s1e63 Abraham and the Binding of Isaac - Genesis 22

Observations:

Ty

  • Has God ever asked for a sacrifice besides this story? In which the end, God did not make Abraham sacrifice Issac.
  • Setting up the coming of Jesus
  • Was Issac not enough of a sacrifice?
  • We parallel this story with the sacrifice of Jesus. Was it simply that the sacrifice of Issac could not atone for the sin of the world?— God provided the sacrifice like Abraham said he would
  • Reminds me of Mark 9:14, where the man cries out help my unbelief. Where usually, healing requires faith, but in this instance, Jesus also provided faith. Just like in this story, the Lord provided the sacrifice.
  • Why is it not recorded what Issac said or did after being bound
  • Does God ever ask for a sacrifice?
  • Why did God test Abraham?

Darin

  • After these things? What things in particular?
  • Here I am - said 3x in this chapter
  • No talkback from Abraham? Why the silence?
  • Moriah - significance?
  • Abraham and his servants bring the wood, and Isaac carries it up the hill - God will provide the lamb.
  • Now I know - the Angel- is this God?
  • A ram provided - substitution - instead of his son - parallels?
  • God repeats the covenant always meant through Isaac
  • Was Abraham giving up the covenant too?
  • Abraham says, 'we will be back' - are these words of faith?

Meaning:

(Ty) “The Lord will provide”-- Moses or Genesis writer - Not your son but mine - God. (Darin) God is incredibly faithful. He is the Sovereign and Provider.

Application:

Inward: (Ty) Fear God. (Darin) Do I listen to the conventional wisdom of the age more than the Holy Spirit?

Outward: (Ty) Listen to God. (Darin) Do I seek to be gracious like God is gracious to me? How do I provide for others in my relationships?

Upward: (Ty) Praise God that when we fear Him, He builds wisdom in us; when we listen to Him, we get to be a part of His kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. (Darin) God is sovereign - no one has a right to question him. God is gracious - no one is his equal. Praise you, Lord, for your tests and provision!
