Greetings!

We hope that you are off to a great start. The WOL Institute has been happy to have met and welcomed 780 students from 36 districts in 8 Modern and World Languages from Elementary to Level 5 and AP. We have also re-welcomed and met our Extended Campus Students from 11 IU8 districts - to date, 39 returning learners and 31 new learners have joined us and are taking 97 different classes!

It is so much fun to see that we have 131 different courses expanding students' options with our 39 talented Virtual Learning Facilitators (9 Full-time and 30 part-time). We are glad you are ALL with us. One other fun fact is that we have had over 3655 communications with students, families, and districts in the past 14 school days.

This Episode

Personalized learning is a concept that resonates differently with educators, parents, learners, and communities alike. Our discussion with Dr. Butler and Lauren McMinn reflected on how our understanding of personalized learning has evolved. We now view it not just as a tool for individual growth, but as a means to connect students with the broader community. Our aim is for students to engage deeply with their learning while also becoming active, contributing members of the communities they will ultimately help shape.

Here are three key topics in our discussion:

• Balance Personalized and Community-Centered Learning: Personalized Learning is essential to address the needs of students, yet, it must be integrated with the community as a focus, too. Community can be the classroom of learners and the life experiences they bring, or a place-based work experience, to name two. Dr. Butler and Lauren both stressed that the primary goal of education is to actively participate in society. Education is for both personal improvement as well as building a community of learning. By fostering a learning environment that values community involvement, educators can help their students become more well-rounded individuals who can contribute their gifts and talents in a positive way to their communities.

How can we find a way to nurture the gifts that our students bring to our community?

• Innovation in Virtual Learning: We all talked about the speed of change in the digital/virtual/online world. The evolving practices in the virtual space help meet students' diverse needs if they are well-curated and the teachers feel confident using the tools. We have found that innovation helps to keep the learning engaging, relevant, and adaptable to students' needs. Lauren highlighted how the World of Learning Institute has moved from merely delivering content to creating immersive, story-driven courses that capture students' interests and inspire curiosity, making virtual learning more effective and enjoyable.

What stories do you want to tell?

• The Role of Educators Shaping Education: Educators are the key to moving beyond traditional metrics like test scores. And, we recognize that if tests are used appropriately they offer a baseline in which to raise the floor and the ceiling for learning. Creating environments that nurture both individual growth and the community provides opportunities to see and acknowledge multiple measures of student talents and their ability to contribute to the larger whole.

Consider how your school defines and measures success. Who truly benefits from these assessments, and who is being left out or overlooked in the process?

Our discussion calls for a shift in focus towards more holistic educational goals, where students are prepared academically and equipped with the social and emotional skills necessary for thriving in a broader societal context.

Ultimately we advocate for a balanced, innovative, and interconnected approach to education that prepares students to succeed individually and within their communities.
