finding grace in stillness, Mimi’s story is a moving reminder of what it means to listen, to learn, and to lead with an open heart.

Insight doesn’t have to be earned—it’s always available. Growth doesn’t have to be forced—it happens when we show up to life as we are.

This podcast is an invitation to explore how we already work: the quiet intelligence behind our best choices, the clarity that comes when we’re present, and the natural direction that reveals itself when we stop trying so hard to figure it all out.

You won’t find steps or strategies here.
Just reflections, stories, and conversations pointing you back to something simple and powerful—your own direct experience.

Don’t take my word for it.

Progress doesn’t always come from pushing harder. Sometimes, it’s as simple as realizing that everything you need is already within you.

In this episode, we’re pointing to something deeper—something quieter. The idea that learning from others isn’t about gaining something new, but about waking up something inside you that’s been there all along.

When you begin to see that your experience of reality is shaped by your thoughts—both the ones you’re having right now and the ones you’ve accumulated about what life should mean—you also start to see that the unfolding of life isn’t happening to you... it’s happening through you.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, or searching for a way around the challenges you face, maybe the invitation isn’t to try harder—but to ease up on the mental gas pedal. To settle down inside. To create space for clear thinking to guide you in the moment.

Progress isn’t about perfection. It’s about allowing yourself to mess up, to learn, to grow—and still arrive.
Even if where you land looks different than where you thought you were headed… sometimes those unexpected turns are the most meaningful parts of the journey.

So try it on for yourself.
This is another honest, fireside-style conversation here at basecamp.
And just remember: you are all that you need.
No one’s coming to save you—because that person has been here the whole time.

Whether you're an early bird or cherish those extra moments of sleep, the key is finding a routine that fits YOU! 💪🏼

Growth is a journey full of ups and downs, and it's not always linear. Sometimes we experience setbacks or obstacles, but it's important to see these challenges as opportunities for learning and growth.

Having a clear understanding of ourselves can be very helpful in navigating through life's twists and turns. When we know our strengths and weaknesses, values, and goals, we can make better decisions that align with our true selves. This can help us stay focused and motivated even in the face of difficulties.

Self-awareness can also help us to recognize when we need to ask for help or support from others. It's important to acknowledge that we can't do everything alone and that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

Overall, by embracing the twists and turns of life and developing a strong sense of self-awareness, we can navigate our journey with greater ease and confidence.

This podcast is for you if you have ever asked for something and received it years later.  Life is more accessible than we think, and when you see your successes lined up in front of you, we humans have two choices. We can be upset about it, or we can keep moving forward.  Why limit yourself to, what you think is possible when everything you currently have, you never thought was possible? In case you don't remember, Jason blew me away with his insights into parenting—the way he sees the world is just so unique and really opened my eyes to a new perspective.

This time around, we talked about love. That's right: Love is all there is, plain and simple. And if you think what he said about parenting had some truth in it, well… you'll fall in love with him when it comes to how he loves his wife.

This episode is a must-listen-to if you are in any relationship—whether it's with your partner or your children or even your friends!

Here's the thing: kids are amazing.

I know, I know. You're probably thinking, "What is he talking about?" But hear me out.

When your kid is screaming at the top of their lungs for you to bring them a drink of water, it's hard to feel like you've made it as a parent. Especially when you think about how much time you've spent out in the sun with them, teaching them how to swim, go for hikes, and take care of themselves (and each other).

But here's what I've learned: kids are smart. They have their own way of communicating that works for them—and it works even if we adults don't always understand it.

That's why today I'm going to tell you something that may surprise you: my kids don't want me to stay outside longer than they need me to.

You see, they know they can handle this heat better than I can, so they want me to come inside when they need me there. And if they get tired or hot or thirsty or hungry? They'll let us know! We just have to listen—and then we'll be able to take care of whatever needs taking care of!

I've been thinking a lot lately about the concept of "showing up."

Showing up, in parenting, seems like the only thing we can do. It's what we're called to do: show up for our children, no matter what. But it often gets clouded by our thoughts and judgments of the moment.

