She has also completed Dr. David Treleaven’s Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness training, and was one of a select few chosen by Dr. Treleaven for mentorship in 2022.
Episode Summary:
In this episode of the Concussion Coach Podcast, Bethany Lewis welcomes Jessie Rain Smith, a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) teacher and founder of Mindful Concussion. Following her own car accident and brain injury in 2013, Jessie was advised to use mindfulness but discovered that while some practices were incredibly powerful, others were detrimental, leading to panic and dissociation.
Jessie shares her personal concussion journey and the realization that recovery can be a long, winding path. She and Bethany dive into a crucial discussion on the dual nature of mindfulness for the injured brain. They explore its profound benefits for attention, nervous system regulation, and emotional control, while also highlighting the potential perils of common practices like body scans and intense interoceptive awareness that can be overly cognitive or dysregulating.
Jessie explains her modified approach, which prioritizes "nurturing anchors of attention" and "concentration practices" to build safety and regulation before moving into more challenging work. This episode is an essential listen for anyone in the brain injury community—survivors and caregivers alike—looking to harness the healing power of mindfulness in a safe, effective, and trauma-informed way.

Here is the content of the facebook post she references at the end:
Last night I lost 1 of my 6 eternal best freinds. My baby brother treysen porter suffered an accident and reunited with our father in heaven Treysen was the greatest example of jesus christ to me. He always put people first. He always made sure everyone was okay and did everything in his power to make people happy. If someone was sad he would cheer then up. Right before my mission my mom Holly Long Porter asked me to take him on an "adventure". And if I'm being honest I did not really want to, I just wanted to relax. I am so grateful I humbly took him to get pizza, and we went out to antelope Island in my native, northern Utah. We had so much fun listening to music and talking, then we got out and watched the stars. On the way back we took pictures of my truck and he was so happy. I will never forget his simple bit beautiful smile. I am so grateful for this experience, and for the brother treysen porter was to me. This will forever be my last experience with my baby brother in this stage of God's plan. But luckily with the knowledge of God's perfect plan for us l, I know with a surity I will see my brother treysen again someday. The last 2 pictures are me holding his football number in front of the Mesa AZ temple. And I had so much peace knowing that we will be together again someday. And that families can truly be together forever. You guys please, please give your family a hug tonight. Tell them you love them. Life is to short to hold grudges. Life is to short to be taken for granted. Tomorrow is not guaranteed. Please tell everyone you around them that you love them you never know when it will be the last! Let us all "serve as trey would" and continue to treat people as he did. I love you all so much. And treysen thank you for being the best example to me, I look up to you forever. GOD BE WITH YOU UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN

She started a non-profit organization with the aim of fighting concussion-related isolation by creating and giving out physical boxes with comforting and useful items to concussion victims, and creating a digital library of stories from concussion victims, care-givers, and medical professionals to help people know they are not alone in their experience. Today I get to share one of my absolute favorite strategies for helping people manage their minds and emotions and post concussion symptoms: mindfulness! Mindfulness is incredibly beneficial for all humans, but can be particularly helpful for those dealing with post concussion syndrome because it improves some of the symptoms that people with concussions often deal with, namely emotional regulation, nervous system destimulation, and problems with attention/focus and memory. Listen in for more reasons to practice mindfulness, some of my favorite ways to practice, and some excellent resources to learn more about this incredibly effective strategy. Your brain will thank you! :)

