The emotions and ideas in Bob Dylan’s work have an expansive reach that extends beyond his fan base. We see threads of these in myriad aspects of our lives. In this episode, Jason Nodler, Founding Artistic Director of The Catastrophic Theatre, discusses how Dylan’s focus on feeling has influenced his approach to writing and directing. He also shares the values he learned from Dylan’s work and how they’ve influenced him throughout his life.
Jason has directed more than 50 productions in Houston, Austin, Atlanta, Providence, Pittsburgh, and New York. His original plays include Bluefinger: The Fall and Rise of Herman Brood, Life is Happy and Sad, Speeding Motorcycle, Meatbar, King Ubu is King, and In the Under Thunderloo. He was recently awarded the Best Director Award for 4:48 Psychosis by The Houston Press, is a NEA/MacDowell Colony fellow, a four-time MAP Fund grantee, and a recipient of an individual artist grant from Creative Capital. He is currently co-directing Sarah Kane’s Cleansed.

Michael explains the biblical references from the title of Groom, we discuss the lyrical changes as sung from those in the lyric books, the various and adventurous rhymes, and Dylan's impassioned delivery. Bob Dylan struggled in many ways in the mid 80's, no matter how you look at it. We talk about the perception and reality of that struggle, along with his triumphs, with Professor Erin Callahan.
Erin often hosts The Dylantantes podcast, is co-author/co-editor of The Politics and Power of Bob Dylan’s Live Performances - a recent book looking at Dylan through the lens of his live setlists, and has another book coming - this one about Bob Dylan in the 1980s. She's a Professor of English at San Jacinto College in Houston, Texas.

Following 18 months after Infidels, nothing about the making of this record - the recording process, the sound, the songs, or even the cover art - suggested that Dylan was on solid footing. The times were a-changin' again.
Yet the music did impress some: Rolling Stone asked: "Is Dylan “back”? Again? One is tempted to trumpet some such tidings. ...Empire Burlesque is nothing as straightforward as a simple return to rock & roll form for Dylan."
In this episode we look at the first proper release in our focus years of 1984-1988, talking with music writer Jim Beviglia about Empire Burlesque and each of the songs it contains.

Dylan fans have always focused on setlists, but this may be the first book to use them as a theme, around which a series of writers look at how the list of songs Bob chooses to sing in any given night or tour has evolved, the different roles certain songs have played over the years, and the larger story or message contained within a sequence of songs (intentionally or not).
Another by-product of the pandemic, The Power and Politics of Bob Dylan’s Live Performances – Play a Song for Me, is anchored by chapters from co-editors Erin Callahan and Court Carney, who are joined by a baker’s dozen of other writers mostly professors, or academics or teachers or working in pursuit of advanced degrees.
The result is a scholarly, thoughtful, interesting, well written and researched book, filled with essays that take a wide range of approaches to Dylan’s work and performance and live shows drill in and expand on different aspects of them.

After over a decade out of print, is is being re-issued in three volumes for it's 50th Anniversary - with the full text and extensive footnotes of the Third Edition reproduced in full.

Only one song from Dylan's 1960s output earned a dedicated chapter in Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1), and it's a song that Dylan never even released until over 20 years later. In this episode we talk to Michael Gray about "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" (later released on Biograph in 1985 and later on Side Tracks).
The song is called out for special attention, because as Michael explains, it is unlike any other in Dylan's catalog before or since. We'll learn why in this episode. In this fourth episode in our Series on the new book release Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan (Vol.1) we talk to author Michael Gray about Chapter Four: Dylan's Use of Language: Toward Complexity. We discuss the changes on songs seen over the course of Dylan's first seven albums - from Bob Dylan through Blonde on Blonde.
The changes Bob Dylan went through from 1962 through 1966 are myriad, as everyone who has listened to the run of albums and live shows from that period knows. Dylan started playing primarily covers of folk songs and other ballads, and quickly became a distinctive songwriter (with early songs including the notable Song to Woody and Blowin In The Wind) who then grew and changed at perhaps the most incredible pace ever (literally) recorded.
One of the many things going on in this period is a trend towards complexity of lyric. It's a long way from 'How Many Ears Can One Man Have' to 'Your Matchbook Songs and Your Gypsy Hymns'. Michael Gray talks about these changes, illustrates them, and highlights the most interesting of them.

