Growing up, I witnessed my parents struggle financially. They worked hard to provide for our family, but in reality, they lived paycheck to paycheck. They just couldn’t get ahead. I vowed to find a better way, and spent my life learning and then teaching others how to build a solid foundation to weather the financial storms of life.
My philosophy is simple. I’m not here to tell you not to enjoy a nice evening out with friends, a week on the beach with your family or that you have to skip the insanely long line at Starbucks, but rather to help you understand how each of those decisions impact your financial situation not only today, but define your financial future.
I will be joined by other professionals who will provide their expert advice such as how to buy a home, proper estate planning, paying off debt and how to travel on a budget.
In this episode of Beyond the Paycheck, Paula Christine dives deep into the pros and cons of leasing vs. buying a car. Joined by her producer, Kevin, they address common listener questions and share their personal experiences. From budget considerations to the flexibility of modifications and the reliability of having a new vehicle every few years, Paula and Kevin discuss factors influencing the decision-making process when acquiring a car. Marc Edelstein from Ross Mortgage is back with us. We are discussing mortgages for those considering divorce and navigating the high-interest rate environment. As a CDLP Certified Divorce Lending Professional, Marc sheds light on the complexities of mortgage financing during divorce proceedings, addressing the common question of how to assume an existing mortgage with a low-interest rate while removing the former spouse from financial liability.
Marc distinguishes between two types of assumptions in the context of mortgage financing: simplified assumptions and qualified assumptions. In a simplified assumption, one spouse takes responsibility for making the payments without removing the other spouse from the mortgage. The financial obligation of the original borrower remains. In a qualified assumption, the person awarded the home assumes the terms and releases the other spouse from financial liability. Marc also highlights the types of assumable loans, such as government-insured loans like FHA, VA, and rural development loans, as well as most adjustable-rate mortgages.
Paula raises a scenario where a couple is divorcing in a high-interest rate environment, and one spouse wishes to stay in the home but also wants to remove the other spouse's name from the mortgage. Marc explains how this can be done, or you can wait until interest rates become more favorable or certain life events occur, like children graduating from school. This arrangement doesn't affect the departing spouse's ability to find new housing.
The conversation touches on the importance of considering the equity buyout in a divorce settlement. If one spouse has to buy out the other's equity portion, they need to be careful about the assets they use for this purpose. Cash and traditional IRAs are not equivalent. Marc emphasizes the need for clear communication and agreements in these matters.
The discussion also delves into managing mortgage communication when one spouse is not on the mortgage. The law grants the person awarded the home "successor's interest," giving them the same rights as the spouse on the mortgage, including access to mortgage information, grace periods, and protection against due-on-sale clauses.
It's always important to consult professionals, such as financial advisors, CDFA professionals, and CPAs, to make informed decisions during divorce proceedings. Marc's contact information is shared for those seeking mortgage-related advice.

In this episode of "Beyond the Paycheck," Paula Christine dives deep into the topic of passive income with her guest, Joey Muré from Wealth Without Wall Street. Joey shares his journey, starting in the mortgage business and making a significant income but realizing that increased income didn't equate to freedom. He mentions the importance of understanding the difference between active and passive income and the impact it can have on spending time with family.
Paula and Joey talk about the significance of setting clear financial goals, emphasizing that everyone's financial goals are unique based on their current expenses. We touch upon the idea that financial freedom is achieved when passive income exceeds monthly expenses. Paula relates this concept to her own experiences as a business owner and the balance between work and family life.
Joey explains the GPS model, which stands for Goal, Plan, and Support, as the key to achieving financial freedom. He highlights that having a clear vision of what life will look like when financial freedom is achieved is crucial. Understanding the importance of a well-thought-out plan and the role of a like-minded community in providing support is key.
Paula underscores the importance of having a structured process to develop passive income, and Joey mentions an upcoming book that will provide more detailed guidance on this subject. In this episode of Beyond the Paycheck, Paula and Jon are joined by Bob Bernotas, a franchise expert with over 30 years of experience in the field. Bob shared his journey into franchising, starting with his first venture into West Coast Video back in 1986. He recently acquired a men's health franchise called Gameday Men's Health.
We go into the process of purchasing a franchise, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right franchise that aligns with your goals and values. Bob highlighted that franchising has evolved, and it's not necessarily difficult to enter a franchise if you find the right fit.
Bob discussed the qualities that make a good franchisee, focusing on people skills, basic business acumen, determination, and financial capacity. He stressed that passion alone may not lead to success in franchise ownership, and it's crucial to choose a franchise that matches your skill set and goals.
We also explore the trend of semi-passive franchise concepts, which allow individuals to start their businesses part-time while maintaining other commitments. This trend has made franchising more accessible to a wider range of people.
In conclusion, Bob shares that the key to successful franchising is finding the right fit, ensuring that both the franchise and the franchisee are a good match. He encouraged anyone interested in franchising to reach out and explore the possibilities.

Fred begins by explaining his background as a computer engineer and how he realized the inherent risks of relying solely on a job for income. He highlights the importance of creating assets that generate income and cash flow independently of traditional employment or the stock market. This insight sets the stage for a discussion on alternative investments.
One of the primary alternative investments discussed is owning rental real estate. Fred emphasizes the potential for monthly income exceeding expenses when structured correctly. Paula raises an essential question about how someone living paycheck to paycheck can afford to purchase rental property. Fred offers practical advice, including strategies like renting out a room in one's own home and starting with small, consistent investments.
The conversation touches upon the concept of dedicating a portion of one's income to investments, drawing inspiration from Robert Kiyosaki's teachings in "Rich Dad, Poor Dad." Fred recommends opening a Roth IRA, automating contributions, and leveraging technology to establish a strong foundation for future investments.
Paula raises an important point regarding the use of retirement funds for income-generating investments. Fred introduces the concept of Self-directed Retirement Accounts, which allows individuals to invest retirement money in real estate, private equity, or other income-generating assets.
The podcast delves deeper into mortgage notes as an alternative investment, explaining how individual investors can participate in the secondary market by purchasing these notes. The risks associated with alternative investments are also discussed, emphasizing the importance of securing investments and seeking professional guidance when necessary.
In the final segment, Fred and Paula stress the significance of education and building a network of like-minded individuals to avoid making investment mistakes. They conclude by providing contact information for Fred, encouraging listeners to reach out for expert advice.

Jasper Smith, also known as Mr. #Build Wealth, rejoins Paula and Jon today. Together, they delve into the realm of intelligent money management and share valuable insights on effective budgeting, financial communication, and alternatives to traditional budgets.
Jasper highlights the key hurdle: finding a budgeting strategy that truly resonates with one's unique lifestyle and preferences. He emphasizes the need to choose a method that aligns with individual needs rather than blindly adopting popular approaches.
Jasper explains the "highlighter challenge," a practical exercise designed to illuminate spending habits. This activity involves reviewing the past three months of financial statements and highlighting non-essential expenses. By doing so, individuals gain a clearer understanding of their spending patterns and can differentiate between necessary expenditures and discretionary wants.
The conversation then shifts to the 50/20 rule, a strategy that Jasper endorses. He explains that this approach involves allocating 50% of one's income to essentials, 20% to financial goals, and 30% to lifestyle expenses. Jasper emphasizes that adopting a simplified and personalized budgeting approach can lead to greater financial freedom and enjoyment.
We discuss the importance of open and transparent financial communication within couples. Jasper suggests having honest conversations about financial strategies and goals in a relaxed setting, which fosters understanding and cooperation. The episode also touches on the significance of both partners being informed about their financial situation to avoid potential complications in the future.
Paula and Jasper conclude the episode by emphasizing the critical role of addressing financial challenges head-on and seeking expert guidance when needed.

