Did you know that gentle is strong? Jesus gave a lot of marriage tips in his teachings. In Matthew 5:5, he says Blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the earth. We confuse meek with weak. But a better understanding of the term is that it is someone who is gentle. And being gentle means you are strong. When you know you are strong, you can choose to be gentle and care effectively for your family and spouse. This recording explains how this verse is a hidden marriage tip from Jesus. You'll learn how to apply it and be blessed when you put it into practice. I think you will find this helpful and encouraging. Please comment and share and subscribe. Remember this when apologizing. We all make mistakes and need to apologize to someone. This happens a lot when you are married. You say or do something that offends your spouse and they let you know about it. To mend your relationship and keep from damaging your relationship, you need to apologize. There are four critical elements to a sincere apology and they all start with R: Responsibility, Regret, Repentance, and Request forgiveness.

This short recording is going to teach you how to share these four R's so that your marriage can heal and you can receive forgiveness.

Your marriage can be awesome but it's not now and perhaps you're discouraged and want to give up. Let me encourage you with some of the lyrics from the song at the end of Lego Movie 2 entitled "Everything's Not Awesome."

Everything's not awesome But that doesn't mean that it's hopeless and bleak

Everything's not awesome But in my heart, I believe (I believe)

We can make things better if we stick together (If we stick together)

Side by side, you and I, we will build it together.

Everything's not awesome Things can't be awesome all of the time

It's an unrealistic expectation But that doesn't mean we shouldn't try

To make everything awesome In a less idealistic kind of way

We should maybe aim for not bad 'Cause not bad, well that would be real great

Here's the link if you want to listen to this song: https://youtu.be/xlHSBx6F6ZQ

In this recording I'll explain why these words are so powerful and encouraging. I'll give you practical steps to take so that you can move your marriage from not awesome to not bad and beyond.

Are white lies destroying your marriage? One of the things I’ve observed that can be very damaging to a marriage is the habit some have of giving themselves permission to tell “white lies” to their spouse. Perhaps you have fallen into this trap. I’m not talking about being tactful, polite or choosing your words carefully to avoid hurting someone’s feelings, but about deliberately misleading or saying something is true that you know is not true. Because they are not about something important or critical, we justify these lies and say they are no big deal. But these seemingly harmless white lies can do significant harm to your marriage because they can injure the trust in your relationship. Let me remind you that trust is foundational to a healthy and strong marriage. You can’t really be close to someone you don’t trust. In addition to eroding trust, lying is damaging because one lie usually leads to another. If this is your marriage, this can stop and things can change.

This recording will give you five steps to turn around this destructive pattern and start rebuilding trust again.

What suggestions would you give someone who is struggling with lying?

Do you know how to grieve and how to help someone who is grieving? If you have lost a loved one, this will give you a roadmap on how to navigate through your grief. The emotions are overwhelming at times and most people I talk to do not know how to deal with them. So instead of processing the sadness and anger in a healthy way, most people either deny, avoid or self medicate. None of these will help you. This recording will teach you the healthy way to deal with those feelings.

The second half is about how to be there to love and support someone who is grieving. If your husband or wife has lost a parent, friend or sibling, he or she needs your help. But I've also seen that most of us don't know what to do when someone we love is grieving. So we try to fix it or try to help them avoid the pain. By listening to this, you'll learn the best way to help your loved ones get through their grief.

Even if you heard this when I first published it, I would encourage you to listen to it again, then share it with others. I would love to hear your comments too.

If you need someone to talk and pray with you, please book a free call with me at my website: www.turnitup.coach

Do you know how to create a healthy marriage? In this recording I want to teach you what I think is the best way to do that. It starts with realizing that your marriage is a living entity. Like all living things, it has needs. It needs to be cared for. It needs to be protected. It needs to be fed. It needs to be prioritized. When you care for your marriage it will grow and be healthy. If you neglect it, it will die.

Did you know that the emotions someone struggles with when they get a divorce are the same emotions that someone has when someone they love has died? That's because they are grieving the death of their marriage. In this recording you will learn seven ways to create and have a healthy marriage.