Well over 100 musicians have played in Dylan's band over the past 60 years, and Ray Padgett spoke to nearly 50 of them for his new book 'Pledging My Time - Conversations With Bob Dylan Band Members'. In this episode we talk with Ray about the book and all these interesting conversations.
Ray is responsible for the "Flagging Down The Double E's" newsletter (via Substack) which focuses usually on Live Dylan Concerts but drove the initial interviews that he conducted over the past two plus years which fill the book. Ray talked with famous names - like Jim Keltner and Ramblin' Jack Elliot - and lesser known players like Luther Rix and Bobby Valentino - but throughout he got great stories and information about the music, the process, and of course, the man.

The first serious book to analyze and critique the work of Bob Dylan was Michael Gray's Song & Dance Man: The Art of Bob Dylan - and it's back in print after over a decade, in a new 50th Anniversary Series. To celebrate we're doing our own series of interviews with Gray, walking through the book to create a kind of commentary track - reviewing and expanding on his thoughts. This episode is the first in that series.
The reviews that have been made of the previous three editions of the book are stellar: "Song & Dance Man III is probably the greatest book about the work of a single popular musician ever to have been published. ” said The London Review Bookshop, as on example. It was over seven years ago that we learned of 'Bob Dylan's Secret Archives' from The New York Times, and just over a year since the Bob Dylan Center opened those archives up to visitors in Tulsa OK. On the anniversary, we sat down in Tulsa with Center Director Steven Jenkins to talk about the Center, the first year and the future.
Steve arrived just a bit before the Center's opening, and has been the public face and driving internal and external force every since. We talked about the successes the Center has had in it's first year, and dive into many issues about membership benefits, managing the expectations of super fans, delivering an experience that covers a topic and high and wide as Dylan to both casual and serious fans at the same time, and the plans and possibilities they hold for the future of the Bob Dylan Center.

If you've been to the Dylan Center, you know it's not your typical museum - they've managed to build a facility that exposes Dylan content from many different directions without feeling either limited or chaotic. When Bob Dylan returned as a solo acoustic recording artist in the early 90's, many were surprised. A lot of folks thought they would never again hear Bob alone with a guitar. But few thought if they did, the playing would be described as "magnificent, skilled, exciting" guitar work - as it was called by today's guest.
While it's often noted that Dylan's lyrics aren't meant to stand alone on the page, the music that accompanies them just doesn't get as much attention or discussion as those famously over-analyzed lyrics. Music is harder to write about, and very few have managed to do it well and to make their ideas accessible to all of us listeners who lack our own musical knowledge, experience, and even vocabulary.

Eyolf Østrem is a Norwegian Musicologist and Dylan fan who has taken on that challenge. For years at DylanChords.com and more recently at Dylanology.substack.com he has taken to transcribing and explaining the musical side of Bob Dylan. He recently turned his magnifying glass and microscope and keyboard onto Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong - perfect timing for us.
His recent series of posts (links below) dive in deep and explain through examples the new methods and inventive / expressive ways that Dylan makes the sounds that make these albums so enjoyable and compelling. Recently he joined us to share more of his thoughts on that exact topic.
It turns out, perhaps not surprisingly, that Dylan is just as compelling and idiosyncratic - as well as accomplished and effective - with his guitar as he is with his pen. Listen as Eyolf explain it to us in ways that can offer new things to listen for and new ways to enjoy 90's acoustic Dylan.

The World Gone Wrong album cover stands out amongst all the Dylan covers - Bob has a top hat on, the colors are vibrant, and he has a detached look that doesn't exude the confidence you find on all of his other covers. The picture was taken during the filming of a video for Blood In My Eyes, and it's one of dozens of amazing photographs taken by Ana Maria Vélez Wood.
Ana Maria is a professional dancer, choreographer, and an accomplished singer-songwriter, and someone who always takes photographs. Friend Dave Stewart knew that, so when Dylan called for an impromptu video Dave call Ana Maria to take the still photographs.

The result was the album cover, but also a series of amazing photos later displayed in Sweden and London at Gallery Exhibitions called 'Blood In My Eyes'. You can see many of these photos on Ana Maria's website.

In the third book in the Troubadour Tales series, Keith Miles and his co-authors take us on a tour through Dylan's Minnesota homeland via a series of short stories about the homes he lived in, the girls he dated, the places he went, the people he knew, and the events of his life.
Like the previous books about London and New York, the book is tour guide that can be used from the comfort of your home or in a backpack during a visit. You'll learn about every spot where something historic - at least in Bob Dylan terms - happened.

Bob Dylan knew - and often played - most of the songs he covered on Good As I Been To You for his entire professional life. In this episode we examine the original versions of these songs (there are always more than a few) and other interesting covers that have been done since Dylan's 1992 release.

