We are called to reflect God’s love and goodness through our families and the way we treat one another. The blessings of God are meant to be passed from one generation to the next. Conversely, relational dysfunction and vices also can pass from one generation to the next. One example of this is found in the story of Joseph in the Bible. Just as Joseph’s father experienced the negative effects of favoritism, he also favored Joseph over the rest of his brothers. This caused his brothers to despise Joseph to the point of plotting his murder. In our relationships in our family and even outside our home, such as work, we too can cause fractures and pain in our relationships if we fall into favoring people over others.