Does your husband or wife lie to you? Would you like your spouse to tell you the truth? This recording will help you confront him or her about their  lying and create an atmosphere of honesty in your marriage and relationship.  Trust is an essential ingredient in a healthy marriage. Without it, you'll be insecure and find it difficult if not impossible to be intimate emotionally or physically with your husband or wife.  In order for trust to thrive, you must be honest with each other. That means telling the truth no matter the consequences. If you want to be close and build a trusting relationship, lying, even innocent white lies must stop. The answer is to create an atmosphere of honesty. This recording will teach you how to do that.

Do you know how to avoid unnecessary conflict in your marriage? Couples often fight over things that are not important. Once the conflict begins, we don't want to lose or back down or let the other person win. So we fight and argue about things that don't matter. You can break this damaging habit with one simple question. Ask yourself, "Would I rather be right or would I rather be happy?"

This recording will help you learn how to let go of taking and defending a position and how to gracefully respond in a way that honors the suggestion of your spouse. You really can be happier in your marriage or relationship by putting this one tip into practice.

Has anyone ever said to you, "You just don't get it!"? You may have been listening but you failed to show that you understand what they are saying and what you think they might be feeling. In this short video, I explain there are three steps to showing someone you understand.

Here are the points I cover:

  1. Listen and empathize - Pay attention, focus and think about what the person is saying to you. As you do that, imagine how you would feel if that happened to you. Would you feel frustrated, angry, happy, sad?

  2. Repeat back to the person in your own words what you think they said and how they are feeling. This is why you have to pay attention. You need to verbalize what you heard and then what you think they are feeling. Don't worry about getting it absolutely correct, just do you best. Something is better than nothing.

  3. Ask - "Is that it?" or "Did I get it right?" You want the person speaking to expound or clarify what they are saying to you or you want them to let you know you got it. Either way, they will feel that you are trying to understand what they are trying to say to you. If they bring up something that isn't clear, it's also ok to ask questions, then repeat that back to them and ask again if that's it.

This continues until you hear the person say yes, you got it. Now you know the person feels understood. This will greatly improve the quality of your communication and the strength of your relationship. I hope you enjoyed this and found it helpful. I'd love to read your comments.

Every marriage needs this. What do you think your marriage needs? Does it need better communication, more affection, more time with each other? While all of these are good things, let me suggest that  every marriage needs a lifeguard!

Recently I signed up to do a triathlon which consisted of a 1100 yard swim in a lake, a 22 mile bike ride and a 6 mile run. On the day of the race, when I got in the water for the swim, something happened that changed my life. I learned a lesson that day that can be applied to your marriage.   This recording will help you have the lifelong marriage that you really want. Every marriage needs this and I hope you will be inspired and encouraged by it.

Do you feel like giving up on your marriage? Or if you know someone who feels like giving up and ending their marriage, please share this with them.

If you feel like giving up, I understand that things are bad in your marriage and you just can't see how they could possibly get better. Before you walk away and get a divorce, ask yourself two questions:

  1. What does God want me to do?

  2. What miracle does God want to do in my marriage?

What does god want you to do – He wants you to make your marriage work.

Here’s how:

  1. Get help! Some things are not DIY

  2. Focus on changing yourself, not your spouse.

  3. Learn how and change the things you can

  4. Accept the things you can’t change

  5. Act like you love them, even if you don’t feel like it

Instead of giving up, trust God to bless you as you honor your marriage vow. Believe that God will do a miracle in your marriage as you get the help you need. Please share this with someone you might know whose marriage is struggling and thinking that divorce is their only option.

If you or someone you know have any questions or want some help, call me at 626-804-1731. If I don't answer, I promise I'll call you back!

Why give grace to others? How would you like to be treated when you make a mistake? Would you like others to give grace to you? Would you like them to treat you with judgment and condemnation? Would you like them to speak to you harshly and ask "Why did you do that?" If you're like me you would like them to give you grace, right? What is grace? It is understanding, forgiveness and acceptance.

