Have you heard of the 10,000-hour rule?

According to Malcolm Gladwell, it takes 10,000 hours of deliberate training to reach true expertise.

But not everything is as focused as mastering a sport or musical instrument.

Indeed, I would say that for most people who succeed in life, the 10,000-hour rule is bunk.

What we need is to be better than average.

Not at one thing, but several.

Scott Adams calls this ‘skill-stacking.’

It’s the idea that your set of skills are worth more than the sum of their parts.

Adams says he was never the funniest in the room, that his artistic skills were mediocre, and that his jokes were mere observations from years working in corporate environments.

And, yet, his Dilbert comics are some of the most successful of all time.

It’s not about being great at one thing, it’s about combining the things you are already good at in a unique way.

I’ve had something of a zig-zag career, ranging from academia to finance, DJing to journalism, student mentoring to fiction writing.

And the skills I’ve gained help me every day.

What does your talent-stack look like?

How have you combined your unique talents?
