I see this question bandied around a lot on social media and it strikes me as odd.
You never see people asking would you watch a video not produced by a Holywood studio?
Would you listen to a band not signed to a major label?
Would you listen to a podcast not made by an established radio station, or read a blog post not published by a news organisation?
How about enjoying photos taken by amateurs?
Or food cooked in independent cafes and restaurants?
Or art not displayed in galleries?
I’ve heard the arguments: there are so many bad books out there.
I agree, but you could say the same about all the content on any platform.
You don’t hear people decrying YouTube because the vast majority of videos aren’t to their taste, or abandoning Spotify because it’s filled with so much bad music.
No. Consumers find what they like and give independent creators a fair shake.
We’re in a world where the gatekeepers are no longer relevant and yet the stigma against independent authors still lingers.
It’s time to stop falling for corporate publishing’s PR spin, and embrace independent creators, whatever their chosen medium.
Who knows? You might discover something amazing.
