A mobile alert pinged Aucklanders’ phones on Sunday night, warning them more heavy rain was on the way just 48 hours after the devastating floods.

Four people are dead and more than 5,000 homes have reported damage after three-quarters of the average summer rain fell in the supercity in just 15 hours.

Thunderstorms have since moved to other parts of the North Island with watches and warnings also in place in Northland and Coromandel.

On Monday morning, Tova O'Brien asked Roger Ball, director of emergency management at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) why a state of emergency wasn't declared at 6pm on Friday, the time it was already being considered.
