We will use BandLab, a powerful, free, cloud-based DAW available on mobile (iOS/Android) and desktop browsers. It's ideal for beginners with professional features and a low barrier to entry.

BandLab GUI Walkthrough

The Graphical User Interface (GUI) has five key areas:

1. The Arrangement View: The central, timeline-based area for arranging music, loops, and recordings.
2. Tracks: Horizontal lanes on the left for specific instruments or audio sources.
3. Transport Controls: Standard Play, Stop, Record buttons, typically at the top or bottom.
4. The Mixer: A panel for adjusting volume and panning across all tracks.
5. The Library/Browser: Quick access to sounds, loops, virtual instruments, and effects.

Key Features: BandLab supports Virtual Instruments (MIDI) for sequencing notes and Audio Tracks for recording/importing sounds. Each track has an Effects Rack for adding effects like Reverb, Delay, and Compression.

Essential Budget Recording Equipment

While you can start with a phone, better audio quality requires basic, affordable gear.

The "Must-Haves"

• Headphones: Essential closed-back studio headphones (e.g., Samson, Audio-Technica M-series, Sennheiser, under $75) prevent mic bleed and ensure accurate mixing.
• Microphone: A simple, reliable USB Microphone (e.g., Blue Yeti, Rode NT-USB, $70 - $150) is the best starting point for capturing vocals/instruments, eliminating the need for an audio interface.

The "Next-Step" Upgrades
