s4e28 Mark8:1-21 The Feeding of the 4,000 and the Pharisees are Leaven
Observations:
- compassion on the crowd - same event as the 5,000???
- 3 days - makes you think it is not the same event
- come from far away - how does the word spread like that?
- disciples question? after the 5,000? odd.
- 7 loaves they have - not the same as in John with the 5,000 and boy's lunch
- where is Dalmanutha? Significance?
- The Pharisees came? were they part of the 4,000? or at Dalmanutha?
- why a sign? was not this feeding a sign? what are they asking for exactly?
- no sign will be given - what? what just happened?
- they must mean something else by "sign"
- this seems disjointed chronologically
- forgotten to bring bread? where is their faith? short-term memory?
- hardening of hearts over the bread again, both feedings give the disciples issues
- Do you not yet understand? Why are they having such a hard time with this in particular?
- Jesus is obviously frustrated and for a good reason
Meaning:
- Jesus is the bread from heaven and is misunderstood even by his closest followers. Cynicism and hypocrisy drive people away from Jesus.
Application:
- Walk - He is able and willing to take care of us.
- Model - Jesus doesn't play up to people but is about the truth period.
- Praise - Jesus can heal the hard-hearted, and Jesus can heal the cynic.
Group Questions:
- What does having a hard heart mean?
- What common issues tend to harden the hearts of people in our culture toward Jesus?
- Have you ever asked for a sign from God? Explain.
- What experiences have you had with Jesus that have grown your faith?