Today, Paula Christine welcomes Mark Booher, a former soldier with a background in intelligence who is now a licensed attorney. Mark's unique journey takes us from his early enlistment in the Army at the age of 19, driven by a passion for the military, to his transition into law school following injuries and disillusionment with the practice of law. Despite his varied roles, Mark's unwavering love for the military remained a constant throughout his career.
The heart of the discussion centers around the concept of a "warrior mindset," a topic that has always fascinated Paula. Mark sheds light on this mindset, emphasizing that it encompasses more than just physical strength. It involves a holistic approach to life, characterized by discipline, courage, and self-mastery, all tied to a higher purpose and sense of duty. Drawing from historical examples, Mark highlights how ancient warriors balanced physical prowess with spiritual growth and self-discovery, resonating with the idea that true warriors conquer their internal struggles before external ones.
Paula raises a pertinent question: How can someone without military experience cultivate a warrior mindset? Mark's response revolves around adopting the right framework, and embracing struggle, sacrifice, and discomfort as essential ingredients for growth. Drawing parallels with the hero's journey, Mark explains how facing challenges, seeking knowledge, and overcoming obstacles are integral to developing this mindset. Both hosts discuss the significance of personal growth in alignment with community betterment, and Mark stresses the importance of striking a balance between individual achievement and communal contribution.

In this episode of Beyond the Paycheck, we are joined Jasper Smith, also known as Mr. Build Wealth, to talk about the complexities of managing financial goals for both parents and children. Our discussion centers on the challenge of saving for our children's college education while also balancing our personal financial aspirations. Jasper emphasizes the importance of considering whether our child truly needs to go to college, highlighting that higher education isn't the only path to success. He encourages us to have candid conversations with our children about their aspirations and to question whether college aligns with their goals. Our dialogue then transitions to exploring various financial tools, such as education-specific accounts and regular investment and savings accounts, that we can utilize to save for our child's future. Jasper emphasizes the significance of early discussions to determine the most suitable solution, with a nod to the SECURE 2.0 act and its implications for saving. Our conversation touches on the option of using funds for alternate purposes if our child chooses not to attend college, illustrating this through anecdotes and suggesting that flexibility and communication are key.
We also delve into the balancing act of financial priorities between education savings and our personal goals, such as retirement and home ownership. We stress the importance of prioritization and decision-making, while considering our individual situations and timeframes. The skyrocketing costs of higher education and the shifting landscape towards trade schools and community colleges are explored as factors affecting the college-versus-trade education decision. The pandemic and its impact on perceptions of formalized education are also discussed. Our discussion continues with reflections on career choices, potential income, and the value of education in various fields, recognizing the need for a solid financial foundation regardless of the chosen path.
Jasper firmly believes in a "village" for financial planning and education. We discuss strategies for harnessing support from family and friends, encouraging them to contribute to financial goals rather than gifting material possessions. Our conversation touches on the delicate balance between providing for our children and instilling a sense of financial responsibility, acknowledging that different households may have distinct approaches.

Jeff Kikel of Freedom Nation rejoins us today to expand on his idea of "a bazillion ways to make money." Last week we talked about rental incomes and side hustles, and we dig a little deeper today.
One way is to find something you're passionate about and put up an online course on how to do it on a site like Udemy. For example, Jeff is really into Chat GPT, so he has a course on it online.
Jeff also talks about Private Label Rights, or PLRs - the ability to start with someone else's course, add your knowledge, and repurpose it.
You can create a YouTube channel dedicated to one of your passions - whether it's the Civil War or email marketing - Jeff cites an example of a stay-at-home Mom overseas who created income doing the latter.
Imposter syndrome is real, and there are several reasons why people don't think they can start a side hustle or create passive income. Jeff dispels many of those myths for us.

The idea of saving a large nest egg for retirement is psychologically ineffective and outdated. Instead, you should be thinking about cash flow. What is your "Freedom Day?" It's the day you wake up and can go to work, but don't have to. The author of Freedom Day, Jeff Kikel, joins Paula and Jon today.
Jeff's background is as a traditional financial planner, and he experimented with the "Freedom Day" concept himself before employing it for others. The first step is figuring out your "MRI"- Minimum Required Income. Once you can make 125% of that number from various revenue streams, work becomes optional. For example, if you need $3,000 per month, and you're up to $3,750, you're "free."
This income can come from a combination of investment returns and withdrawals, rental income, side hustles, creating an online course, or even social security if you're old enough
As you work toward your Freedom Day, Jeff works with you on a bucket list. Figure out what's on your bucket list, and realistically, what each item is going to cost.
Not everyone can change their retirement mindset to one of Freedom Day. And Jeff does work with traditional retirement planning as well. But for those who can embrace this concept, it can be life-changing.

True Wealth Is Time, Not Money.
Erik Nero of First-Step Wealth is Paula and Jon's guest today, and he thinks people have many misconceptions about money. It's not about the quantity of money you have; it's about what that money allows you to do. What are you passionate about? In fact, some of this reminds Paula of online dating!
Sometimes mindsets around money can be chased back to childhood. Erik tells a story of his dad making him earn 25 cents to buy a squirt gun. It's a valuable lesson, as opposed to thinking money just appears.
Paula and Erik also spend some time discussing the importance of saving while you're young. Recent law changes have made that easier, but the younger you can start, the better. This is especially true because life often gets more complicated when you get older.
Erik often asks his clients, "What are your values and thoughts about the importance of money and how are those behaviors going to be matched to your overall purpose and outcome?"
Paula and Erik also muse over how hard it is to give advice as a parent; often, your kids will listen to the same exact advice, as long as it's coming from someone else!

Paula welcomes Patti Handy back today to talk about a topic both are very passionate about - women and money. Statistically, women struggle with money. There's the gender gap (women earn 83 cents for every dollar men do), and women are often having to care for kids and/or aging parents. More often than not, husbands are in charge of money and investments. All these factors led to Patti's transition from a financial advisor to a financial coach.
While younger women are taking a more active role in managing their money (again, on average) - women approaching retirement age are concerned about running out of money or being a burden to their kids.
People tend to be afraid to ask for help, but it's important to remember that it's not your fault if you haven't been taught something.
It's important to set goals and understand your "why" when it comes to money and savings. Patti also, discusses how important it is to have all of your documents organized in a way that your family knows where everything is located. Download the free resource “Personal Record Book” to get started organizing your estate.
Most importantly, Patti says, is to take care of yourself - mentally and physically.

In this first two-part series, Patti Handy, Financial Coach, covers how to start investing.
The first thing is to have a "roadmap" of where you are. Are you decades from retiring, or winding down your working years? That will affect where you should invest your money. And investing isn't a one-time, "set it and forget it" proposition. Your investments should be reviewed at least annually and will change as your priorities do.
Do not turn to Google or the web for advice on investing your money. Just like in the medical field, there's a lot of bad information out there. Start with a human being who understands you, and can explain what you don't yet grasp. A product or strategy you don't understand may not be a bad investment, but it's not right for you until you can get your head around it. Don't be afraid to ask questions; too often people smile and nod because their ego gets in the way.
The key to understanding investing is starting with your mindset. There are a number of books on this topic - but how did your childhood influence your opinions on money? Are there limiting beliefs we can work to change? Again, know where your starting point is.
Finally, Paula asks Patti what she wishes she could tell her 20-year self. Her answer: compound interest. We wrap up with an explanation and stark example of how powerful compounding can be.