God gives us grace through Jesus and he calls us to give grace to others. Jesus taught us in Matthew 7:12 to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Our problem is that when others make mistakes we don't want to give them grace. Instead we want to teach them a lesson, hold them accountable and make sure they don't do that again. So instead of giving grace, we treat them exactly the way we don't want to be treated when we mess up. If you want others to give you grace, then give grace to them.

Let them off the hook, don't make a big deal about their mistakes, forgive and accept that person with all of their flaws. In other words, give them grace! You may be saying - "I give grace to my spouse all the time and he/she still hurts me and makes mistakes. What do I do about that?" The Bible also tells us to "speak the truth with love." and that Jesus came full of grace and truth. In my next video I'll teach on how to do that. For now, let's give grace to others.

Are your hobbies damaging your marriage? This recording will give you 5 steps to fix this. Hobbies like playing golf, going shopping, riding dirt bikes, are not bad but they can take over your life and become more important to you than your marriage.   There are many things that can damage a marriage - working too much, focusing too much on the kids even spending too much time serving at your church. Hobbies can be one of those things that start out good and can grow into something harmful if you're not careful.   Time is valuable and it is also limited. When you say yes to something, you automatically are saying no to something else.   How do you balance your life so you can enjoy your hobby and still have a great marriage? 1. Think about and prioritize what you really want 2. Talk about this with your spouse 3. Hold your hobby with an open hand, let go of it if you need to 4. Decide together how to fit your hobby into your life or if you need to stop doing it while you are in this season of life. 5. Find a hobby you and your spouse can enjoy together.  I hope you found this helpful. For more tips and resources, go to www.turnitup.coach. Here's a great marriage tip - Accept your spouse's influence. Do you ever feel that you and your spouse are on different pages? You see things differently, have different ideas about what to do to solve a problem, have different needs, desires and wants. HOW DO YOU GET ON THE SAME PAGE? One tip is to accept his or her influence.

God’s plan for your marriage is found in Genesis 2:24. It says that two will become one. This means his will is that you work together to solve the challenges in life. That your marriage is one of we not me.

Unfortunately, this is generally a problem for husbands. We don’t want to accept our spouse’s influence. Why?

  1. You think your way is better

  2. You think they don’t understand

  3. You think they don’t have the training or education or experience that you’ve had in this area so their opinion isn’t valid

  4. It feels like you are giving up your power and influence and leadership in your home

  5. You want to win

If you want a great marriage that is fulfilling and satisfying, be open to listening to and implementing the input from your spouse. You show honor and respect for your spouse by listening and accepting their ideas and advice. Acknowledge they had a good idea. Thank him or her for suggesting that. When you accept your spouse's influence, perhaps her or she will treat you differently!

Consider your perspective.  How you view things determines how you do things. Another way to say that is: Your perspective affects your performance.  If your spouse asks you to take out the trash or mow the lawn or go to the store for something, or help the kids with their homework, how do you view that request?  If you view the requests from your spouse as a chore, a task, or an interruption, if you do the task at all, you will do it reluctantly, half-heartedly, and without giving it your best.   But if you see his or her requests as an opportunity to show someone you love that you care about them and want to lighten their load, that changes the way you fulfill the request doesn't it?   It works the same way with a problem. Your problem is usually not your problem, how you see your problem is your problem.  In this recording you'll learn how to adjust the way you think about the requests and problems that come your way. As you change your perspective on them you will be much more successful in your personal and professional life, especially in your marriage.   If you liked this, please share.   You're invited to join my free Facebook group called Turn it Up! a group about relationships and marriage. The first step to improving your marriage is to admit you need help.

What do you want your marriage to be like? If you want to get on the same page as your spouse, communicate better, solve problems and stop arguing, then you probably need help.

We don't want to get help generally. We instead deny we need help or we think that our self effort will fix things. Sometimes we just fake it and pretend everything is ok even though we know it's not.

