Tiktok is currently under investigation by US state attorneys general on whether it negatively affects the mental health of its young users. According to a press release from the Massachusetts attorney general, Maura Healey, the coalition are looking to find if the company violated consumer protection laws or put the public at risk. The investigation will look into whether tiktok usage causes harm to young people and whether the company knew about those harms. More recently, regulators have been paying extra attention to Children's safety online in the US president Biden touched on the topic in his State of the Union address on Tuesday, holing on Congress to pass laws regulating privacy and advertising towards kids. While in the UK, the proposed online safety bill sets out to protect Children from harmful material. Even Meta, formerly known as Facebook, found itself in a series of congressional hearings last year after reports came out that it knowingly ignored internal research about Instagram's effects on teenagers mental health. The company, much like Tiktok, is still facing its own investigation to this day and with other apps like Snapchat, YouTube and even read it. Trying to appeal to younger audiences is inevitable that these apps will follow in the same fate.