We've been doing this podcast for a little over a year, and today Paula Christine puts Producer Jon in the hot seat. We've talked a lot about managing your money over our first 56 episodes. But what has Jon taken away? How has he saved money?
Jon talks about his top 5 takeaways, including:
But Jon's not going to let Paula off the hook. He asks her how SHE is saving. She mentions gym memberships and streaming services. Who knew we'd spend part of this episode talking about yoga and Ted Lasso?

Today, Paula Christine welcomes Sasha Rogers, a woman who left her career, bet on herself, and now helps others with their mindset.
We start with Paula's son, who is working very hard at a job he's not happy at. But he's well compensated and not ready to jump. Sasha feels he's got a certain savings number in his head. That's a common sticking point.
We spend some time talking about what we learned from our parents and what we teach our kids about money. It's very easy to be risk averse and not want to see bad things happen to your children, but you often have to give them the leeway to make mistakes and learn from them.
How do you take a giant step forward? The same way some people eliminate debt - the snowball method. Start with little, small successes, and stack these wins to build momentum.
Sasha left her stable career during the pandemic, with a new baby. But she's come out on the other side, and says the best thing she learned about money is that you have to invest money in yourself to make money.

In this episode of "Beyond the Paycheck," Paula Christine delves into the topic of feeling stuck in life and how to overcome it with mindset training and nutrition coach, David Messano. David shares his personal experience growing up in a cultish family as one of eighteen kids and how he had to change his beliefs to achieve financial freedom. He emphasizes the importance of having the right mindset to achieve success and how it can make all the difference in one's life.
Paula and David discuss the scarcity mindset, which is the belief that there is not enough to go around, and how it can hold people back from achieving their goals. They share how they overcame this mindset by reading books and listening to motivational speakers who helped them shift their perspective. They also talk about the quantum field, which is the idea that everything is connected and that our thoughts and beliefs can influence our reality.
David explains how he uses the quantum field to manifest the life he wants and how anyone can do the same by changing their thoughts and beliefs. He emphasizes that changing your mindset is possible, but it takes effort and consistency. Paula and David both agree that it's crucial to surround yourself with positive people who have the energy and mindset you want to emulate.
Overall, this podcast episode provides valuable insights into the power of mindset and how it can impact one's life. It encourages listeners to take control of their thoughts and beliefs and to surround themselves with positivity to achieve their goals.

Tricia Bailey is back this week to talk about the changes in the SECURE 2.0 Act passed by Congress, and how they will affect you, including incenitivizing retirement savings.
Business owners can get tax credits for institutiing retirement plans for their employees. Not only will this allow them to save money, but they can offer a benefit to be more attractive to potential employees.
Also, when it comes to enrolling in a retirement plan, employees will have to opt out of the plan instead of opting in. This can reduce the overwhelm when HR drops a giant benefits package on your desk. In fact, studies show that 88% of employees auto-enrolled stay enrolled!
Too many Americans are living paycheck to paycheck and aren't able to save for retirement. SECURE 2.0 will allow for penalty-free withdrawals from retirement accounts in an emergency, and it will also incentivize employees to have an emergency savings fund, with retirement plan benefits. Tricia explains.
There will soon be a student loan 401k match, allowing employers to match student loan payments in retirement accounts for employees, according to their existing plan rules.
Part time workers will be able to contribute to a retirement plan, and if you employ a domestic employee, such as a nanny, or home health care aide, you can create a SEP for them.
One of Paula's favorite aspects of SECURE 2.0 is the ability to convert unused money from a 529 education savings plan to a Roth IRA. Not everyone uses that money for college or a trade school - this will allow them to convert that money into a post-tax retirement plan.

Tricia Bailey from Future Plan rejoins us today to talk about savings vehicles for the self-employed. We start with the various limits on SEP IRAs and various 401k plans. This can include a spouse if he or she is being paid by the business.
We spend a lot of time today on a vehicle that isn't often discussed - a cash balance plan. This is an amazing opportunity for high net-worth individuals, who wouldn't have enough savings to support their lifestyle in retirement-based contributions limits of the traditional methods. You can put $260,000 or more per year into this account depending on your age and income. It's pre-tax dollars, so it is not included in your annual income. Yes, you'll have to pay taxes upon withdrawal, but that could be at a time when you're in a lower tax bracket.
Tricia shares examples from doctors and dentists, and what they were able to accomplish with plans like these. Or, if you have a "side hustle" in addition to your 9-5 job, that "side hustle" cash could be saved similarly.
These plans can also be used to mitigate tax exposure when selling a business or dealing with succession planning. Tricia explains some of the rules around contribution limits and timeframes.

There are many mistakes you can make when applying for a mortgage, Today, Paula Christine and Jon are joined by Aelene Vanderveen of Cross Country Mortgage. Aelene will walk us through some common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
A mortgage calculation looks at three main categories - income, assets, credit, and collateral. The first three are largely within your control. Aelene talks about not making any large purchases or gaining a large asset while going through the home-buying process. As the saying goes, "You can't borrow money to borrow money." She explains what this means.
Don't open any new lines of credit - even those department store cards that offer discounts for small purchases. That can affect your application, as can any credit pull. You may be excited to furnish your new home, but it's best to wait. Aelene also explains why it maynot be a good idea to pay off medical debt during this period. Seems counterintuitive. The bottom line, talk to your lender before making any financial moves.
We also spend some time on credit scores, what goes into it, and why your credit history and debt-to-credit ratio is crucial. In fact, during the tumult of 2008, some borrowers' credit scores dropped, simply because credit card companies lowered their limits!
What if you're self-employed, like Paula and Jon? Aileen says you'll likely need your last two years of tax returns, plus a rough P&L statement for the current year.
What if you're applying with someone else - such as a spouse or even a friend/roommate? Your lender will take the middle of the three credit scores for each applicant, and the lower one goes into the file. This is important to think about if you can get approved on one person's income vs. two.
At the end of the day, the most important thing is to overcommunicate with your lender. If you aren't sure about something, ask!

This week, Paula and Jon are joined by Tricia Chau of Payroll Vault, for a walk through the deductions that come out of your paycheck. The amount that is deducted from your paycheck can be quite surprising!
First is the FICA tax, which stands for the Federal Insurance Contributions Act - which includes Social Security and Medicare taxes.
Next, we break down deductions, both voluntary and involuntary. Federal and state withholding can depend on what you designate on your W4 form. Tricia explains how the W4 form has recently changed, to make it more about income and less about exemptions. Regardless, keeping this form updated, especially when you have a major life event, is crucial in making sure the right amount of taxes is being deducted from your paycheck.
If you have questions about this, talk to your accountant, CPA, or financial advisor - this is not something you should be discussing with your employer.
Voluntary deductions can include health insurance, 401k and other investments, and health care if related to a 125 plan, which Tricia explains.
How important is it to understand your deductions and make sure they are being taken out correctly? Tricia shares some horror stories of what can go wrong.
Tricia works with employers at Payroll Vault, and you can find her at https://payrollvault.com/178 or via phone at 248-833-6400.

Monica Fochtman, PhD, is a career clarity coach and resume expert, specializing in helping people find their true passion, with her company Sheldrake Consulting. When Paula's own son struggled with finding his ideal career, Paula reached out to Monica to come on the show.
We start with a look at resumes in 2023. Talking about ourselves and our strengths is important, and we are often tempted to list all of our strengths on a resume, but Monica explains why it's better to focus on some key areas, tailored to the job you're applying for.
We also discuss LinkedIn, where it's possible to grow your network exponentially. And it's important to always be active on LinkedIn, not just when you're job-hunting. The value in this is building your network before you need it. In fact, schedule your time to be active on the platform, just as you would plan out everything else on your to-do list, and make a habit of it.
Monica started her business in 2017 when she discovered a passion for helping people find their ideal careers. And she says there are two schools of thought - following your passion as a career, or having a separate career that allows you to follow your passion when you aren't at work.

