s1e69 Judah and Tamar Genesis 38

Observations:

  • Why is this story here? Seems to interrupt the Joseph story - significance?
  • Adullamite - turned away from his brothers to this guy - who was Hirah exactly? Significance? Idol worshipper?
  • Caananite wife - this was against God's law, correct?
  • Tamar - safe to assume that she is Caanaite too? If so, why did she care about the command to multiply - did she convert?
  • Onan - why have sex with her at all? Just flat-out selfish? Apparently evil dude
  • Judah's deception - send her home - Tamar wasn't the only one who deceived - he never intended to give her his other son, right?
  • Did Judah believe that Tamar was cursed? Did he not see the evil his sons were doing?
  • Enaim means two springs or eyes - ironic that Judah doesn't recognize her, and she disguises herself in a place called eyes
  • she knew where she sat, right? A wayside, a common place for prostitutes?
  • She knew he was a man not to be trusted - but didn't care about the goat, right? only used stuff to frame him
  • Twenty-two days 'cult prostitute,' so she disguised herself as a cult prostitute of a fake god? and Judah went to her anyway? Judah was messed up
  • and burned to death - was this normal? I thought stoning was the main execution
  • Judah acknowledges Tamar's righteousness. I have a hard time understanding how this is righteousness - maybe because she went to lengths to carry out the command of multiplying - but with deception and cult prostitution? confusing
  • Twins with the younger getting ahead again - Jacob and Esau (heel grabber) - significance w Jacob and now with Perez? Through Perez comes the Davidic Dynasty

Meaning: A stay in Egypt was God's grace to keep them from destruction by intermarriage and false gods. The story demonstrates God's grace and faithfulness to his promise, ultimately coming in Jesus.

Application:

Inward: Do I even think about building community? How much zeal do I have regarding seeing God's will play out among his people?

Outward: What do I practically do to encourage the community to bring about God's will?

Upward: You are so faithful, Father! Thank you for using us, even in our sins and schemes, to bring grace to a broken world.
