On the other side of the world, a tiny island north of Norway has plunged into ‘winter night’ - three months of icy darkness.

Svalbard is home to the closest community to the North Pole, the home of Santa Claus, with just 2500 residents braving the cold.

But it’s unique for another reason too this year - it's inhabitants are mostly split between Russians and Ukrainians, with the two groups forging an unspoken and at times uneasy truce.
