In this episode, I tell a Hawaiian myth detailing a conflict between two Goddesses of the natural world: the snow and the lava. These two forces battle in a sled race that gives the story its name in some English translations: "A Strange Sled Race". The story was initially told and recorded in the early 1900s, though the structure and oral tradition surrounding it are likely much older. 

Alongside the telling, we will also be discussing the etiological nature of myth, the intracultural history of Hawaii, its relationship with colonial oppressors, and how Hawaiian myths may be commenting upon some of these dynamics that were present in their lives. The Goddesses clearly represent a form of conflict, but the nature of that conflict remains unclear, like so much in myth...