Even after treatment, the road to recovery from a concussion can be long and windy, with ups and downs along the way. In this week's episode, my friend and fellow coach Kaylee Blair and I share and address some of the most common concerns we hear from our clients and their loved ones about their continued recovery. These are gems of wisdom we've gained directly from clients, other brain injury survivors, and from our own life experiences, observations, and coach training. We hope it will be helpful for anyone recovering from post concussion symptoms, or just going through a hard time.
Don't let the outro & intro confuse you... this week's podcast is not from my personal coaching program, but from the combined program that the fabulous Kaylee Blair and I put together to help people who completed the treatment at CognitiveFX. Our program, while originally geared towards helping people on the other side of CFX's EPIC treatment, will be beneficial for anyone who is struggling with post concussion symptoms and would like some help and guidance along the way. Noise sensitivity is one of the most common concerns of people suffering from post concussion syndrome. Sounds can feel overwhelming and prevent people from participating in activities they love, such as sporting events, concerts, youth camps, family gatherings, etc. Noise sensitivity can be devastating and significantly impact someone's functioning in their daily life. Join Nate Benson and me as we discuss the underlying causes of noise sensitivity, and ways that this problem can be addressed.
One significant way to address noise sensitivity is housed at CognitiveFX, a cutting-edge concussion clinic in Provo, UT. (www.cognitivefxusa.com) It is a machine called TOMAR (Tonotopic Map Regenerator) and was invented by Dr. Heath Lorzel, PhD, who was interviewed on this podcast in episode 35 (https://youtu.be/wTqpdlfJqV8). Dr. Lorzel also discovered that in addition to decreasing noise sensitivity for people dealing with post-concussion symptoms, this device could also be used to help people suffering from anosmia (loss of smell) from COVID-19. Nate shares some of the successes he's seen in working with people dealing with loss of smell by using TOMAR and smell training kits.
You can learn more about CognitiveFX at their website, www.cognitivefxusa.com, or follow them on instagram @cognitive_fx
If you have questions for Dr. Heath Lorzel, the inventor of TOMAR, he can be reached at HLorzel@gmail.com.

Join me as I interview Cory Hardman, a certified life coach who specializes in working with teens and young adults struggling with anxiety. Cory's husband experienced post concussion syndrome, and the changes in his personality and life due to the symptoms he experienced created some significant challenges in their relationship and family life. Cory's experience being the caregiver and support system for her husband as he's gone through this challenge is raw and inspiring, and very likely will resonate with anyone supporting a loved one through post concussion syndrome. I'm so grateful she was open to sharing her story, as I believe this perspective is so important and not addressed frequently enough. A concussion can impact the entire family, as evidenced in the Hardman's experience, and the caregivers need to be seen and recognized and receive support as well. Cory and I hope that through her sharing her experiences, someone else will not feel so alone in their caregiving.

So often, people suffering with Post Concussion Syndrome feel the added emotional burden of trying to manage other people's feelings surrounding their concussion. This is not only unnecessary, but it wastes valuable energy and emotional resources on something that is impossible to control. I will tell you the Secret To The Universe (ie: "The Model"), that explains how and why it's true that you're not responsible for others' reactions to your injury. (Credit for "The Model" goes to Brooke Castillo at The Life Coach School: www.thelifecoachschool.com) Enjoy!

Today’s interview is unique because in this one, I am the one being interviewed :) My friend Wendy Parrish has an amazing podcast called Messages From the Middle. It is focused on mental health and is called Messages from the Middle because she is still on her mental health journey and is using the podcasting platform to share her learnings, insights and experiences along the way. Even though she addresses fairly heavy topics such as depression, anxiety, and her experience with an in-patient treatment center, she is genuinely funny and has a beautiful way of expressing herself.
She invited me on to her podcast because she knows that concussions can impact mental health, since she and some of her children have experienced them. We had a great discussion about post concussion syndrome and how mental health can be impacted by a head injury.
Enjoy listening in on our discussion, and check out her podcast to listen to her other episodes. I have gained genuinely helpful insights into mental health through her openness and vulnerability on her podcast, and besides all that, her voice is so nice to listen to :) So be sure to check out Messages From the Middle, and enjoy this interview with Wendy Parrish! Join me as I interview Megan Brown, a wife and mother to young children who sustained a concussion after getting in a car accident. Her experience is one that I believe many people will relate to, since she really wasn't sure she actually had a concussion, or that it could be affecting her in the ways it was. She was experiencing memory issues, emotional changes, fatigue, decreased motivation to do things she loves, etc., and she couldn't believe it was all from the concussion when no one else in the car was injured at all.
She ended up working with me (www.theconcussioncoach.com) and going to CognitiveFX (www.cognitivefxusa.com) and finding hope and gaining significant progress in her healing journey.