Michael Gray invented analysis and criticism of Bob Dylan songs with the 1972/3 release of Song & Dance Man. And over the last 50 years and through two major updates of that book, he has remained one of our best and most eloquent of the Dylan scholars.
In this episode we talk about the Good As I Been To You / World Gone Wrong chapter from Song & Dance Man III. The discussion is centered around quotes from the book, I read them and Michael reacts and expounds on his thoughts. We cover 10 of the album's 13 songs.

It's often been observed that the road to Time Out Of Mind began when Dylan recorded two solo acoustic albums in the early 90's. Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong were yet another unexpected twist in Dylan's path, but by playing alone, at home, on songs he'd known for years, the feeling is Bob reconnected with some important basics that allowed him to regroup and then go forward to write the amazing songs that came out in the late 90's and through the 2000's.
In this first episode of Season Two, we start our look at these two albums, placing them in time, hearing a bit about what it was like to make them, and rediscovering the first reactions of some well known critics and reviewers.
A special highlight of this episode is an interview with GAIBTY and WGW engineer Micajah Ryan. This interview was done in 2017 by Brian Sword of The Double Stop podcast. In the full interview Micajah talks about his entire career for about 90 minutes, but here we just feature some of his discussion of working with Bob Dylan. Big thanks to The Double Stop podcast and Brian Sword for permission to include that interview in this episode.
Later in the episode we look at what Stereophile, RollingStone, Entertainment Weekly, and some other prominent reviewers said about GAIBTY in their initial reviews. We'll look at WGW reviews in an upcoming episode.
We'll continue this dive into Good As I Been To You and World Gone Wrong for the next batch of episodes, looking more closely at the songs, the time, the live shows, and the legacy of these great records.

Make You Feel My Love is a song that has received a lot of attention - but not entirely out of admiration - a lot of Dylan fans just don't like it. On this episode Laura Tenschert talks about the song and those reactions.
Laura is a writer, podcaster and musician who runs Definitely Dylan where she looks at art and creativity through the lens of Bob Dylan’s work. Whirly Gig is a new book that looks at the making of Time Out Of Mind. Today we talk with author John Lewis who shares his insights based on a longtime friendship with TOOM Musician Jim Dickinson and his time in The Bob Dylan Archives in Tulsa - where he was able to listen to all 500 audio files from the Time Out Of Mind Sessions.
John Lewis is a writer and curator living in Cambridge, MD. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Spin, The Oxford American, and many other publications. His profile of Ike Turner was included in The Oxford American Book of Great Music Writing. Lewis taught in Maryland Institute College of Art’s Curatorial Practice MFA program and co-curated Yummm! The History, Fantasy, and Future of Food, a 2017 exhibition at the American Visionary Art Museum. He is currently working on a documentary film about Globe Poster.
We talk about his relationship with Dickinson, what Dickinson learned from his time with Bob Dylan, what John heard in Tulsa on the Time Out Of Mind Tapes, the relationship between Dickinson and Daniel Lanois, and more.

It turns out Fragments wasn't the last Time Out Of Mind release for the year. Paul Sinclair of SuperDeluxeEdition.com joins us today to talk about this exciting new Audiophile release. Steven Hyden wrote the liner notes for The Bootleg Series 17: Fragments - The Time Out Of Mind Sessions, and in this episode talks to us about the assignment, his assessment of Bob Dylan in 1997, and how the narrative of the times stood up to 25 years of additional Bob Dylan output.
Hyden is a respected music writer, and his latest book is called Long Road: Pearl Jam and the Soundtrack for a Generation, and he's also the author of Your Favorite Band is Killing Me, Twilight of the Gods and several others. He writes regularly at Uproxx where he is officially the ‘Cultural Critic’, Plus: he has a new Bob Dylan Podcast focusing on Live shows from the Never Ending Tour - called Never Ending Stories.
His essay in the CD and LP box sets talks about how Dylan was positioned and perceived in the media around 1997, and how that narrative didn’t exactly align with reality and how 25 years has utterly destroyed the popular assumptions of the time.
In this conversation we talk about how Steven got the gig, what he was asked to do, his thoughts about summing up 60 years of Bob Dylan, what it meant at the time for a 55 year old to make an album, the role Daniel Lanois played, what the new mix and outtakes say about the album, his thoughts on the live tracks that are included, the future of the Bootleg Series, and much more.