The moment we get out of our way—by noticing what comes up in these moments with our children—we start to show up for them and ourselves in entirely unexpected ways.

Parenting is a lot different than it was when we were kids. It's hard to describe just how much it's changed, but we can all agree that being a parent today is nothing like being a parent in the past.

We're not sure if that's good or bad, but we do know that it feels like parenting is more complicated than ever—and even though it may be exhausting and frustrating at times, there are still moments of joy and wonder that make it worth sticking with.

When Demi McConkie and I sat down to chat about raising kids, we talked about how important it is to slow down and listen to our children as much as possible. Demi helps leaders find their unique way of leading by helping them slow down and notice what's actually happening around them (and within themselves) so they can lead with confidence and authenticity. She also has two wonderful children who keep her on her toes!

The first thing we must know is parents; things will happen outside our control. That's ok, in the five keys to parenting. That means you are in the game.

The second step is to notice; both what comes up in you and what comes up within your child.

This one is a little harder than it sounds, but with practice it will come naturally. You'll be able to notice when your child is having a bad day, or when they're just ready for something new and exciting.

Give this one a listen to and notice if you start noticing more. Haha, see what I did there—noticing/ noticing.

Being a parent can be stressful and challenging at times. But the flip side of that same coin is that our children can be our most outstanding teachers. Life is a perspective game; if something feels off, take a moment to step away and come back fresh. We all know that, but dang it, I want to give you license not to know what's going to happen, and you to still show up as your best self more of the time.

We're going to talk about how parenting is like riding a roller coaster. Sometimes it's scary and exciting, but it can also keep your heart pounding for hours after you've left the ride.

We'll talk about how parenting teaches us what it means to be vulnerable and authentic in this crazy world we live in today where everyone wants instant gratification and no one wants to hear about your struggles or failures because they don't want their lives interrupted by someone else's problems.

And then we're going to talk about how parenting teaches us how much patience we have inside ourselves—how much compassion we have for others—and whether or not those things have always been there but are just coming out now because they've been pushed down deep inside us by years of fear-based thinking?

When we look at how things work, we have a better chance of optimizing their usefulness. Thinking you are broken is another way of discoursing yourself from climbing your mountain. Life is a journey, and the more we notice ourselves, the more we get to keep and take home for ourselves.

Think about it—when you go to the gym, there's always some kind of a weight-loss program that you can follow. Sure, it might help you achieve your goal of getting fit, but what if there was no program? What if you just went with your own strength and did what felt right?

It's the same thing with our lives. When we look at how things work, we have a better chance of optimizing their usefulness. Thinking you are broken is another way of discoursing yourself from climbing your mountain. Life is a journey, and the more we notice ourselves, the more we get to keep and take home for ourselves.

Hey! Did you know that the creative process is a journey?

It's true. And I think it's one of the most magical journeys you can go on. But it's not just a physical journey—it's also an emotional one, and a mental one. You have to be willing to explore all parts of yourself in order for it to be truly fulfilling.

I've been on this journey for a long time, and I'm always looking for new people to share it with. If you want to join me on my next hike, we can chat about anything from art history to music theory to modern dance. Or if you just want to talk about what your favorite movie is or what book you're reading right now—that works too! Just let me know when and where, and we'll connect!

Today we talk about freedom from both positive and negative thinking. This is another chance to explore how things work. We don't control our hearts, lungs, or our bowel, but we think we have all the control when it comes to our thinking.

Freedom of control is when we have space from thinking we must control.

We can be free from the negative thoughts that come up in our mind. The same goes for positive thoughts that sometimes come up as well. If a negative thought comes up, we can just let it go and not react to it by saying anything out loud or even in our head.

The same goes for positive thoughts that come up in our mind; sometimes those are good too! But sometimes they aren't really positive and just seem to be positive because we want them to be so bad! When this happens, just let them go too! You don’t need them anymore!

View Details

Do you enjoy the process?

