For all his pompous demeanour and deliberate verbosity, Johnson was not above childish pleasures. Once, on a walk in Lincolnshire with his friend Bennett Langton, he found a long slope of smooth grass, and declaring that 'he had not had a roll in a long time', took off his coat and -- and as he himself might have said -- precipitated himself down it, rotating longitudinally.