Michael Brauer was recently tapped to remix Time Out Of Mind, for the Fragments Bootleg Series 17 box set. Reimagining an Album Of The Year is no small task, and Michael tells us his goals for the project, what he was asked to do, and how he went about rebuilding this classic album and give it a new sound and yet be extremely true to the 'feel' of the original.
Michael has mixed four previous installments of Bob Dylan's Bootleg Series, and did the 2003 remixes for Bringing It All Back home and Blonde On Blonde. He also did the1999 Street Legal remix. He's a Bob Dylan fan and we discuss how he feels about radical changes to classic albums. In addition to the main album mix, we also talk about the first ever Dolby Atmos Mix for a Bob Dylan album.
Michael Brauer has won 7 Grammy's in a career that includes work for Coldplay, The Rolling Stones, Prefab Sprout, Deacon Blue, James Brown, Aerosmith, Jeff Buckley, David Byrne, Tony Bennett, Billy Joel, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney, Ben Folds, Pet Shop Boys, Willie Nelson, KT Tunstall, Martha Wainwright) Prefab Sprout, Leonard Cohen, Pet Shop Boys, and man others. Brauer’s career began as an engineering intern at MediaSound Studios in New York City in 1976, working his way through the ranks to become a staff engineer in 1978. His first commercial break came when he mixed and engineered Luther Vandross’ debut double-platinum selling album Never Too Much (Epic) in 1981, as well as its follow up platinum album Forever, for Always, for Love (Epic) in 1982.

Dirt Road Blues is a special song on the Time Out Of Mind Album for a number of reasons. Longtime Dylan Fan/Writer Matthew Zuckerman talks to us today about this song and how it fits - and doesn't fit - on the album.
Zuckerman is a freelance writer who has written for the International Herald Tribune, the Dylan fanzine Isis, and many others. He's currently working on a memoir of blues musician Kevin Brown, and is the co-convener of music events for the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institute where he has presented on Bob Dylan as well as Louis Armstrong.

Sean Latham is the Director of the Tulsa University Institute for Bob Dylan Studies, which is related to The Bob Dylan Archives and The Bob Dylan Center. He is also the Pauline McFarlin Walter Endowed Chair of English and Comparative Literature at the University of Tulsa where he serves as Editor of the James Joyce Quarterly and founding director of the Oklahoma Center for the Humanities.
The Institute for Bob Dylan Studies at Tulsa University is the academic arm associated with The Bob Dylan Center and Archives, and they host conferences and events, publish, and do research and writing on Bob Dylan.
The Institute produced the The World of Bob Dylan conference in 2019, before there was a Bob Dylan Center, and before the Archives were even in a permanent home. It was a fantastic event that attracted 500 Dylan researchers and lovers to Tulsa for 3-days of presentations and special events.
They've hosted a bunch of events since then, and are now gearing up for The World of Bob Dylan 2023 in early June. They're currently (through 1/15) accepting proposals papers or presentations for this event. Sean tells us what they learned in 2019, what they're planning for 2023, and a lot more.

Scott Bunn writes a lot about Dylan songs at his ReclinerNotes.com website - and he's covered Highlands from Time Out Of Mind twice. In this episode he reads his entire first full look at Highlands, and then shares with us a realization/theory he has about "The Waitress" which was the subject of his second post.
Scott talks about the musical inspiration for Highlands, the place he describes, the humor, the Neil Young reference, and more. His 'waitress revisited' discussion talks about the debt Dylan might owe to Terry Allen for his song 'The Beautiful Waitress' (iTunes) (Spotify) (Tidal).
He also took questions and we talk about both posts and Dylan/Time Out Of Mind in general.

Jon Stewart is a musician and author, and holds a PHD in Music and is a huge Bob Dylan fan. His recent book is called Dylan, Lennon, Marx, and God and he talked to us about what the research he did for that book tells us about Dylan in relation to the songs on Time Out Of Mind.
As a musician, Jon plays guitar in The Wedding Present, and has appeared on albums by KD Lang and others. He is also an active educator, as a Course Leader at British and Irish Modern Music Institute in Brighton (BIMM).
Here he shares thoughts on Bob Dylan and Time Out Of Mind primarily in relation to how aspects of Dylan's education and the philosophies he has adopted impact the album. He presents his thoughts, and then we chat about both the themes he has shared, and all things Dylan and Time Out Of Mind.