Paula Christine's son just started a new job, and he had a pile of benefits paperwork dumped on him. Today, Paula welcomes Angela from Bridged Benefit Solutions to break it all down.
A phrase like "accidental death and dismemberment" sounds terrifying. But as Angela explains, it's a useful add-on to a life insurance policy that creates additional benefit for your loved ones should the unthinkable happen to you.
We also spend some time on life insurance policies, breaking them down as an employee benefit and whether or not it can be portable if you leave your job. Also, should you have children or grandchildren, why you may want to take out policies on them. It's an awful thing to think about, but we've all seen the terrible stories behind GoFundMe accounts in times of tragedy.
What about short-term vs long-term disability? Ideally you'll have both, but Angela explains the differences between them. And Paula explains how this ties into financial planning and how it can interact with saving for an emergency fund.
We also talk about hospital policies, accident policies, and critical illness policies. Angela gives some examples of how these can pay out.
And what options do you have if you're self-employed, like Paula and Jon?

401(K) plans are complicated! Today, Paula and Jon are joined by 401(K) expert Tricia Bailey. We're going to cover what employees need to know about their plans.
One of the biggest things plan participants don't understand are the fees associated with the plan. How much do employers pick up vs. how much do employees themselves cover? Because this information is disclosed in a complicated form, listed in percentages, few employees read it. And even fewer understand it! That's why it can be so important to work with a financial advisor or financial planner to really understand this. Is the plan a good fit, or should you be allocating more toward other retirement vehicles?
80% of the population uses "set it and forget it" style target date funds, based on their age. Well, everyone's financial situation is different, and one size certainly does not fit all. And two plans, with the same target date, might be managed completely differently by two different companies!
When it comes to fees, Paula mentions not all fees are bad. Sometimes, free means you get what you pay for. But understanding what fees you are paying, and what services they are going toward, is really key in planning your financial future.
With the recently passed SECURE Act 2.0, there will be additional vehicles set up to help Americans save for retirement. This will be a welcome change, as the vast majority do not have nearly enough saved for their future. Paula shares the story of a very rude awakening for a couple she just met with.
For solo entrepreneurs, there are retirement vehicles such as a solo 401(K) and a SEP IRA. Tricia explains how they work. But if you are a very high earner, the contribution limits on these accounts will not allow you to have the same lifestyle in retirement that you have now. She breaks down the numbers, and some ways to save a much larger nest egg for retirement.

Carolyn Feldman of Nationwide Credit Clearing rejoins us this week to continue the conversation about what she and her company do.
Nobody intends to get in debt, but it happens. The problem with so-called "credit counseling" or "debt consolidation" is that, often, they have you stop making payments on your debts before they can get involved. This will tank your credit score. Carolyn and Paula talk about other ways to handle debt. But if your credit score is bad, that's where Nationwide Credit Clearing comes in.
Not only are they the only legal credit repair company in the country, they have industry-exclusive access to your FICO score, worked out with the company itself. They can check on your credit score without dinging you, and see exactly what's going on. From there, they are able to dispute any bad marks with the 3 major credit bureaus and actually have them removed from your report.
Carolyn also talks about establishing credit for someone. When done right, a parent or spouse can co-sign a lease or other document to help build credit. But the pitfall is that if payments are not made, it can sink the credit scores of both individuals.
Do you know about the 30% rule? Using more than 30% of your available credit can damage your credit score. And while it's supposed to be 30% of your total credit, that's not what Carolyn has seen in the real world.
We spend some time in this episode talking about all the scams out there. What are the red flags to watch out for? A good resource is RipOffReport.com.
Also in today's episode, Jon reveals something about his financial history that he's never talked about on the show before...

Carolyn Feldman of Nationwide Credit Clearing joins us for the first of two episodes today. We cover a wide range of topics from establishing credit to the difference between a FICO Score and what she calls a "Fake-O Score."
When you're young and you need to establish credit, you may want to consider a secured credit card - Carolyn explains the difference between secured and unsecured, as well as how credit utilization and bill payment affect your credit score.
To get your true credit score, you'll want to get your FICO Score from MyFico.com. You're able to look at your true FICO score (that potential lenders see) once per year at each of the three major credit bureaus, for free.
Beware a website called Credit Karma - this is only an estimate of your score. They have only 2 of the 3 major credit bureaus - Experian won't participate with them. So Carolyn calls Credit Karma your "Fake-O" score as opposed to your FICO score.
If you're a Capital Once customer, they have a program called Credit Wise. This is actually a true FICO Score.
It's important to know the difference between a hard pull of your credit history and a soft pull. When you check your own score, that's a soft pull. There's no penalty for checking on your own rating. When a third party pulls your score, that's a hard pull, and can affect your rating.
Credit cards have billing cycles and statements, and credit bureaus are no different - this will affect when new information hits your credit report. Carolyn says to think of it like a report card. She explains why.
If you find an error on your credit card report, you can challenge it. And, by law, if the creditor doesn't respond in 30 days, it comes off your report. But remember, often the dispute is with the lender, not the actual credit reporting agency.
We also spend some time on medical bills, which are often a source of financial hardship. Medical bills do not go on your credit report until they are unpaid. This is why it's a good idea to even make small payments on a large bill, so they remain in repayment.

Today, Paula and Jon are joined by Sue, a banking expert who will walk us through the different types of bank accounts. We start with an explanation of FDIC insurance, and what that means (given recent events in the news).
To find out more about the coverage in your accounts, you can visit the "Edie" tool on the FDIC website here: https://edie.fdic.gov/
Many banks offer the same products, but Sue says if you want to have a more personal relationship with your institution, you should consider a community bank instead of a larger one.
In terms of fees, there are fees for not keeping a minimum balance on some accounts, and of course overdraft fees. Paula, Sue, and Jon discuss where overdraft protection comes in and when/where that might be appropriate for you. Ideally, you never want to overdraft your account, but it can happen.
Next, we talk about the differences between savings and money market accounts. Savings accounts typically have a lower balance requirement, but don't pay as high an interest rate. One idea is to keep one of each - and try to leave the money market account separate from your savings. Even if it is liquid and accessible, you'd ideally like to leave the money that's earning more interest alone!
There are also CDs or certificates of deposit. CDs typically pay a higher interest rate than money market and savings accounts, but you committed to a predetermined time period. Withdrawing funds early can result in a penalty.
Finally, we talk about credit vs debit cards. Credit cards are easier to recover from fraudulent use, and can earn perks like airline miles, but you need to be able to pay off the balance every month.

