The bird was spotted near the El Sherana Mine, an abandoned uranium mine. The mine was first discovered in 1954 and went into production in 1958. The first run ended in 1959. It picked back up in 1961 and closed forever in 1964. Richard Wells, a herpetologist, first spotted the bird in 1977. He described a large, nocturnal possibly crepuscular, flightless bird.
