Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact different people in different ways. Working in counseling I’ve learned that there are a lot more things that can rock our world that I never knew existed. Many of those things are hidden struggles that others may never know about — or at least they don’t know about until something comes along and quite literally “opens up a can” of past trauma or hidden struggles. So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of exploration and understanding through this podcast which offers short episodes and hopefully informational and motivational material to help you as you prepare for the last day of the week. Not every episode will be about a mental health struggle but there will certainly be weeks that are. Sometimes we will just hope to give you a boost as you close out the week. However, there are some rules of engagement here though - some understanding that I want you to have before you agree to go on the journey.
Welcome in to the Friday Refresh brought to you by Reframing Hope - the rocking awesome book by Travis and Whitney Creasy found at BenandTravis.com.
Life is a wild ride sometimes. But if we stop to think of all the things in life to be thankful for we might actually find that life has been better to us than what we often give it credit for. So stop this week and just say thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to listen to me ramble on occasion.

A recent road trip to a rural cemetery for a graveside funeral had me passing through many small towns. All through these towns on on the outskirts were buildings, houses, and barns that caught my eye. It wasn’t for the grandeur of them. Not at all actually. What caught my eye was that a great many of them had become so dilapidated that they were beyond repair.
Regardless of where you go — whether small towns or large cities — you will see buildings like this.
Many years ago I went to Scotland on a mission trip and had the opportunity to see several castles. Most of them would have dated back to times before my country of citizenship even existed. Yet Some could nearly be lived in. I’m sure many are. But many were in ruins.
What makes one place seemingly stand the test of time and other structures look like they will fall at any minute?
Interest and energy.

My six year old son had come to me with a serious question that was rolling around in that growing little brain. “Can only mommies and daddies see the wrinkles?” You see, I had just gotten through making him stand still while I sprayed wrinkle release onto his newly donned shirt and pants as he was getting ready for school. I had always assumed he knew what wrinkles were. I mean, I know what wrinkles are. My wife knows what they are and I think most of my kids do. But it had never been explained to him. Over the next few minutes he had questions: “are they little black specks that I can’t see?” “Are they like germs?” You see all this time I assumed that my son knew exactly what we were talking about as we would make them submit to our orders to stand still as we sprayed — or as we collected their clothes and put them on the bed sprayed this liquid fairy dust. We were trying to get rid of creases. All the while my son thought we were ridding the world of germ like attackers of our clothing, I suppose. I have no idea how long he had wondered about the threatening wrinkles. I have no idea if he had been concerned about them before or if it just hit him all of a sudden. But something occurred to me in that moment: He trusted me and his mother on more than one occasion to rid his clothes and/or his body of some invisible attackers that he couldn’t see that we apparently could.

I recently saw a meme of two ladies walking in white headed for the pearly gates of heaven. One said, “I was the queen of A country” while the other stated “I’m the queen OF Country.” Of course you probably recognize that as a reference to the passing of the Queen Elizabeth the second of England on September 8 and the passing of Loretta Lynn on October 4. Both carried the title of queen and while their life had very little impact on me directly it was very different for others.

Kudzu. I’m fairly sure you have heard of it. If you live in the United States or Japan I’m almost certain you’ve seen it. If you live in the South it’s just a part of your culture. The group Alabama starts one of their songs with the lyrics “it’ll creep up on you like a kudzu vine….”
An Iuka Mississsippi based classic country radio station is called Kudzu 104.9.
And the nickname for one of the most invasive plants in the world is affectionately called “the Vine that ate the South.”
Most people in the south consider kudzu an annoyance and wonder what people were thinking when they introduced it to help control erosion. We traded erosion for a plant that would conceal an entire army on a small hillside.
Most people don’t introduce negative things into their lives for the negativity. They introduce them into their lives because they have some benefit—most of the time it’s simply disguised as a benefit but not a true one. Consider the consequences before you take actions that you know might have a price you don’t want to pay.
Be careful….it’ll creep up on you like a kudzu vine.

As he stood at home plate and addressed the those in attendance and those watching at home he said: “Fans, for the past two weeks you have been reading about the bad break I got. Yet today I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of this earth…” A few minutes later as he concluded his speech he said “I may have had a tough break, but I have an awful lot to live for.” The statement is something that has gripped my attention on more than one occasion. Here is a man who has been at the top of the athletic world. Out of the millions of kids that play baseball, he made the majors and played 17 seasons. Out of all the players in Major League Baseball, he was voted to the All Star game 7 times. And as if that wasn’t good enough, out of all the players in the major leagues including all those chosen for to play in the All Star game, he had been the MVP not once, but twice. We all face battles. Whether it’s health, relational, occupational or otherwise. They aren’t easy and they aren’t fun. But one sure fire way to ward off the negative aspect of the battle is to focus on the blessing. And if you are willing to look - you will always find there is a blessing connected to the battle.