March is National Credit Education Month. As it draws to a close, today, Paula Christine and Producer Jon Gay do a deep dive into credit scores. Why are they important, how do you build credit, and how do you rebuild your credit score if it's dropped?
There are many ways to establish credit when you're young. This could mean using a secured credit card (where the limit is backed up by a deposit in a bank account). Or it could mean having a minor as a co-signer on a loan, such as an auto loan. Just be sure you're making those payments!
Why is a credit score important? It will affect your ability to get a home or car loan and the interest rate you'll pay. And here in Michigan, it can even affect your car insurance rate. This is unfair, and there's work being done to change this, but for now, it remains the law.
How do you find your credit score? There are three credit bureaus that you can check online - Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion. You should download your credit report and ensure there are no mistakes. And if there are marks against you, you should work to fix them. Paula also suggests freezing your credit, and only unfreezing it when applying for a loan. Any inquiries into your credit history (whether you asked for them or not!) can impact your score.
If you have a low credit score, you might also consider being a co-signer on a loan. And if you're in debt, some companies exist to help you create a plan to get out. Or, you can even negotiate with credit card companies yourself!
You can work your way out of debt with discipline. You can pay off multiple credit cards one at a time, either by smallest balance or highest interest rate.
Paula has several tips on getting out of debt on the resource page of her website here: https://paulachristine.com/resources/

Today, Paula Christine is joined by listener Elizabeth, mom to a two-year-old daughter. And she has questions about how to best protect her child, financially.
Importantly, she has a 529 College Savings Plan set up for her. And with recent updates to the SECURE Act, that money is now more flexible. If her daughter ends up not using that money for qualified educational expenses, it can be rolled into a Roth IRA later on.
Speaking of Roth IRA's, Elizabeth also wants to know how early she can set up a Roth IRA for her daughter. Turns out, there's no minimum age, but the child has to be paid wages. And we get into some interesting ideas on how this could work, even for a baby!
We also talk about life insurance -both for parents and baby. Life insurance is critical, so that the income of a parent can be replaced if something happens to them. And for the baby, Elizabeth asks about a Gerber plan. Paula talks about something similar she took out on her own kids.
The most important thing you should do for a child is to designate a legal guardian in the event something happens to his or her parents - this is explained well by Shannon DeWall in last week's episode.
It's also crucial that you take care of your own finances, not just your kid's. Too often, parents focus on providing for their kids before themselves. And if your own financial house isn't in order, that will put the burden of taking care of you onto your children.

Recently, Paula Christine was talking to her daughter about an uncomfortable topic - what would happen to her daughter's kids if she weren't around?
Attorney Shannon DeWall rejoins us today to talk about the documents you need to protect your children should you pass away or even become incapacitated. They include a will, a standalone document for guardianship in the event of disability, and (in many cases) a trust. Minors cannot inherit money, but that money can go into a trust to provide for them.
Shannon also advises against making the trustee and the guardian the same person. This can provide some valuable checks and balances to protect the children.
Paula makes a good point in today's episode - if you don't stipulate a guardian for your children, that can end up in probate, and the kids could go with someone you don't even like! Also, what if you're still alive, but incapacitated? You need to prepare for that possibility as well.
We do break down the case of divorced parents. Often, the surviving parent would get custody. But if the parent who passed away had full custody previously, that may not be the case.

Shannon Maloney rejoins Paula and Jon this week to talk about savings tips that she shares with her clients. It's important to save for retirement, but that's extremely difficult when you're living paycheck to paycheck.
If you're still feeling the pain from holiday spending, you'll love Shannon's first tip. Buy a gift card every month for the whole year. Come December, you can use them or gift them, without taking a huge holiday hit to your wallet.
We also talk about credit cards. Treat them as cash; only spend what you can pay off in full every month. Yes, there are perks like travel rewards, but if you accumulate interest on your cards, that will far outweigh any benefits. When spending, think about "needs" vs. "wants."
You can set up your mortgage to pay bi-weekly instead of monthly. This will create two extra payments a year so you can get the balance down faster.
Paula and Shannon talk about thrift stores. Many times you can find tags-on clothing . This has benefitted everyone from Paula to Shannon's teenage daughters.
Prescriptions can be a huge part of our monthly spend, especially as we get older. Talk to your pharmacist about generics, or discount plans like GoodRx.
We spend some time on tracking your spending, including a discussion of the "envelope system" that Dave Ramsey popularized. How much are you spending on going out to eat, on groceries, and on takeout? Taking stock of this was a real eye-opener for Paula.
Bottled water, coffee, speeding and parking tickets - there are so many areas where you can save a lot of money with some due diligence.

Today, we welcome back Shannon Maloney of Strategic Retirement Partners to talk about retirement plans - and how important it is to start saving early.
Social Security is not going to cover your cost of living in retirement. So your retirement plan becomes your paycheck after you stop working. Time in the market is one of the most important ways to grow these accounts, due to the power of compounding interest. Shannon also talks about dollar cost averaging, which is putting the same amount of money into the market. Now, this may seem counter-intuitive after a year like 2022, but you're actually buying the market "on sale." She explains. Finally, take advantage of your employer match. This is, essentially, free money from your employer that you're leaving on the table if you don't participate.
Targeted retirement funds based on investors' age have taken some of the stress out of investing, and that's certainly one way to plan for retirement. But most people don't know much about the space; that's why Shannon is thrilled that Michigan is mandating this be taught in schools starting in 2024.
Paula and Shannon touch on the importance of budgeting, and prioritizing your retirement savings. This should be an important line item in your budget, like a mortgage, groceries, etc.
We also answer the question: Should you save for retirement first, pay off debt first, or both?

Today, Paula Christine and Producer Jon cover two key questions. Do I have enough money to survive on my own? And if not, how do I get there?
This is a conversation Paula's been having with clients frequently. This could be someone who wants to get out of a bad relationship, or someone who wants to move out of Mom and Dad's house and out on there own. The first step is figuring out how much money you need to survive on your own. That means looking at money in and money out. Is there a gap? If so, how do you close that gap?
Solutions are going to be different for everyone. Maybe it's a second job, or going back to school to raise your earning potential. But maybe you have child care issues. Maybe you start simple, by shopping your cell phone bill around or cutting cable if you watch mostly streaming services. This is why it's critical to 1) think outside the box and 2) change your mindset.
A scarcity mindset will have you living paycheck to paycheck and always finding excuses as to why you can't break this cycle. But an abundance mindset involves appreciating what you have and planning for a positive outcome. This isn't easy. Money can be emotional. But it's important.
Paula has two webinars coming up that can help you get started. The first is on grocery budgeting, next Tuesday February 28th. And you can also check out her Making Money Matter course. Both are available at https://paulachristine.com/
Want to know more? Email Paula: Paula@PaulaChristine.com.
On Tuesday, February 28th, Paula Christine will host a webinar on a topic that's become increasingly important in recent months - grocery budgets. It will be offered twice, at 11am and 8pm Eastern, and you can link to it here: https://learn.paulachristine.com/budgeting-for-groceries
The first step is figuring out what your food costs look like. Paula found out she's spending much more than she thought, and she wouldn't be surprised if it's the same for you.
Once you figure out what you're spending, you have to create a budget, and have a plan for what happens if you go over that budget. Does that money come out of next week's budget? Does it come out of this week's budget somewhere? Which parts of your budget are static, and which parts are flexible? Paula and Producer Jon walk through some examples.
Another way to save on your food budget is to cut back on going out to eat and on getting takeout. These costs have skyrocketed with inflation, to say nothing about all the extra fees for services like DoorDash, GrubHub, Postmates, and more!
Remember how grandma used to clip coupons? Well, you don't need scissors anymore. Just look online. Often, grocery stores will have sales, and you can find the best prices on everything from produce to pop. And you can even put your grocery together online for pickup. Not only will this allow you to make sure you're within your budget, it will also prevent you from walking into the store and making those impulse buys!
What about buying in bulk? Paula and Jon talk about the benefits of big box stores like Costco. You can even buy meat to freeze. And speaking of freezers, how many meals are in yours right now? Knowing this can save money and cut down on food waste.
Meal delivery services - Jon and his wife have tried one. He and Paula explore the pros and cons and when one might be a good decision for you.
This online course and webinar will be really useful in creating a grocery budget. Paula's got 20 tips. Some may work for you, and some may not. But we're sure you'll get something valuable. Again, you can find more information here: https://learn.paulachristine.com/budgeting-for-groceries

Angela Buccellato does more than write resumes at the Resume Rescue. She helps clients change companies and careers, and always has her finger on the pulse of the job market. She joins Paula Christine today to talk about just that.
It's vitally important to keep your resume updated. But it doesn't have to be an arduous process. Set a periodic reminder to record what you've accomplished recently - career-wise, volunteering, anything. That way, when you need an updated resume, it won't be so daunting.
Paula and Angela talk about that scary word "networking" - and Angela explains that the concept doesn't have to be so intimidating. It's often easier than you think.
Have you had a 6% raise in the last year? If the answer is no, you took a pay cut. Angela explains why.
LinkedIn is an extremely powerful tool when used well. In fact, Angela can see a world where it's used instead of resumes and the dreaded cover letter.
We'll also hear Angela's back story, and how her experience as a corporate recruiter made her so passionate about being a "personal cheerleader" for her clients, and making sure they're happy and paid what they're worth. She gives us a couple client success stories.

