s4e24 Mark 6:30-44 The Feeding of the 5,000
Darin's Observations/Questions:
- Only miracle in the ministry of Jesus recorded in all 4 gospels
- v30 - the apostles return - no elaboration on what they said or what happened on their mission?
- "desolate" is used three times to describe their retreat...significance?
- doesn't sound like they managed a retreat - people got there ahead of them - rock star type fame
- v34 - great line - saw the great crowds, had compassion on them, they were like sheep without a shepherd - his response to his was to teach - Mark doesn't mention healings as the other gospels do
- because the crowd followed them to the desolate place - there wasn't anywhere for people to get food
- the disciples want Jesus to send them away - could have the disciples been longing for some peace and quiet?
- Jesus states - YOU give them something to eat - they respond with what sounds like sarcasm...as if they had it - this has to be tongue in cheek
- Mark doesn't mention the little boy - only John
- groups of 100s and 50s - any significance?
- broke the loaves and blessed - a foreshadowing of the upper room?
- 5,000 men - what about women and children? reason for this description?
Ty's Observations:
- significance of a “desert” place. Early it was a remote place where Jesus went to pray. Now after being sent on a mission it's where the apostles go with no one else around to rest.
- Jesus has compassion for crowds who do not know him. Luke says about the crowd “and was moved with compassion toward them because they were as sheep not having a shepherd.”
- How does this passage compare to the feeding of the 4 thousand?
- Jesus in comparison to sleep. How is finding rest in/with Jesus different from sleeping
- Two passages ago Jesus sent the disciples out 2 by 2 on a mission telling them to bring nothing extra for the journey. Essentially, saying that everything they need will be provided. Now we have this scene of provision for 5,000 hungry people. Was this a lesson for the apostles?
Meaning:
- (Darin) Messianic - He came to teach, heal, provide, make whole - to all! Marks also seems to be emphasizing God's heart for his sheep in the compassion of Jesus.
- (Ty) Bring all that you have to Jesus and watch what He does with it.
Application:
- Walk closer to Jesus: (Darin) I have experienced this same compassion from Jesus. (Ty) My application is to bring everything to Jesus and watch the great things He will do in my life. My particular focus is stewarding the relationships Jesus has put in front of me.
- Modeling Jesus: (Darin) He acts though tired and seeking retreat - to teach, feed, care. So should we work as tirelessly? (Ty) Jesus took the outcast, the hated, criminals, sinners and He shared the truth with them about the God He knows. The next time someone is set before me that I perceive as being below my social station.
- Praise Jesus: (Darin) Jn 6 - He is the Bread of Life - bread that never spoils! (Ty) When I was 20 I lost my best friend and my older brother to single-car drunk driving accidents. Jesus has filled that gap becoming my best friend and my older brother. My relationship with Jesus has become the most important relationship in my life and I praise Him for it.
