An activist accused of spreading anti-transgender sentiment is intent on entering New Zealand, as Immigration reviews her application to visit.

British woman Kellie-Jay Keen, also known as Posie Parker, was due to travel to New Zealand to speak in Auckland and Wellington for her Let Women Speak tour this weekend.

But that’s now up in the air, after her events in Australia saw some attendees give Nazi salutes and rising tensions between those there to support and oppose Posie's position.

The request to ban the activist from entering NZ is being met with mixed expressions. Some say her presence is an invitation to incite further extreme political action as we saw in Melbourne and potential violence.

On the other hand, even those who oppose Keen's political views say free speech means everyone, including those you don't agree with, should be able to have a voice.

Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere is opposing Keen's visit, and told Tova O'Brien on Tuesday morning that shutting her out of the country is not the same as "shutting down the debate".

"I think the debate can continue on. It's not like we're completely isolated and people can't share their views unless they're physically here," said Kerekere.

"But the fact is it has real-life consequences. When someone who incites violence and they come into a place and whip up that kind of hate, that has a direct and physical, mental impact on the trans and non-binary people in this country.

"We've already started passing laws to protect the rights of trans and non-binary people and this is a huge step backwards for them."

Kerekere said the activist is coming to New Zealand specifically to "create that kind of hate and violence," and the Government should be stepping in to stop them from legally entering the country.
