s1e37 Mark 10:32-45 3rd Prediction and The Request of James and John
Darin's observations:
- "Road" - same word as "journey" in vs. 17. Is Mark eluding to a "destiny" of sorts? i.e., the cross? Up to Jerusalem - significancea fantasticeographical? City on a hill?
- v32 is an amazing art to me - great picture of action, quick walk uphill, amazement, dermination on the trip to the cross is amazing. Those who followed were afraid...
- Judas is hearing this? I wonder if it phases him at this point. Maybe he will recall later? So plain - after 3 days, he will rise.
- The words delivered, condemn, deliver, mock, spit, flog, kill - a lot of action to happen in a very short time...didn't the Jews break like 12 of their own laws to rush him to the cross?
- Matthew 20 includes the mother of James and John; why not Mark?
- Did James and John grasp what "in your glory" meant? Earthly kingdom of Heavenly one? Are they saying they are ready for death or troubles before earthly glory?
- Cup? Baptism? Signs of trouble? Metaphors of tribulation?
- The 10 became indignant - why? The 12 talking about status again - why is this such a factor? Why the competition?
- Jesus' response - the Gentiles, Mark didn't want to use the word Romans here? Their "great ones"?
- Servant, slave - diakonos and doulos - why the servant to slave in v44?
- Ransom - lutron, specifically payment given as a ransom - are there theological, "atonement" connotations here? Or is it a response to doulos? Buying freedom?
Ty's observations:
- Jesus keeps retelling what is going to happen on the cross; why? Is Jesus saying this again because they just don't understand? Has Jesus revealed where it will happen? Is it because of the obvious importance of the event?
- For context, Luke 18:34 "But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden, and they did not grasp what was said."
- This answers my questions but then begs the question, why was this hidden from them?
- Why do the disciples want to be on the same level as God? Is this not the same sin as the original?
- Does slave to all apply to us, or is Jesus talking about Himself again?
- Is Jesus pointing out that the disciples have a worldly desire to be great and leave a legacy?
Meaning:
(Darin) Mark sums up the whole ministry purpose of Jesus in verse 45. Mark means for the disciples of Jesus to mimic what Jesus did, do not be lords but servants and sacrifice for the many.
(Ty) Jesus had the right to Lord His power and authority over us but didn't do that He came to serve. He will choose to be taken on the cross to be mocked and spit on him like a thief, to be flogged and killed like a murderer. He will do this as a ransom for us. Don't try to be equal with God; instead, take the lowly position of a servant, for that is what it takes to be great in God's eyes.
Application:
Walk: (Darin) Jesus doesn't shun these faulty requests of struggling men but challenges them in truth. (Ty) Being a servant to all is a stark contrast to a world that, to this day, is still telling us that our goal should be to be equal to God. We were made in God's image, not to be our own gods. We exist solely to glorify good God almighty, not indulge ourselves.
Model: (Darin) Be a servant. (Ty) He came to serve. Jesus took an unselfish servant's heart to everything He did every day with the leading of the Holy Spirit. What would the world look like if I did the same thing?
Praise: (Darin) Jesus endured the cross...we live because He gave up his life! (Ty) Praise Jesus that He came to serve and give himself as a ransom for us who daily deserve death, but through His grace and Him can receive salvation.
