On this episode of Ask The Experts, Alka Sharma talks about why communication is important and why we need to be effective communicators and the four important ways we can become better communicators

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Be clear and concise: Most people have short attention spans, so whether you’re communicating through written correspondence, via text or email, you have to be short and succinct with the message you’re relaying. People don’t have time to read a long-winded message.
  • Don’t make assumptions: When we make assumptions we’re reading between the lines and a lot of times we misconstrue what people are saying. My method of communicating back to anyone is simply to ask what they meant by what they said. When you ask questions back they are more likely to reply back to you in a positive way.
  • Listen with empathy: Listen with an open mind, by more attentive and responsive to the other person’s conversation. If you’re present in the moment with you clients and you’re more attentive and responsive you are going to give back a more emotional and committed response top them. Let them talk and share their experience, don’t interrupt, that’s a sign of disrespect.
  • Think before you speak: Formulate a plan in your mind as to what you’re going to share and say. When it comes to public speaking, when you go on stage and the audience don’t know you or what you’re talking about, before you even speak, the audience will pick up on your tone and choice of words. How did you plan ahead of time? Did you put a lot of thought into the message you were going to share and how effective is the message you’re communicating to your audience?

BEST MOMENTS‘We communicate every day of our lives, whether it’s by spoken word, written correspondence or body language.’
‘Communication helps build meaningful relationships.’
‘An effective communicator is one that is able to relay his or her message to other people effectively so that the receiver understands what you have said. If people pay attention to you that means you have been effective in what you have said and relayed to them. If they don’t understand they just walk away.’
‘If you’re not wary of your social cues and your etiquette you are going to lose out in life because non-verbal cues and communication through eye contact, handshakes, or touching is very important, more so then verbal Non-verbal accounts for 55% of how we perceive people and how they perceive you.’
