Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Most successful EA elevator pitches?, published by Ines on January 19, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Has anyone done any surveys, focus groups, etc on the most effective way to pitch EA in a couple of sentences? I would roughly define "most effective" as whichever most frequently sparks curiosity or enthusiasm in the recipient while maintaining accuracy. I often run into the problem of EA coming up in casual conversation and not knowing exactly how to explain what it is, and I know many others run into this problem as well. A large study on this could be very valuable as this little spiel is among the key make-or-break factors in someone wanting to know more about EA (and possibly go on to become involved) or not, and some pitches may be orders of magnitude better than others (of course, the optimal one for any given person or group will vary, but in general). Seems like a no-brainer that at the very least organizers and community builders should be optimizing this. Thanks for listening.
