s1 e33 Mark 9:30-41 Jesus' 2nd Prediction, Who is the Greatest? and Anyone Not Against Us is For Us

Darin's Observations:

• 2nd time Mark records Jesus' prediction - last time in chapter 8
• The trip through Galilee, coming back from Caeserea? The 2nd prediction seems chronologically close to the 1st one.
• Jesus did not want anyone to know what? The location? What he was saying to the disciples?
• He loves using the Son of Man designation; why?
• It seems so plain - delivered, killed, rise - they did not understand. Luke 9 entices it was kept from them - why?
• What was their fear based on? Did they think he might get angry? Think they are stupid? Afraid of what he might say?
• The argument between the disciples comes up again in Mark 10
• Jesus asks them what they were discussing - a setup? It seems so...because they kept silent and still addressed the issue.
• First-last, proud-humble, be served or serve - he connects the child to serving; why? Children are dependent on others to serve them, regarded as precious, not enemies, do not know what they are doing, are sons and daughters...
• Jesus questions the disciples' attitude and their perception of others.
• Cup of water - compared to Mt's context of inclusion w/kids.

Ty's Observations:

• Why don't the disciples confess right there?
• Luke says Jesu knew their thoughts which are implied in Mark.
• Is this not a lesson in humility?
• What does Jesus mean about welcoming and becoming like children in HIs answer to the disciples' debate of who is greatest?

Meaning:

(Darin) Jesus turns the world's values on its head. His disciples must emulate His sacrificial service, humility, and inclusiveness.

(Ty) One thing Mark could be emphasizing is how Jesus says, comes to me like a child; he means vulnerable. When we are afraid, scared, anxious, or in danger, we should come to Him. And not just when we are in trouble but even with the smallest of things. We should be so happy to be in the presence of Jesus that it becomes a priority in our lives and not an afterthought.

Application:

Walk: (Darin) I love Jesus' heart for inclusion - not wanting cliques or status seekers. (Ty) Jesus is always trying to get others to understand. I love how he is patient, seeking for the disciples to get it.

Model: (Darin) Jesus sat down and called the 12; we too must seek to "get on the level" of others and not expect them to just "understand". (Ty) We should have hearts like servants. I am not good at this at all, but it is interesting as a human. It is more rewarding to serve than to be served.

Praise: (Darin) Philippians 2 - the humble servant who became obedient even to death on a cross! Praise God! (Ty) He is the G.O.A.T. He is the gamechanger. He is the Uniter!