In this recording you will learn why it's important to admit you need help.

You will also learn that help can be both direct and indirect. Indirect help can come from books, videos and podcasts where you will learn new ideas and strategies. Direct help comes from a coach, therapist, pastor or mentor who will speak directly into your lives and help you apply what you have learned.

Here's Valentines day tip: demonstrate your love. Do you demonstrate your love for your spouse? Most of us feel love towards the person we are married to. But do you consistently demonstrate that love? How do you know if someone means what they say? It's when they follow up their words with their actions.

God did that for us. Romans 5:8 says that God demonstrated his own love for us in this, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. He didn't just say it, he demonstrated his love for us by his actions. We need to do the same for our spouses.

One of the problems I help couples solve in my marriage coaching is the wife not feeling loved or special. Her husband loves her but he doesn't know how to express that or demonstrate that. Because he doesn't know how, most of the time he doesn't do anything. And when he does do something, it usually fails.

How do you demonstrate your love? Here's a suggestion - spend a few moments thinking about what your spouse likes and then get him/her that. It's not rocket science! But we often wait until the last minute and then scramble to do something that will send the right message. My suggestion is to think about it beforehand, make a plan and then execute the plan.

Recently my wife and I went away for a few days to celebrate our anniversary. In addition to getting her a card and a gift, I also bought her flowers, bought a special scented candle and packed our bluetooth speaker so we could have some music. She loved these extra things and I could tell that my demonstration of love for her made her feel special.

For more suggestions, I wrote an entire chapter about this in my book, Turn it Up! - how to have the lifelong marriage you really want. You can get a copy at turnitup.coach/book. Also check out the free video course and other marriage resources at https://turnitup.coach/helpful-tools/

Do you know how to respond instead of react? This is one of the most common mistakes we all make in relationships, we react instead of respond. When your spouse is upset at you for something and tells you about it, chances are you feel he/she is attacking you and your react. When you react you get defensive, start explaining, excusing yourself and perhaps blaming someone else. When you choose to respond you stop and think for a moment and then respond with something that will be helpful. John Maxwell teaches that all of us carry two buckets with us, one with water and the other with gasoline. When  you react and get defensive, it's like pouring gas on a fire. But when you respond instead of react, you pour water on the fire. Following this suggestion will save you a lot of problems in your marriage.  This video will not only tell you what to do, it will equip you to do it. You will learn how to respond instead of react.  Let me know what you think by leaving a comment,  share and subscribe.   You are also invited to join my free Facebook group. Here's a relationship suggestion that will remove a common mistake couples make. Instead of asking for what you need or want in your marriage, you assume your spouse will provide that. When they don't, you get offended and say, "You should have..."  You just put a should all over your spouse. The answer is to turn your should statement into a wish. "I wish you wouldn't do that..." This then is clear and it is not an attack. You can then make a request. "Would you please...?" This tool will really help your marriage and all your relationships. Have you ever felt hopeless, helpless and powerless when facing a problem? I've felt that way. I found three powerful problem solving questions that helped me solve some problems and deal with the challenges of life more effectively.

Here are the three questions:

  1. What can you do?

  2. What would you like to do?

  3. What will you do?

In this teaching I'll explain how to use these three questions to seek God's help and come up with a plan that you can use to solve the problem you're facing.

Do you want to have a great marriage? One way to have that is to regularly ask yourself and then ask you spouse the "connection question." Hi, I'm Kelly, pastor, police chaplain and marriage coach with another tool that will help you have the lifelong marriage you really want. The connection question is basically, "how's our connection?"

