Two former college baseball coaches analyze the Major League Baseball Landscape through a modern player development scope, combining new age analytics with player development initiatives to explain the game of baseball we see on the field every single night.
Dave Lawn spent 40 years coaching college baseball — Cal, USC, Nevada, Arizona, TCU, and a stop-along-the-way at Cal State Fullerton where he was, by his own count, "the first player development guy" in the country back in 2013. He walked away from the sport six weeks ago. He sat down with Trevor to talk not about pitching or tech or metrics, but about what the game actually teaches you when you give it 40 years of your life.
This is an episode about the curriculum baseball hides in plain sight. Coaches, players, parents — the lessons work for anyone who's ever competed or led.
A few of the ones Dave lays out:
Take joy in the joy of others. The bulk of a coaching career gets spent chasing the dogpile and the next job. The joy that actually holds up is the joy in the players — not your own.
The rhythm of baseball is a life skill. Four games a week means kids have to sit on a bad outing for days. That's where the mental training really happens, and it doesn't happen in a sport with a game every night.
The real reward isn't the trophy — it's the sheriff, the doctor, and the wedding invite. Dave tells the Bobby Kalon story (Cal fireballer at 82 mph → Navy medical school → 15 years running a naval air station clinic) and the John Hardy story (1987 Contra Costa kid → Solano County sheriff). Both still call. Both still send updates. That's the actual scoreboard.
"Not blaming, complaining, or explaining." The Peyton Toley postgame interview after a rough start that Dave sent to every pitcher in the room. Own it. Reset. Go pitch six shutout innings against a big-league team the next time out.
"Uncoachable" is a cuss word. The question a scout should be asking pre-draft isn't "is he coachable" — it's does he let you help?
Great coaches are master communicators — and chameleons. One kid walks into an exit meeting needing one thing. The next kid walks in needing the opposite. The best coaches read the room and adjust — and the best of them know when to shut up and get out of the way. Oklahoma's title team as the reference point.
The 10,000-foot view is what private instruction is missing. A track-man report and a video clip can't see the conniption fit in the dugout between innings. That's where the coaching actually happens.

A BDH built around two stories — the All-Star Game voting problem, and the Paul Skenes conversation that's dominating the pitching internet right now. The Skenes segment is the whole show, and Trevor and Dan land on a single thesis:
This isn't a velocity story. It's a command story.
Everyone on social media is diagnosing Skenes' regression through velocity — the fastball is down over a mile from last year, the arm slot is three degrees higher, the release point looks different, and the stuff-plus profile has shifted. The show unpacks each of those and shows why none of them are the story.
The story is command. Skenes' entire elite-level ceiling is built on the ability to nibble the top of the zone with his four-seam and paint the arm side "coffee cup." That command is a timing product — same spot at release every pitch — and the second the timing gets a little off (a mechanical adjustment, a slot change, a bad-feel day), the command goes with it. Once the feel comes back, so does the ceiling. He'd be effective at 92 with this command profile.
The middle of the episode gets into:
The intentional-regression theory: is Skenes throttling max velo on purpose to build long-career health? Or is the command actually the reason the effort has come down?
Max effort creates command. Guys with real arms can't throw at 80% because the conviction unlocks the delivery. Skenes' elite level is the commanded max-effort four-seam, not the raw number.
The Phillies problem: 12 runs in 9 innings against Philadelphia this year — Trevor's take is you have to almost remove those two starts to see the actual baseline.
Pitch mix shift: four-seam still #1, changeup usage up, sinker command has slipped, and how each of those cascades into how he attacks lefties.

The same weekend, two of the most impressive pitching performances of the year — one from a junior at Georgia, one from a second-year Brewer. Joey Volchko punched out 15 over a complete game against Texas in the CWS opener. Jacob Misiorowski punched out 15 over a complete game against the Phillies on 95 pitches. Same number. Different level. Same underlying story about what good pitching development actually looks like.

Volchko in Athens — a high-upside Stanford transfer who'd been told for years to throw a four-seamer he couldn't throw. Georgia and Coach Wes Johnson got him in the lab, saw the natural cut, threw out the four-seam, made the cutter the number one, reframed the slider as a harder bullet, added a sweeper, then layered in a seam-shifted-wake sinker in the fall. They didn't change the athlete. They identified what he did best and built the repertoire around it. Result: a 15-K complete game on the biggest stage of his career, and a first-round draft profile.

The University of Arizona had one of the best turnarounds in the country from their pitching staff in Coach Kevin Vance & John DeRouin's 1st season in Tucson, as they lowered their staff ERA from 5.97 to 4.46 in 1 year. We were able to take a look inside their brand new Kinatrax pitching lab, where they talk in detail about how they develop pitchers. They talk in detail about how they utilize the technology, and how they put their pitchers in a position to succeed.
