The Roman emperor Augustus often chided his military commanders to “hasten slowly,” as he thought rashness was a dangerous quality for an officer.

A similar phrase, "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" echoed in my ears throughout my LE career as I practiced tactics and weapons manipulation. The phrase originates from the SEAL teams and translates roughly to “it’s quicker to do it right the first time.”

Consider, gentlemen, as you look to the New Year, where you might slow down and do fewer things better. Consider where you might go slow to get smooth so that you can go fast.
