s1e31 Mark 9:2-13 The Transfiguration
Observations:
- After six days? Why is Mark so specific? Is the timing important?
- Mt says six days, but Luke says eight days; why?
- What does transfigured mean in this context? Luke does not use the term "transfigured" - Luke says his face was altered, Mt says his face shone like the sun - mark only mentions his clothes; why?
- Elijah and Moses appear, and they are talking; how do the disciples recognize them? I wonder about the content of that conversation. (never answerable)
- Peter said to Jesus - all three gospels mention Peter as the spokesperson
- Does Mark seem to give Peter an excuse? (terrified) - he did not know what to say? Why did he feel he had to say anything?
- God speaks - reminiscent of the baptism of Jesus.
- What was the purpose of this event for only three guys?
- Why did he tell them to tell no one? Even the other disciples?
- Why were they wrestling with what rising of the dead might mean - hadn't Jesus been plain with them?
- Why were people comparing Jesus to Elijah, John the Baptist, and Jeremiah? They don't say that anyone is saying that he is the Messiah.
- How did John the Baptist "restore all things"?
Meaning:
- Mark uses the events at Caesarea Philippi and the transfiguration to strongly point the reader to who Jesus is and his mission. It is not what is expected by many.
Application:
- Walk - His secrecy shows restraint and love.
- Model - We must be willing o go through suffering if called.
- Praise - Jesus followed through on the humble and sacrificial plan of God.
