ACT leader David Seymour is calling for eligibility for euthanasia to be broadened -  removing the requirement that a patient has only six months to live.

However the Royal College of GPs issuing a strong warning for caution. 

They say there needs to be a greater focus on palliative care, and that the lack of a strategic plan and adequate funding is a cause for concern.

An example, they say, is that the Ministry of Health has a dedicated team dealing with assisted suicide and euthanasia but not one focused solely on palliative care.