Happy New Year! As we are wrapping up 2022 and looking to the future in 2023 and beyond, how intentionally are we thinking about the future? This short and sweet episode shares one of my favorite coaching strategies: since our brains tend to focus on the worst case scenario, we can give equal airtime in our minds to the best case scenario as well. Doing so will loosen up our fear of the future and open up possibilities that we may never otherwise consider. This strategy is just as valid in relation to relationships and regular life as it is in relation to those with concussions looking to their future. People dealing with post concussion syndrome sometimes feel like the future is hopeless and overwhelming due to the unpredictability of their symptoms, but this strategy is just as applicable to their situation. Let the potential possibility of goodness in the future share airtime in your mind. You've got this. Happy New Year!
In today's episode, I share an experience I've had recently that I was initially resistant to, and how I've moved through acceptance to embracing it. I also describe the pivot I'm making in my business to focus on concussion coaching (think: life coaching through the eyes of an occupational therapist). If you or someone you love has had a concussion and would like a 30 min consultation, I'd love to meet with you! Sign up on my website: www.theconcussioncoach.com

I also mention my membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whose website is www.churchofjesuschrist.org.
Join me as I interview Kaylie Ferguson about a cutting-edge concussion clinic, CognitiveFX. This clinic utilizes a superior and individualized approach to treat post-concussion symptoms (PCS). Using fNCI scans, they are able to determine specifically which areas of the brain have been affected by the brain injury, and use a multi-disciplinary approach with a variety of therapies and technologies to target those affected areas. They treat patients from all over the world, helping people gain their lives back after enduring a concussion, and the treatment can be effective even years following the initial injury. Patients with head injuries from bike accidents, motor vehicle accidents, falls, skiing, soccer, other sports injuries, domestic violence, etc., have had their symptoms decrease or disappear completely. Check out their website to review their research, gain access to their incredibly helpful information about Post-Concussion Syndrome, or sign up for a free consultation. www.cognitivefxusa.com
Common post-concussion symptoms may include brain fog, sleep issues, anxiety, depression, visual problems, reading difficulty, memory problems, light and noise sensitivity, dizziness, balance issues, headaches, fatigue, or difficulty with attention and concentration.
*This conversation contains content that may not be suitable for young children. Join me as I interview Amber, a survivor of domestic abuse, who shares some of her experiences with the physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuse she endured in her marriage, and the knowledge and understanding she has gained through the process. Her story offers an important perspective, whether you're in an abusive relationship yourself, or love someone who is in one, or just want to gain some more understanding around how and why people stay or go back to these types of relationships. Amber offers ideas and tips on how to help someone in an abusive relationship, and shares some important insights on forgiveness--what it is and what it is not.
Amber references a list of things that forgiveness is not. It is included below, and is from a talk called "Be 100 Percent Responsible" by Lynn G. Robbins. https://speeches.byu.edu/talks/lynn-g-robbins/be-100-percent-responsible/
Part of understanding forgiveness is to understand what it is not:
Forgiving her abusive husband does not excuse or condone his cruelty.
Forgiving does not mean forgetting his brutality; you cannot unremember or erase a memory that is so traumatic.
Forgiving does not mean that justice is being denied, because mercy cannot rob justice.
Forgiving does not erase the injury he has caused, but it can begin to heal the wounds and ease the pain.
Forgiving does not mean trusting him again and giving him yet another chance to abuse her and the children. While to forgive is a commandment, trust has to be earned and evidenced by good behavior over time, which he clearly has not demonstrated.
Forgiving does not mean forgiveness of his sins. Only the Lord can do that, based upon sincere repentance.
Join me as I interview Kent Jordan, a United States Circuit Judge for the Third Circuit, about how to interact with people with whom you disagree. He is extremely qualified to discuss this subject and shares important insights regarding engaging in civil discourse. So how do we get along with others in a contentious world? Spoiler alert: there is no secret sauce; but there ARE key fundamental principles and values that everyone can work towards incorporating into their lives that will make this world a much better place. Tune in to find out what they are.

Life coach Bethany Lewis explores two ways we tend to confuse where power lies: either we try to give ours away, or we think we can take others' power on ourselves. Neither benefits us, and in this video she discusses why and how we can get clear on where our power lies and own it. Check out her website: www.lifeinspiredcoach.com