I recently got an invite to a party. That invitation was followed up with a request for no presents for the person whom they were honoring. They simply wanted our presence. You have probably felt that same sentiment from time to time. One of my favorite pastimes is bow fishing. I don’t own a boat and I don’t really ever plan to. When people ask me why, the answer is simple: I enjoy bow fishing the most because of the presence of my closest friends. Going by myself would not be nearly as enjoyable – not by a long shot (no pun intended). The presence and fellowship of people that I love and respect is what makes the experience so much greater.
As a therapist I have often felt frustrated that I don’t have the right words or correct therapeutic intervention. I have placed a lot of pressure on myself attempting to do things in just the right way. While I won’t say that technique and words are unimportant – we certainly know that words can be healing or they can be devastating to people – I think we often miss the point when we focus too much on those things. What is it that all of us need the most? Presence. We need people to be connected to us.

Welcome to Friday Refresh brought to you by Liberte Ministries at www.TravislovesHaiti.com They never worry. They never get tired. They never feel burdened. They have the an unwavering faith. They don’t mess up. If they touch it, it always turns to gold.
Do you know these they’s?
Does thinking about them keep you awake at night because you can’t figure out how they do it. How do they manage it all so perfectly?
Who are they?
After working in the church for 23 years and working in mental health for over 15 years I can say with confidence that “they” don’t exist. They never have. Sure they may do somethings near perfectly at times - but not everything.
When you compare yourself to the theys of the world you find yourself feeling less. Sometimes maybe worth-less.
You feel less because you compare yourself to a utopian family or individual that doesn’t exist.
They don’t exist.
But He does.
And He is the only one that ever did anything perfectly. And really He even struggled. But through His- Jesus’ —struggles you can find relief.

The Friday ReFresh brought to you by www.TravisLovesHaiti.com! It’s hard for me to imagine that there have been billions of people on the planet since the dawn of time and supposedly no too have ever been exactly the same. Even when folks have twins and doppelgängers there are still slight differences in some feature that has made them unique.
I was thinking about this because recently I got a European mount of a deer I harvested last year back and I was noticing how the antlers on all the deer I’ve harvested are different. I assume if no two people — or even finger prints are the same - no two antlers are the same either.
Unique. The word itself is unique. It comes from the Latin word Unicus meaning - “only, single, sole, alone in its kind.”
How beautiful is that. How amazing that you are unique - a masterpiece labeled 1 of 1. No one has been, is, or ever will be exactly like you.
Your talents will make an impact on someone like no one else could.
Your personality will help someone who is struggling in a way that only your personality could do.
No one can tell you that you don’t matter because no one knows everything you know.
No one can see everything that you see.
Your experience is unique. One of a kind.
Just the way God designed it. Your experience was meant to make a difference in the world.

I read a quote recently from Carey Lohrenz that said, “Most people don’t want to be part of the process, they just want to be part of the outcome. But the process is where you figure out who’s worth being a part of the outcome.”
Years ago I started helping the wise Christian sage Lonnie Jones, do ropes courses and experiential groups in Huntsville, Alabama. Eventually I was able to start some of my own groups that I call TEAM, which stands for Teaching, Experiencing, Applying, and Motivating.
In those groups we like to do various challenges with our participants and then follow that up with some debriefing. The hope is that the experience and following discussion of the fun and challenging event will help them find application to their every day circumstances — whether family, work, or athletic team.
One of those debriefs includes the question: “Which is more important, the product or the process?”

This Sunday some people will celebrating their father who is in the prime of his life. Some dads will be celebrating their first ever Father’s Day.
Others people will be thinking of their Father that is no longer with them. Still more will struggle because their relationship wasn’t great with their dad.
I have no idea where you are in this and it’s impossible to say something that will help you all. But let me simply say this… and you can apply it to whatever relationship you find it appropriate.
Don’t take any moment for granted.
So if you are a dad - Happy Father’s Day and soak it up. They grow up and it happens faster than I could believe.
If you have your dad still around do your best to show that you appreciate him for the time and energy he put into you… or at the very least thank him for giving you life.
If you no longer have your dad - then take a moment and reflect on the things he taught you - in his action, his words, or his mistakes that you have learned from and adjusted your life to do better than he did.
Just don’t take any moment for granted. With your dads, your moms, your grandparents, or your kids. Soak it up. These moments don’t last forever.
So do all you can to make today, tomorrow, Sunday, and every moment beyond that day the absolute best it can be.

