This is the third episode of this podcast series exploring London's 'other ethnic' identities, especially within the equality and diversity monitoring forms and the national statistics. Today, Sandy Abdelrahman and JC Candanedo speak to Lisa Stepanovic and Moses Adeyemi about the intersection of Class and Ethnic Identity in the UK, and how does that affect your sense of identity and your feeling of belonging.
Lisa Stepanovic is a working-class award-winning entrepreneur and the founder of Social Ark, an East-London charity that helps young people use their own lived experiences to start their own projects. Moses Adeyemi is an award-winning entrepreneur who founded the specialist wellbeing programme Silverline Project. He's currently working on a new venture, Flick First Ltd, launched in 2020 and bringing a fresh perspective to the world of eCommerce.
The 'Other' Checkbox is a project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and it is a collaboration between Sandy Abdelrahman and JC Candanedo. The idea of the project was born from our continuous conversation and debates on identity and not feeling represented or belonging. It is a project that is rooted in our own lived experience as immigrants and members of the 'Other' ethnic groups ourselves.
Our aim is to create a sense of community and belonging for individuals from the 'Other' communities and a space to share our voices. The other checkbox is broken down into four parts that interlink with each other starting with a survey, Podcast, Creative workshop and finally the impact report. JC is a Queer and Migrant Visual Artist who uses photography to explore Human Rights, Mental Health and Identity.