In the second of our two-part series with Dr. Sally Palaian, we take a closer look at couples and money. As with all things in marriage, communication is key. Everyone has their own story, behaviors, dreams, aspirations, disappointments, hopes, and ideas about what money is and what money's not. As we referenced in our previous episode, it is often formed by your upbringing.
If you are entering a partnership with someone, it is essential to talk about money, how the finances will be set up and how they will be discussed. Sometimes there is some level of interdependency. Opposites attract, as we know. And often, a spender and a saver may pair up.
Dr. Sally goes through some possible solutions to money disagreements today. If internal communication in the relationship isn't enough, you can seek help. And you don't have to start with a mental health professional - you can begin with a CPA or financial advisor.
Often, the money relationship in a couple can be tied to power. That's why it's so important to educate yourself about money, and all money matters.

Dr. Sally Palaian has 32 years of therapy experience and she joins Paula and Jon today for the first of a two-part series on changing your mindset. We use money as an example, but these concepts extend far beyond the financial world.
We learn mindset from our parents - some of it consciously, some of it not. What did you hear about money and class and situation when you were a child? Has it stuck with you? Kids are sponges for the information they get from their parents and he world around them.
The first step in changing mindset is awareness. You have to be aware of what you're doing and thinking, and how you're behaving. One you have that awareness, you can start making changes. Maybe it takes an outside perspective, like a friend, family member, or colleague. Producer Jon jumps in and shares how his wife was that for him. The second step is setting boundaries. Sally and Paula share some examples.
We also talk today about "abundance mindset" vs "scarcity mindset." It may be very difficult to shift from one to the other, but Dr. Palaian shares another "in between" state of mind. Not knowing. Don't assume scarcity or abundance, but let the world come to you.

Rising mortgage rates have scared many potential home buyers, but as we will learn today, it still might be a great time to buy a house. Paula and Jon are rejoined by one of their very first guests, Marc Edelstein of Ross Mortgage.
Yes, interest rates have come up, but home prices have come down. Marc walks us through the math of why your final numbers today might not be far off from where they were in the past. In many ways, we are returning to a bit of a "normal" market.
We also talk about owning vs. renting. Every individual's situation is different of course, and sometimes your circumstances may dictate that you need to be a renter. Marc tells us why he considers paying rent to be a "100% interest rate" and why it's advantageous to buy, as a way to accumulate wealth.
What happens if mortgage rates drop? Even a 1% lowering of interest rates can be worth refinancing your home, and Marc explains why.
Producer Jon also jumps in with his key takeaway, as he and his wife are be looking for a bigger home soon.
If you'd like to reach Marc, you can do so via his website, https://www.thatmortgagebanker.com/
Or give him a call at (248) 379-6749. Marc is powered by Ross mortgage NMLS number 533706.

It's no secret that our health care system is broken. It's overcomplicated and too expensive. For years, free market forces that have revolutionized other industries haven't been able to break through the health care wall. SALTA Direct Primary Care is changing that - Dr. John Blanchard is Paula's guest today.
SALTA charges $90 per month for unlimited primary care and telehealth visits, providing services that cover 80% of most Americans' health care needs. This is an alternative to paying a high dollar amount out of pocket until you meet your insurance deductible. And what about the services that SALTA does not provide? Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, they have access to the cash prices for the same services at many different providers. Did you know that some hospital systems in Michigan charge three times the price for the same exact quality of care?
Does a system like this mean you no longer need health insurance? No. But John believes we start looking at health insurance the way we look at car insurance. We don't insure against oil changes, brake pads, and tires? We only insure against catastrophic events like car accidents. That's how we should look at our health insurance. We should have coverage so that a major sickness or hospital stay won't bankrupt us, but we don't need to be covering physicals, common colds, and more.
The way our current health care system is set up, it relies on healthy young people to pay into the system, to cover the health care costs of older individuals who need more care. John hopes that as more younger folks opt out of the traditional system, it will force changes that will benefit all of us.

Manhattan divorce attorney Lisa Zeiderman is today's guest. Unfortunately, the beginning of the year is when many people begin thinking about divorce. Lisa is CDFA, or Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. She has the training to help you through the legal aspects of your divorce, but she can also help a client determine how assets may be divided up, and how to financial plan for their future post-divorce. This can be a valuable asset during a very emotional time.
Paula asks what constitutes separate property versus marital property. Lisa explains, and shows us the valuable of a prenuptial agreement, or even a post-nuptial agreement in some cases. One of the big financial pitfalls in marriage is intermingling of financial assets- that can really complicate a settlement, especially without a prior agreement in place.
Next, Paula and Lisa talk about debt. In what cases would you be responsible for your partner's debt after a divorce?
We cover the documents you should have, if possible, prior to meeting with a divorce attorney. And Lisa also explains what you should look for in a divorce attorney. You want someone who's going to be honest with you, and that you connect with. And we also spend some time on the discovery process - how exactly a divorce works.

We want to wish everyone Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. We'll be back with new episodes in January!
Nobody wants to talk about their own death, let alone plan for it. But the holidays can be a good time to have conversations with your loved ones about your final wishes. After all, would you rather have these chats now when everyone is healthy, or under the duress of an illness?
Lynn Habrowski of Great Lakes Wealth Planning rejoins the show today to talk about the Family Love Letter. This is not a legal document like a will or a trust. However, it's a way to instruct your loved ones about your final wishes for what's not covered in those documents.
The Family Love Letter can explain things like online accounts, funeral wishes, plans for pets, storage lockers, and so much more. It's giving your family members the gifts of time and information, during what will be a very difficult and stressful time for them.

Anya Cheng has come a long way from her blue collar roots in Taiwan, coming to the United States to earn multiple degrees, and having led teams at eBay, Target, Facebook, and more. She is the founder of Taelor, a clothing rental subscription service, and she joins Paula today to talk about non-traditional holiday gifts.
One trend is people caring more about experiences than physical stuff. We've talked about this in a previous episode. A loved one will remember time spent with you much more than they will remember a gift card. Also, throughout COVID, we've learned we all have too much "stuff." It becomes clutter. People don't need more clutter; they need to get out.
Another trend is sustainability and the circular economy. This can refer to the products you buy, and also how they are packaged. More and more elements of the process can be sustainable. Anya tells us about a clothing line that was created with cinnamon, and a performance line of suits in London that was created from repurposed coffee grounds! Because of the nature of the grounds, the suits are odor resistant. (And no, they don't smell like coffee.)
Anya's had quite a journey, really living the American Dream. Paula asks her what advice she'd give her younger self. You'll hear what Anya means when says that life isn't a mountain, it's more like surfing. Also, be curious and invest in yourself.
Anya tells us about her clothing rental company, Taelor, and it's many applications. Some folks use the service when they go on vacation. They simply drop the prepaid shipping in their hotel lobby when they leave, and they don't come home with dirty laundry. Or, if you're living in Florida but visiting family in Michigan over Christmas, you could have warmer clothes sent directly to your in-laws.
You can check out Anya's website at https://taelor.style/

When journalist Ilyssa Panitz went through her divorce, she had no idea what to expect. It was as if lawyers and judges were speaking a different language. At one point, the judge asked her if she understood what was happening, and she could barely answer him. She went to media, she went to Google. And she could not find a journalist that was distilling down topics around divorce. so that everyday people could understand. Like many of us, she reinvented herself during COVID, and became a divorce journalist.
Ilyssa believes knowledge is empowering. By translating the complex language of divorce through her columns, radio show, and podcast, she helps people going through the divorce process understand topics. They feel empowered and prepared to answer questions.
Ilyssa explains why the first step to take when getting a divorce is not to find a good attorney, it's to get on top of your finances. That's where a CDFA, or Certified Divorce Financial Analyst.
Today's guest wants you to learn from her mistakes. She'll feel successful if her errors can help others from making the same ones. As she says, she wants you to survive and thrive.
Ilyssa explains she's not your divorce attorney, CPA, or PhD. She's your "Waze," your "GPS" through the process. And it really came full circle for her with both of her kids. When they had friends going through divorce, they came to their Mom, because she helps people through this process.

