Peter Baines has followed an unconventional path from being a forensic police investigator solving homicides and leading international teams in scenes of crisis and disaster, to being a global keynote speaker, business consultant and philanthropist. In what reads like a spy-thriller, he has held roles with Interpol and the United Nations unravelling criminal mysteries and advising on counter-terrorism in Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Saudi Arabia.

Peter was part of the leadership team responding to the Bali bombings and in 2004 was called to lead the international response to the Boxing Day tsunami. Deeply touched by the number of children left without parents after the tsunami, he was inspired to establish the charity Hands Across the Water, which has raised over $30M. Peter has been recognised with the Order of Australia Medal and the Most Admirable Order of Direkgunabhorn from the King of Thailand. He has written three books including his latest, “Leadership Matters – stories and insights for leaders, achievers and visionaries.”

When not working, you'll find Peter tending to his farm, raising Hereford cattle and driving his tractor. He's an enthusiastic helicopter pilot and enjoys participating in ultra-marathons alongside his loyal companion, Burton.

34:20 How Social Mastery can help younger generations and the 4 areas of Social Mastery

40:10 Expanding the Social Mastery offering to a much wider Defence and APS (Australian Public Sector) cohort

Gene Tunny and Tim Hughes recently had Andrew as a guest on the Economics Explored Podcast where they discussed all things human performance, with insights into what Andrew focuses on when coaching top performers, including CEOs and elite athletes.

Andrew is regularly asked “what is the best way to become a Mental Skills Coach?” and it's a loaded question. There is no straight path, just like there is no straight path to mastery for any of my clients/athletes.

In a recent conversation with a coach Andrew said "I became a mental skills coach overnight, after 25 years of...studying science (exercise physiology), training as an elite middle distance runner, working as a personal trainer, working across multiple sports as a strength and conditioning coach, studying a Masters in coaching psychology, building and selling 2 businesses to large global companies, being treated for cancer, going through a marriage breakdown, and a few decades of experience in the corporate world..."

Performance Intelligence Podcast - similar format, new name, exciting opportunities.

1. Why the name change?

'Performance Intelligence’ provides a broader umbrella to explore and house content specific to ‘all things human performance.’

This aligns with my evolution as a mental skills coach to some of the world’s leading athletes, business leaders and entrepreneurs.

And Performance Intelligence is the name of the new book Dr Tom Buckley and I are releasing in late 2023.

2. What is Performance Intelligence?

"Performance Intelligence is the ability to recognise how physical, psychological and emotional states affect work and life, and adapting environments to optimise performance."

We have been evolving this concept for close to two decades, working with a range of high performers in multiple domains (sport, entertainment, the performing arts, academia, and the military) and Dr Tom added his medical and evidence-based lense.

You’ve heard of Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and Emotional Intelligence (EQ), we believe Performance Intelligence (PQ) is the third iteration.

Performance Intelligence applies to the way we turn up in relationships and the way we turn up at work. It applies to the way we perform in front of 10,000 people and the way we perform in front of one.

Performance Intelligence is a skill you can develop with the right training and the right mindset.

3. What does the new format look like?

Episodes are positioned into 3 broad categories, including:

a. High Performer Series: exploring the habits, tactics and strategies that have led to success for some of the world’s leading performers…

b. The Science Of: drilling down into the science of a specific performance-related construct, with leading domain experts…

c. Performer Spotlight: chatting with an individual client, a leader, or showcasing a team we have worked with and how they developed/applied Performance Intelligence…

The operating rhythm of this podcast reflects the way we work at StriveStronger and andrewmay.com with 40 new episodes a year, aligned with the 10 weeks of each school semester (what we call the In Season) and during the holidays (the Off Season), we publish a Bite Size interviews, which are the ‘best bits’ from previous episodes.

4. In Summary

  • A podcast exploring all things human performance with world-class domain experts
  • 3 different types of interview formats
  • 40 new episodes a year, released early on a Thu morning during the In Season
  • Bite Size episodes released every Sat morn and on Thursday’s during the Off Season

Psychological skills, or mental skills are tools for the mind. Just like putting a fitness program together to train the body to be healthy, fit, flexible and strong; you can do exactly the same for your brain. The primary goal of a mental skills program is to condition the mind and front load cognitive skills so that they can then be drawn upon when needed, under high levels of pressure.

Listen as Dr Nicola and I go into detail on 3 of the 12 Essential Mental Skills, and explore why mental health is not just about mental illness.

Dr Nicola Gates is a leading clinical neuropsychologist, neuroscience researcher, and best-selling author. She has worked in brain and cognitive health and well-being for over 25 years. Nicola is a leading speaker and has published dozens of peer-reviewed research papers.

You can find Nicola at her website.