Other ways you could ask that are:

  1. How are we doing as a couple?

  2. Is there anything you want to see different or changed in our relationship?

  3. What do you like about our marriage?

  4. Is there something you would like to see more of in our marriage?

  5. Is there something that you would like to see less of or stop that’s occurring in our marriage?

  6. What adjustments can we make to improve our marriage?

  7. Is there anything you would like to talk to me about?

  8. Are you satisfied with the quality of our connection?

  9. What ideas do you have about strengthening our marriage?

Asking the connection question places your marriage in reality and not fantasy. It's looking at how things are really going, not how do you hope or wish they were. Asking this question is not an act of fear or paranoia, rather a desire to look honestly at what is going on. Then when you see the reality of your marriage, you can take action: repair the damage, get help from a coach, reconnect, etc. Asking the connection question keeps you from being overconfident and assuming things are great when they might not be. I hope this helps.

Do you know how to help someone you love share their feelings? It could be your spouse, your kids or a friend. Everyone needs a safe place to process and share how they feel about things in life. This skill will help you become closer and be the supportive person your loved one needs. Emotions need motion and you can be a catalyst that helps someone get out what is in their heart instead of just stuffing it inside. It’s hard to share our feelings. Some of us just don’t know how. Perhaps we were raised in a home where it was not ok to have, let alone share your feelings, especially the negative ones. Many of us don’t know how we are feeling because we are not in touch with them. Others don’t have the vocabulary that adequately describes them.

Here’s how to help someone share their feelings:

  1. Ask an open ended question to start the conversation. A great one is “Tell me about your day.”

  2. Listen carefully and pay attention. Put away or turn off anything that might distract you so you can focus on what they are saying. Remember, you asked for this!

  3. Clarify by either asking follow up questions or repeating back in your own words what they just said to you.

  4. Ask the magic question – “How did that make you feel?” This will invite them to move beyond reporting on the events to the realm of their feelings.

  5. Suggest feeling words if they are struggling to describe their emotions to you. Be patient and let them try first, but if they don’t have the right word, you could suggest one. Try to imagine how you would feel if the same thing happened to you? Then suggest that to see if that’s what they are feeling.

  6. Thank them for sharing. This is a privilege you need to appreciate and show your gratitude.

  7. Model sharing your feelings for them. You can do this by saying, “Let me tell you about my day.” Then follow that up with “Here’s how that made me feel…” I hope you found this helpful.

If you’d like more help with this, I wrote an entire chapter on this subject in my book, Turn it Up! – how to have the lifelong marriage that you really want. You can get it at www.turnitup.coach/book.

Do you know what the simplest and best way to strengthen your marriage or relationship is? You may laugh when I give you the answer because it's common sense, but I talk to couples all the time who have let this slip from their lives and their marriage suffers because of it. Here’s the answer – spend time together. Just like the phone you have, you’ve got to charge it up for it to work. If you don’t, it will eventually weaken and then die. The same thing is true in a marriage. Even if you are busy and have kids to take care of, if you don’t spend time with each other alone, your relationship is going to run out of power and stop working.

Here’s four keys to spending time with each other:

  1. Prioritize - There are things you want to do and things you need to do. Spending time with each other is a need to do type of thing. Yes, there are obstacles that must be overcome to make this happen but when you realize how important it is, you will come up with creative ways to conquer the challenges that are keeping you from spending time together. Some couples feel guilty or selfish spending time with each other. If you want your marriage to be strong and to last. This is essential!

  2. Plan – The saying is true that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. Get your calendar out and decide when you are going to go on a date. Keep things fresh by adding variety to your plans. Guys like to do side by side activities like watching a game or playing golf. Women usually prefer face to face things like having dinner. Do both. If you can afford it, it’s also helpful to plan big things like going away for a night or two a few times a year along with your weekly date. The key is to consistently get these things on your calendar, then you won’t be swept along by the demands of a busy schedule. When you plan your time together, think too about what will make the event special for your spouse. Doing something he prefers or buying her roses adds a lot to the time you are spending together. Your goal is to make your spouse feel loved.

  3. Prepare – get a baby sitter, make the dinner reservation, and look up the location so you know how long it will take you to get there. All of these things make the date go smoothly. Think of what needs to happen before you leave the house and take care of those things.

  4. Proceed – get out of the house and have fun together, just the two of you. I hope this is helpful. If you liked it, please subscribe to my channel.