Today, Paula Christine welcomes back her first repeat guest, Shannon DeWall of DeWall Law. Shannon is an estate planning attorney, and we're covering the importance of a special needs trust. While this information isn't relevant to everyone, it's critically important to some of our listeners.
A special needs trust is set up to take care of the needs of an individual with special needs, often upon the death of both of their parents. Often, individuals with special needs are eligible for Medicare as well as SSI, or supplemental security income. If someone ends up with a large inheritance, this can jeopardize their ability to participate in both of these government programs, which provide more than just financial benefit.
Who should be the trustee, or in charge of the trust? Most parents assume it will be a sibling or other family member, but that can be an undue burden to place on a relative. This needs to be worked out when the trust is set up, long before the parents have passed. And perhaps the trustee is a lawyer, trusted friend, or other professional. The key is for them to have an understanding of how the trust works, as well as what can and can't be done with that money.
For more information on this topic, you can reach Shannon at Shannon@Dewall-law.com or at 734-772-1220. Her website is: https://dewall-law.com/

Today, Paula Christine is joined by Michael Fischer of Ross Mortgage. Michael is an expert in the field of VA loans. Often, veterans don't take advantages of these opportunities because either a) they don't know about them or b) they've received bad information.
A VA loan can often mean a zero down payment for recipients, provided they meet the requirements of using the home as a primary residence, as well as various criteria for their time served in the military. And this can easily be shown with what the VA calls an entitlement certificate.
Not only can a VA loan involve zero money down, it can also avoid PMI, or mortgage insurance, thereby lowering the rate.
Michael also dispels the myth that VA loans are harder to get or process. The numbers show no difference in loan approval rates between VA and traditional loans. In fact, many realtors and loan officers are not educated in the VA space, and this can cause them to pass bad information on to our veterans! This is why Michael and some colleagues created the Veteran Mortgage Advisor program, in order to educate service professionals about the benefits available to our military members.
VA loans are not harder to close, they don't take longer to close, and the inspection process is not harder. Michael explains where some of these myths come from and how he's trying to get the word out. He also has a class called "Present a VA offer. The seller will accept." This educates buying agents on how to explain the VA loan process to selling agents - focusing more on the bottom line for the seller.
Finally, a VA loan can actually be used as a way for our servicemen and women to build wealth. While a VA loan must be used on a primary residence, if you relocate to a different primary residence, you can rent out the first and buy a new one, provided you are under the lending cap. Michael explains the eligibility requirements and how this can be used as a wealth building vehicle for our military.

Saving money for retirement is important, but where should you be putting that money? Today, Paula Christine is joined by CPA Marty Talty of Kopmeyer Talty to break this down and dispel some myths. Often you hear "just max out your retirement plan," but it's rarely that simple. There's an old adage that you'll be in a lower tax bracket in retirement, but Paula explains why she thinks you should plan to be in a similar tax bracket in retirement.
First, Marty explains the benefit of traditional IRAs and 401k accounts. Your money grows tax deferred, meaning you don't pay taxes until you withdraw the funds. And that could bump up your tax bracket in retirement.
Another vehicle is the Roth IRA, where the taxes are paid up front, and it's not taxed upon withdrawal. Marty also explains the new rules around inherited plans. Nobody wants to think about their own death, but leaving money to your heirs could be an important factor in your financial planning. Marty and Paula also explain capital gains - what is a capital gain and how is it taxed differently?
Next, we talk about non-qualified money. This is money that is liquid - you don't need to make any requirements to access it or withdraw. Having money that you can get to immediately is so important, in the event of those unpredictable life events.
Even though every individual situation is different, Paula asks Marty for some general guidance on how to allocate your savings -how much money should be going into each of these "buckets?" And what about 401k match, if your employer offers it.
The bottom line is that a CPA, financial planner, and estate planner are all essential elements to planning your financial future. Many Americans are now living as long in retirement as they were in their working years, and you need to be prepared.

It's hard to believe we are into November, with the holiday season fast approaching. Too often, holiday spending creates debt for us, as we spend beyond our means and pay for it in the following year.
Today, Paula explains how to avoid these pitfalls. The first strategy of course, is to budget for the year ahead of time. This means having a set budget for the holidays, dividing that number by 12, and setting aside money every month to prepare.
Producer Jon says that he likes to spoil his nieces and nephews every holiday. But when you were a kid, which do you remember more? The cash in a Christmas card from Grandma and Grandpa, or the time you spent with them? Was it a play, a baseball game, or even just a fun sleepover at their house? Not every gift needs to be monetary.
If, however, you find yourself in debt after the holidays, it's important to pay it down aggressively. This is especially true if it's credit card debt that carries interest. We've talked in previous episodes about the power of compound interest, and how it can really add value to your investments. But it can also work the other way. If there's interest on debt you owe, that can also compound, costing you much more than the price of the gifts you purchased.
With inflation rising throughout 2022, the holidays are going to cost more this year. That includes gifts and travel. Where can you save on that? Can you travel at off-peak times, like flying on Tuesdays? Some folks are even skipping holiday travel and flying or driving at more convenient times to see family.
Really, the key to holiday spending is planning. If you haven't planned for 2022, take note of what you spend so you can plan for 2023 throughout the year.
And if you need help with this, or any other topic related to managing your money, reach out to Paula Christine at https://paulachristine.com/

Today, Paula is joined by business and executive coach Jon Dwoskin to talk about mindset and goalsetting.
We may not realize that our mindset comes from what we learn at a very young age, from our parents, grandparents, and other surroundings. Jon explains the deliberate effort to quiet these "voices in your head," and differentiate your own thoughts from the ones that have been imparted onto you by others.
Next we talk about goal setting. According to Jon, the key to goal setting is not to create giant "New Year's Resolution" type goals, but rather small attainable goals that you can easily get back to if you stumble.
This leads into a discussion about "To-Do Lists," and how not to be overwhelmed by them. Prioritization is the name of the game here - you must be able to list your priorities, and be able to re-prioritize when something inevitably comes up.
Finally, Paula asks Jon what financial advice he would give his younger self. His answer may surprise you!

Today, Paula is joined by Linda Eliason of Acsia Partners, an expert in the long term care space. She shares some personal stories, from having to take care of her aging parents to a sudden health scare with her husband.
Long term care can be the most costly need for people. It's statistically likely to happen, and it's the least protected. Typically, parents and even grandparents assume that their children or grandchildren will care for them. But this really is an undue burden to place on a loved one, particularly if they weren't aware of this possibility.
Most people think of LTC as relating to a nursing home situation, but often, it can relate to in-home care for a patient, or even respite care for a primary caregiver. If a family member is the primary caregiver, it becomes paramount for them to take care of their own health and well-being.
Long term care is defined as needing assistance for 90 days or more for a patient who needs help with two or more of the six activities of daily living - bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, and continence.
Laura deals the myth that long term care is expensive, and shares how thinking about this when you are younger is so important. Your age will help dictate your cost, but your health will be what affects your eligibility. This is why it's so important to explore this when you are younger and healthier.