I'm not sure about you, but for a long time, I had a hard time enjoying the process. It seemed like the process was just a bunch of obstacles and pain points that were in the way of me getting what I wanted. But now that I know that's just how it works, I have found it easier to enjoy being a human being.

The worst part about running from the process is that it never ends! Every day, there's something else new to learn or something else that needs fixing—and sometimes those things can be a little painful or frustrating. But once you realize that this is just how life works, it becomes easier to keep moving forward and get through whatever's standing in your way.

Did you know that success could be effortless?

It seems like a bold statement, but it's true. Here's how: We've all been taught that hard work is the key to success. But what if I told you that was wrong? What if I said that there's a way to get things done faster and better with less work?

One unit of energy does not always equal one unit of reward. The misunderstanding leads us to do more and get less and less in return—diminishing returns. But there is a flip side; @michaelneillcatalyst calls it effortless success.  Effortless success happens when we have fun and are all in on a project. It's when we're totally immersed in something we love doing so much, time just slips away from us without our noticing it at all.

If you have a story, or would like to share, here is a place you can message me.

So you're good at one thing. That's great!

But what if you could use that skill to show up in all of life?

Your zone of excellence is portable, and you can take it with you wherever you go. It doesn't matter if you're a writer, or an artist, or a musician—what if you could use the skillset that got you good at those things… to be a better parent? To have more fun? To make more money?

You don't have to limit yourself to what has already worked for you in the past—you can take your zone of excellence with you and apply it everywhere: In your relationships, at work, in your hobbies, and even in your free time.

I did not know that parenting could be so triggering. If you get stressed out and feel like no one is around, you are not alone.

My parenting style has changed as I have come alive to how easy it is for me to get in my own way.

If I had one piece of advice for parents, you are ok, your kids are ok, and you will be ok. If you don’t think you are ok, that is ok too.

You are not alone.

We are all here to come together, to unfold as humans. If you are a parent, this may help you rest easier at night.

I was in a low mood and found myself in a good mood at the same time. Years ago, this would have been something I thought was utterly impossible. Somehow getting out of my head allowed me, Danny, to show up in what seemed like an almost effortless way.

I am not some guru here to teach you all the latest and greatest technics. I stopped using tips and tricks and started showing up in more moments in my life as myself.

As I talk about family, life, and being human, you can discover more about yourself. You could just as easily have a podcast that I listen to that helped me get the feel-goods. If you leave this podcast feeling better than you came, please share it with someone.

My daughter did not eat for three days, and I refused to take her to the doctor. They have something called the seven-day virus rule. It's because such a hot spot for us; I ended up sharting a little while making this episode. But as you loving humans know, life does not have to look pretty, as long as we get the job done, well.

I hope you enjoy this super short episode.

I miss the days where I had more time to lock myself in a dark closet with a bunch of audio tapes and hours to record really, really long segments of my voice telling funny stories. But those days are gone, lost forever to this newer, faster world that relies on technology to quickly spew out knowledge into the hands of anyone who will listen. That new technology is here, but it has also come with a price. People want to know… "how do I go from where I am now directly to WHEREVER I WANT TO GO?!" This video explores that journey and how we can't really leave off one chapter and pick up another even if we want to.

Please like and share this with other parents and human beings.

This is a raw and rare chat between Dave Shine and me recorded in person in Houston, Texas. Dave has a lot of cool nuggets of wisdom that I needed to tap into. I'm honored to have had this chance to catch this on tape. We cover a ton of ground: we talk about parenting, love, and lifestyle. This one is for the Explorer Mindset Warriors out there- the ones that want to venture forth and make a difference in a family and our children's lives.

The key to getting better at almost anything is to allow yourself to get better. It's not just about your performance. It's about the way you experience getting better. Some people like the idea of being the first one, or being great the first time out of the gate. Others don't care, they just like the process.

But, if you don't allow yourself to reap all the rewards and benefits of success because you know that it's not always going to go smoothly, then it doesn't matter if you go up there or not.
