Creating genetically modified humans is no longer for science fiction movies and comics. It is for the now. Genome editing using CRISPR is revolutionizing our lives in ways that we never imagined before. From insulin to designer babies, this field has opened up a lot of questions regarding its possibilities and challenges. Will gene therapy exacerbate racial or other prejudices? Might it lead to a society of DNA haves and have-nots? Sunburns can lead to skin cancer, so why not see this as some sort of vaccine? What if somebody is obese due to an underlying medical condition? Can they take advantage of this technology? In the first episode of Hype Lab, we bring forth a discussion regarding genome modification technology, a technology that has been changing human lives as we know them today. Just like the controversies around IVF in its early years to the technology helping with the birth of more than 4 million babies today, we hope genome modification will also find more acceptance in the future and that it will be purely beneficial to the human race.
