This is the sixth episode of this podcast series exploring London's 'other ethnic' identities, especially within the equality and diversity monitoring forms and the national statistics. Today, Sandy Abdelrahman and JC Candanedo talk to Chantal Olivia Miller about how to keep your identity in the diaspora and how does that affect your sense of belonging. Our guest is a filmmaker and broadcast journalist and social and creative entrepreneur who will be sharing with us her insight and lived experience. She is also the founder of Island Girls Rock - a non-profit initiative celebrating women of Caribbean heritage in the UK.
The 'Other' Checkbox is a project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and it is a collaboration between Sandy Abdelrahman and JC Candanedo. The idea of the project was born from our continuous conversation and debates on identity and not feeling represented or belonging. It is a project that is rooted in our own lived experience as immigrants and members of the 'Other' ethnic groups ourselves. Our aim is to create a sense of community and belonging for individuals from the 'Other' communities and a space to share our voices.
The other checkbox is broken down into four parts that interlink with each other starting with a survey, Podcast, Creative workshop and finally the impact report. You can learn more about the project on our website theothercheckbox.co.uk.
The Hosts: Sandy is a migrant woman of colour, activist, creative social entrepreneur and a co-founder of Skaped, a charity that inspires young people to engage with their human rights through the creative arts. JC is a Queer and Migrant Visual Artist who uses photography to explore Human Rights, Mental Health and Identity.