Paula Christine is joined today by Angela Mitchell of Bridged Benefit Solutions to discuss disability insurance - what it is, how you get it, and if you need it.
Angela starts with a stark reminder - the biggest asset we have is not our house or our car, it's our ability to earn a living. And we insure those other things - why don't we insure our ability to bring home a paycheck? Disability insurance will replace part of your wages if you are unable to work due to injury or illness, or sometimes even maternity leave.
Short term disability will generally cover 50-70% of your income for 13 or 26 weeks. Some policies are purchased from your employer, others are purchased by the individual. It's important to note that if the coverage is provided by your employer, your benefits can be taxed.
Long term disability will pay you out longer, potentially until you can collect social security. Again, this is based on your wages. It's important for folks who earn commissions to know this disability is based on your wage, not your commission.
If you can only afford one or the other, should you choose short term or long-term? Well, it depends. Angela explains the factors that should go into that decision.
Paula and Angela weigh the benefits of employee provided versus individually purchased plans. These can include premiums, pre-existing conditions, and more.
And finally, if you're employer does not offer disability, Angela talks about how to start that conversation.

After some great audience response to last week's show, we brought CFP Lynn Habrowski, of Great Lakes Wealth Planning, back today to take a deeper dive into different terms we often hear with regard to investing.
We start with the current market volatility we've seen in 2022 - what do the terms "bear market" and "bull market" mean? Lynn also explains why our current bear market environment correlates to the stimulus money the government printed to get us through COVID. Our current inflation is something we could see coming, and Lynn coached her clients to be prepared for it.
Lynn and Paula also explain index (and indices), asset allocation, and diversification. What do they all mean, and what's the difference between investing as a 20 year old and a 65 year old?
When it comes to investing, there are all kinds of different types of stocks to look at - growth stocks and value stocks. Small, mid, and large cap - and more. Lynn breaks these down.
We finish with a speed round, covering terms like portfolio, rate of return, interest, dividends, dollar cost averaging, capital gains, and capital losses.
It's good to have an understanding of these different financial terms, but it's more important to know why you're investing, and why you are using your current strategy.

Lynn Habrowski is a certified financial planner with Great Lakes Welath Planning and LPL Financial. She joins Paula Christine today to cover the basics of the market and investing. We start by defining the market, stocks, bonds, and other common terms.
It's very important to know the difference between short and long-term investing, as well as the difference between investing and trading. Investing is growing your money for your future. Trading is more about the money you can afford to lose. Lynn and Paula take a deep dive on that. Also, your sell strategy may be more important than your buy strategy.
We also cover the power of compound interest, and how a small investment at a young age can make a huge difference in your financial future.

This week, Diane Winner is back to talk about Traditional IRAs and how they differ from the Roth IRAs we discussed in last week's episode.
The biggest difference is that you pay taxes on the way in to a Roth IRA, but on the way out of a Traditional IRA. Diane and Paula break down the pros and cons to each strategy. Also, we talk about the strict penalties that can be levied against you if you do not take required minimum distributions out of your traditional IRA beginning at age 72.
No matter which retirement vehicles you use, the most important thing is to start saving early, and take advantage of compound interest. Paula explains.

Insurance can be very confusing. From homeowners to renters to auto, it's often hard to know how much coverage you need. Today, Paula is joined by Stacey Hill of Farmers Insurance to break it all down.
We start with auto insurance and what all the numbers and slashes on your policy mean. Often, our top priority is to keep our premiums down, but Stacey explains what other factors need to go into those decisions.
Paula asks about umbrella policies, which can have an important place in your financial picture. But often, you need to meet certain coverage minimums in your other insurance plans before you can qualify.
Next, Stacey walks us through renters' insurance. There are Parts A-D, and many renters aren't aware of all the coverage they have - from loss of use to separate structures to replacement costs.
With homeowners insurance, Paula was surprised to learn that the claims follow the address, not the policy holder. Stacey explains why.
Finally, we cover the factors you should consider when choosing your various insurance coverage.

Jan Sherman of The Benefits Edge is known as "The Benefits Tamer." He helps his clients make sense of the complicated world of insurance, and that's what he's going to do with Paula Christine today.
We start with the basics. What is health insurance? It's a contract - Jan explains.
We also cover differences between HMO's and PPO's, referrals, copays, and more. We define terms like "deductible" and premium," and the different levels of insurance you hit as you spend more money each year. We talk a lot about co-pays, but Jan says it's much more important to think about out-of-pocket maximums in the event of something catastrophic.
Jan explains the key difference between "preventive" and "diagnostic," and why your doctor, at a physical, will often schedule you for a follow-up. And don't be afraid to read and question your bills, and your explanation of benefits (EOB).
Finally. Paula asks Jan about HSA plans - and all the ways that money can be spent, tax free.
To find Jan Sherman at The Benefits Edge, you can call him at 248-788-0476. You can also visit his website, https://benefitstamer.com/ - or send him an email - jan@benefitstamer.com.

Today, Paula welcomes Eboney Byrne, Money Coach at Liberty Financial Services. Her tag line is "Have you told your money where to go?"
Eboney feels most people are controlled by their money, instead of taking control of it. This means not being afraid to look at the numbers and see where you're at. (Spoiler: It's often not as bad as you think.)
Know your "why." Eboney and Paula discuss figuring out your priorities and working them into your budget, and allowing yourself more than just the "bare bones" money. You need to plan to have fun once in awhile. And you're going to make mistakes. Be kind and forgive yourself.
Develop a checklist, create a budget, create a plan, understand why you're doing what you're doing, and then track your expenses and be kind to yourself.

When you start a new job, you often have a massive packet dumped on your desk, explaining your company's retirement plan options. It can be overwhelming. Today, Paula Christine breaks it down, with the help of her "401k Guru," Shannon Maloney of Strategic Retirement Partners.
The most important thing about a workplace retirement plan is that you should always participate, particularly in a company match situation. After all, if you saw free money laying on the street, you'd pick it up, right? Shannon explains this in easy numbers.
Once you elect to participate, which plan should you pick? The choices can be vast, but Shannon explains the "do it for me" plans, that come with target retirement dates built in.
Many people fall into the trap of borrowing money from their retirement plans. Paula and Shannon talk about why this is a very bad idea, and should only be used as a last resort.
"To Roth Or Not To Roth" - Shannon walks us through the difference between Roth and Non-Roth retirement plans, and the differences in the seed (when you put the money in) and the harvest (when you take the money out).
Finally, Paula and Shannon speak specifically to women. It's not that women are "risk averse," it's that they are "debt averse." And most women, especially moms, know how to stretch money.
To reach out to Shannon regarding the workplace plan you have for your employees, email her at Shannon@SRPretire.com.

In our first episode, host Paula Christine sits down with producer Jon Gay to talk about her background and why she started this podcast.
Paula Christine has been a financial coach for 20 years, and she brings a wealth of real-life experience to her work. She's lived paycheck to paycheck, been through divorce twice, and has had to start over. It's one thing for a financial coach to preach concepts. It's another to sit across the table from someone who's been in your shoes.
We often pick up bad financial habits when we are younger. Money has become a taboo topic, and we aren't teaching or learning good financial habits. It's Paula's goal to talk to listeners in all stages of life, from starting your first job to entering retirement.
