Oman’s Highlights Oman is an incredibly diverse and beautiful country. Oman’s coastline stretches over 3000 km. With only a handful of dive centers, diving is still up and coming. Muscat, Musandam and Salalah are the three main diving destinations. In Muscat, Daymaniyat Islands, Fahal Island and Bandar Khayran are the three most famous diving locations. Muscat, Oman’s capital, has some of the best diving in the whole country. With dive sites located from the shore and shore boat rides, the dive sites are endless. Daymaniyat islands are a protected marine reserve, home to marine bird colonies, nesting turtles, stunning reefs and an abundance of marine life. Whale sharks migrate past from July to October. Zebra sharks and black-tips can be spotted all year-round. Fahal Island, with its nickname of shark island, is home to sharks, rays, a wreck and an interesting swim-through. Bandar Khayran features a stunning limestone coastline and over 20 dive sites to explore, each teeming with life and incredibly diverse. During nearly every dive in Muscat and in Oman itself you will be able to spot a sea turtle. Home to five of the world’s species of turtles, with four making Oman one of their prime nesting spots. There is a variety of hard and soft coral, home to reef fish, turtles, rays, crustaceans and huge honeycomb moray eels. Musandam, located along the Gulf of Oman, has an incredible diversity of marine life. The landscape across Oman is truly remarkable and in Musandam with its steep mountains and beautiful bays, there’s a range of sites waiting to be explored. Further down south, Mirbat near Salalah has some of the best diving in Oman. In Mirbat, you can find large pelagic animals swimming past. Over 22 species of whales and dolphins can be found in these waters. The dive sites here feature stunning coral reefs and kelp forests. Diving conditions can be quite tough and some are reserved for more experienced divers. When is the best time to go diving in Oman? Diving is possible in Oman at any time of the year. In Salalah, diving is not possible between June and September as this is the monsoon season known locally as khareef. The best month to dive in the South is between October and May. In the North, the summer time air temperature can reach over 50°C. Thus, the best time to dive in Oman is April to May and September to October. The month of May has the best visibility. Water Temperature: Drops to 19°C in winter and rises to 30°C in summer. Currents: None to strong Visibility: 5 to 30 meters depending on the site Oman’s best dive sites Al Munassir, Bandar Khayran An old British Navy ship that was purposefully sunk in 2003 to create an artificial reef. It is now home to a few giant honeycomb moray eels and a few nudibranchs. Due to its depth, you need to be an advanced open water diver to dive here. Aquarium, Daymaniyat Islands At a depth of 20 meters, this dive site can be enjoyed by all levels of divers. Beware, sometimes this site has a strong surface current. This site is located in the middle of the ocean and appropriately named Aquarium. As you descend, you will be met with all types of marine life from turtles, cuttlefish and rays. The elusive mola mola has even been spotted here. Eagle Bay, Mirbat At a depth of 5 to 15 meters, this site is suitable for all levels. This secluded bay and dive site has a rocky formation covered in hard and soft corals. The site has a sandy bottom perfect for spotting sleeping rays. Large honeycomb moray eels, eagle rays, turtles and cuttlefish can be found here. About the country Oman has something for everyone.
