Living as citizens in our city and as citizens of the Kingdom of God will bring about inevitable collisions of allegiances. In Daniel 3, a hubristic king demands idolatry from the people of God, and the people of God in turn display a calm, beautiful resistance, knowing that the consequences might be ultimate. Our present post Christian-21st century culture makes similar demands, asking servants of King Jesus to bow down to cultural idols that Jesus doesn’t stand for. On top of that, we all have idols of our own hearts to deal with. Thankfully, though his ways and timing cannot be predicted, King Jesus will see his people through if we trust him to. That’s what he did then, what the Cross was all about, and what he continues to do now.
