Do you feel a sense of guilt around the successes in your life?
Is it hard for you to relax into enjoying the good things you have created and worked hard for? There are many reasons people feel guilty about their success and achievements and that guilt can not only stop you from fully enjoying your life but also keep you from further levelling up.
In this episode of Educators Moving On, Dr Shenelle DuBose pulls back the layers of success and asks us to dig deep and question whether we might be holding some success guilt, the psychological root of it and how to begin to free ourselves from it, highlighting:
“In the Black community, those who thrive sometimes feel a sense of guilt because they couldn’t take others with them. But here’s the difference. As a survivor, you believe that you received favour, or that you were spared while others suffered by some other force. But as thrivers, we know we did the work. We fought that good fight, we sacrificed, we did the things that others were not willing to do, we missed the parties, and we didn’t partake in a lot of the activities that would have been fun at the time, because we had a goal. But the guilt still remains. Why? It’s this thing called loyalty.”
