The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has delayed the execution of 52 year old Melissa Lucio amid growing doubts about whether she fatally beat her toddler.
Lucio was set for lethal injection on April 27 for the murder of her 2 year old daughter in 2007, but new evidence presented by her legal team has suggested the child may have accidentally fallen to her death.
Under police interrogation, Lucio repeatedly denied harming her daughter, raising the suggestion her confession was coerced.
Joining us to discuss the defence of ‘coercion’ is the co director for the Centre of Wrongful Convictions at the Northwestern School of Law, Laura Nirider.
