Content Warning: Discussion of colonization of Indigenous peoples.

In this episode, I tell the flood myth of the Mixe. The Mixe people originate from the Eastern Oaxaca region of Mexico and were never completely colonized by any other culture. They still maintain a tradition of subsistence farming and the exportation of luxury coffee in order to benefit their community. However, they did interact with the Spaniards and Germans from the 1500s on. The story itself is likely a syncretic mixture of Catholic missionary teachings and the Mixe religion's beliefs; though the structure appears to follow the narratology of Genesis or even Atrahasis

We'll analyze how this story compares to other flood myths, how the history of the Mixe affects the representations of the myth, and more throughout the episode. Furthermore, we'll discover some of the ways in which spiritual colonization is harmful in absence of physical colonization.
