The trick to better relationships is better communication, and the trick to better communication skills is using values based communication. Today, co-hosts Ben and Paige Easter explain the benefits of switching to a values based model of communication.

When you enter a conversation from a place of knowing your values and understanding your personal responsibility for getting those values met, you will have more meaningful communications. Instead of making demands of others, reword your conversations into requests. By giving people the chance to decline a request without risk of consequences, you are respecting their agency and enabling them to make choices that are in alignment with their own values.

If you want to strengthen your interpersonal relationships and feel like your values are being met, you can benefit tremendously from switching to a values based model of communication. Learn the four steps to values based communication and how to begin implementing them in your daily interactions.

Quotes

  • “If you just take nothing else from this podcast, and you start thinking of communication in terms of what do I want from this, what is important to me about this conversation, and what's important to that person about this conversation, your conversations are likely to go up in quality.” (8:35-8:49 | Ben)
  • “I think about from there what that does to the quality of the relationship and then how willing I am to engage with that person when the impact of spending time with them is having this feeling that I don't get to have my values met, because I have to do something a certain way.” (13:09-13:26 | Paige)
  • “If I can figure out a way to invite somebody to contribute to my reality in a way that will also contribute to their reality, that is a win-win.” (16:40-16:47 | Ben)
  • “Maybe you can welcome me into an alternate reality where I see things from your perspective, and then it's no longer a problem for me.” (23:12-23:18 | Paige)
  • “Am I believing right now that I'm okay if this person says no to this request? Because if not, then it's a demand.” (24:23-24:29 | Ben)
