Recently I caught up with Jaryd Krause from Buying Online Businesses. Jaryd has a wealth of knowledge on content sites, in particular, so we discussed his views on buy vs build. We also cover:

What niches are good for content sites

The balance of owning many smaller sites, vs one big website

What improvements you can make after buying a website

How you can be a more hands-off operator of a content website

You can learn more about him on his website here or check out his podcast with the same name.

Key takeaways

Here are some lessons from the podcast I have put into my own words based on Jaryd’s discussion.

On choosing a niche:

Jaryd made two really good observations here.

First, the niche that you have on your website needs to be able to be talked about by others. Futures are really technical or difficult topic then the chances that somebody else can write about this on your behalf will be very low.

The second is that the niche needs to be specific while extendable. If you find that you've run out of topics after say 100 articles, then you will limit the revenue potential of the website.

On how many sites to have in a portfolio:

This is really helpful to have somebody put a number on this, with some parameters around how to think about this question.

Basically, as I understood it, you want to try and diversify for risk whilst also having a big enough website to work with. For example, websites because you can't handle that many. On the other hand, you may not want one single website as your whole portfolio if it is worth millions of dollars because of the vulnerability associated with this.

On operating content sites:

This is one of my favourite takeaways from this episode but Jaryd shared a really interesting operating system for content websites.

If you have a content writing service, such as niche website builders, the one that Jared recommends, then you can pair this with a link-building service to cover your bases. In the end, you may end up playing mainly a strategic role in working out what content needs to be produced and what content can be cut or improved.
