Next Generation Leaders celebrates the achievements of young alumni of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. On Zoom with us today is 2017 journalism graduate Polly Irungu, Digital Content Editor at New York Public Radio and founder of Black Women Photographers.

Polly Irungu is a photographer, digital editor, and multimedia journalist. At New York Public Radio (WYNC) she is responsible for managing social media for WNYC and PRX’s ‘The Takeaway’, a national NPR show with over 2 million listeners. In 2020, Irungu founded Black Women Photographers, a global community and online database of Black women photographers. Since the launch of her organization, she has raised more than $13,000 for the Black Women Photographers Relief Fund, built a global directory, and collaborated with VSCO's #BlackJoyMatters campaign.

As a photographer, Irungu's work has been featured in such publications as Refinery29, NPR, The Washington Post, BuzzFeed, CNN, HuffPost, OkayPlayer, OkayAfrica, Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and the University of Oregon.

Her work and school have taken her many places. She began her life in her hometown of Nairobi, Kenya and has since traveled to Topeka, Kansas, Eugene, Oregon, Washington, D.C., and now Brooklyn, New York.

In this episode Irungu shares her journey, why she decided to found Black Women Photographers, and what she hopes will come out of her advocacy work.