I would like for you to hit the pause button on whatever you are doing right now as you read this and ask yourself a couple of questions. First, what is the most important thing in your life right now? And follow it up by asking what you are doing for that most important thing?
Even more humbling is the thought of what God will say about the way I spent my time and talents. Knowing that I will stand before Him after I take my last breath makes me wonder what I might be thinking as I take those last few breaths. Will I be looking back over my life and wish I had spent more time watching television? Will I be thinking about how I should have posted on Facebook or Instagram a little more? Maybe I’ll wonder why I didn’t spend more time in my personal hobbies.
The reality is that I know none of those things will be my regrets. Lonnie Jones has often asked us to consider “what we want now verses what we want most.” I let the “now” win way more times than I really should. On the day God calls me home I’m confident that the things that will matter are the things that don’t belong to this earth. I’ll be thinking about how I spent my life for God. I’ll be thinking about my family. I’ll be thinking about the people whom I love most. So, if that is what I’ll be thinking of then, that’s what I want most. And if that is what I want most then maybe I should focus on it now.

For most of us, Celebrities live their lives high on a pedestal. A perfect pedestal untouched by the concerns and difficulties of the normal person. However, the older I get the more I realize that this could not be farther from the truth. Some of my “heroes” of the silver screen and music industry have shown to have had personal battles that I may never know. Robin Williams and Chris Farley were comedy gold — but their death revealed that there was deep darkness that they struggled to overcome. Recently, the death of Naomi Judd—another celebrity that had impressed me with her abilities and her focus on family in song and personal life — has once again opened the discussion of depression. While there are certainly many factors to depression and anxiety, trauma is certainly a major contributor to many mental health concerns. So much so that there has been a significant amount of attention given towards Adverse Childhood Experiences and how these early negative events and trauma in the lives of children have resulted in major struggles later in life. So here is the point today: don’t let the traumas you have faced—whether early in life or late—fester into larger problems. Address those traumatic events with friends, ministers, counselors, or doctors. Don’t let those unresolved traumas eat away at your mental health. There are people who would absolutely love to help you. We love you… and there is an incredible God that made you in His image that loves you.

The last couple of weeks we have been talking about the Village and how we derive many benefits from relationships - Physical, Emotional, and Spiritual. Some of you, however, have had bad experiences with your village. Whether school, church, or family - it happens sometimes that we end up in a village that has been more hurtful than helpful. While I cannot claim to have had YOUR experience or completely understand what you have been through I do know that it is unfair and actually unreasonable to assume your experience is the ONLY experience and that just because its happened ONCE or even a couple of times that it means it will happen EVERY time (in fact that is both All or Nothing Thinking and Overgeneralizing - see the book Feeling Good by David Burns for a full list of Cognitive Distortions we use that often lead to depression and other distorted thinking). So, how do you identify unhealthiness in relationships (whether others or yours).
I certainly cannot tell you what you can or should do in that situation only that it is unhealthy and if it can’t be changed or improved on then make steps toward removing yourself if there are other options.

Last week we talked about the Need for a Village. Relationships benefit us in our physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Many times the village is just something that exists without effort - or maybe it used to be. Travis and I also enjoyed a large extended family. The other constant village has been the church. Of course schools also become that village with teachers and administrators that have a hand in our kids lives. All these are important and vital to the growth and health of our kids and us as adults. I’m thankful that we have the capability to connect online - even though it is not quite the same, maybe it will get us through this bump in the road. I think most of us have learned that we truly miss the way it used to be. I’m praying it will be that way again. Whatever the case, the Village Needs You. Do your part to encourage your village. Have you ever heard the phrase “It takes a village”? Whether you are looking back to the beginning of the Bible or scowering the interwebs for the social needs of humans you will find that everything you read points to the fact that we are social beings. It seems that everything from neuroscience to biology to psychology to religion points to the fact that we NEED each other. That is what has made 2020, 2021, and the beginning of 2022 so difficult for so many people. So this week’s challenge? Look for ways to connect with people in healthy ways. We need one another. Maybe now more than ever.
