More than 600 earthquakes have been located by GeoNet since the start of an earthquake swarm in Kawerau in the early hours of Saturday, March 18.
Of these, eight earthquakes were recorded with a magnitude over 4.0.
While many of the earthquakes were felt in the area, others were only noticeable to GeoNet's seismic monitoring equipment.
The largest earthquake recorded so far has been M4.8, while the majority of earthquakes have been between M2.0 and M2.9.
These seismic events have left many locals concerned about the possibility of more severe earthquakes to come.
John Ristau GNS Seismologist addressed these concerns during an interview with Lloyd Burr on Monday afternoon.
