He took over the top job from a Prime Minister whose leadership was defined by crises... and now, Chris Hipkins' first week on the job is having to deal with a natural disaster.

The Prime Minister admitted with Tova O'Brien on Monday morning that communication about the Auckland floods could have been better.

"Communication was clearly something that left a bit to be desired in that first 24-hour period," said Hipkins.