Jeff Slate is a musician, writer, and radio host with a long and deep connection to Bob Dylan. He wrote the liner notes to the More Blood, More Tracks edition of The Bootleg Series, and has done several events for The Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa. He shares his insider's view and personal memories on Time Out Of Mind in this episode.
As an artist and performer Jeff has won an ASCAP Award, toured as the opener for Sheryl Crow, worked on a project with Pete Townshend and much more. As a writer his work regularly appears in The Wall St. Journal, RollingStone, Esquire and The New Yorker. He hosts shows on SiriusXM and the BBC. In addition to the Dylan Bootleg Series he's written liner notes for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's 50th Anniversary Box, Shawn Colvin, and others. And he's the co-author of The Authorized Roy Orbison book.

Mark Howard was the Engineer on Dylan's Time Out Of Mind and Oh Mercy. But in three plus decades he's worked with dozens of great artists - Willie Nelson, Robert Plant, Dave Grohl, Rickie Lee Jones, and many many more. And he's photographed all of these experiences.
He has a new book out full of these 'on the job' photographs -- it’s called Recording Icons / Creative Spaces - The Creative World of Mark Howard. It shows the recording studios he's built in unique homes and buildings all over the world, and the work that was done in those spaces.
We talk to Mark about his process, his photography, and the amazing artists and albums he's worked on.

Micheal Gray wrote the first serious critical book on Bob Dylan's work in 1972's Song and Dance Man, and for the 50 years since has remained one of the most respected and important voices even in the very large world that joined him in that effort.
He's expanded Song and Dance Man twice, wrote The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, and his latest work is Outtakes on Bob Dylan - a collection of writing from 1967 to 2021. He's also the author of books on Frank Zappa and Blind Willie McTell, and has written for RollingStone, The Guardian, Melody Maker and many more. The University of York conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Letters in English and Related Literature.
Today Micheal revisits and updates his thoughts on Time Out Of Mind, first expressed in Dylan fanzines and then Song And Dance Man III. He demonstrates his nuanced approach to evaluating and illuminating Dylan's work, and criticizing it when he feels it appropriate.

In hundreds of blog posts and 15 books he's shared an impressive ability to put Bob's work into context of other music, literature, poetry, and art.
He joins us to share some of his findings and thoughts on Cold Irons Bound from his book: Time Out Of Mind - The Rising of an Old Master. He tells us about the songs origin with Drummer David Kemper, he lines the song borrows from Ralph Stanley and The Stanley Brothers, and more.
Following his presentation, is a Q&A with Jochen on this song and they way he approaches Dylan's work.

Robyn Hitchcock is a broadly respected singer-songwriter with a lifetime of connections to Bob Dylan. He saw Bob Dylan perform at the Isle of Wight as a teenager in 1969, became the kind of songwriter that could only exist in the world after Dylan, and has regularly performed and recorded Dylan songs - for decades now.
We asked Robyn to join us as part of our series of discussions with songwriters and performers on Time Out Of Mind, to get his insights on Dylan in the years before TOOM, his first reactions to the album, his thoughts on the production and songwriting, and much more. We heard from a thoughtful man who's deeply considered Dylan and his work - and was kind enough to share those thoughts with us.

How do you listen to Bob Dylan? What do you listen for? Larry Starr is an emeritus professor of music history at the University of Washington, and the author of Listening to Bob Dylan. It's a book that answers the question you might not have thought to ever ask.
The book talks about the 'musicality' of Dylan, and shares ways to understand the devices he uses in his work - melody, harmony, coloring, tone, repetition, silence, sequencing, and many others. In this conversation Larry talks about these items in terms of Time Out Of Mind. For listeners and fans who aren't musicians, it offers new ways to understand and appreciate the work of Bob Dylan.
Mr. Starr also wrote a book on George Gershwin, and on American Popular Music from Minstrelsy to MP3 - and he’s a lifelong Bob Dylan fan.

Wesley Stace was probably first known to Dylan fans by his stage name, John Wesley Harding - when he delivered great songs and albums from the late 80's through the turn of the century - including 'It Happened One Night', 'Here Comes The Groom', 'Awake' and others. This century he's continued to put out fine records and tour under his given name - including the recently released 'Late Style'.
Wes has played a lot of Dylan covers, been to a lot of Dylan shows, and is quite the knowledgable fan -- as you'll hear in this episode. Wes shares his thoughts on Dylan in the 80's and early 90's, his initial reactions to hearing Time Out Of Mind, and his even greater love for Love and Theft.
This is the first in a series of interviews with working musicians, to learn how they think about TOOM and Dylan in general. It's also the first of two episodes with Wes, as he had so many interesting things to say that two episodes were necessary.

Ray Padgett is an expert on cover songs. He runs the Cover Me website that reviews and discusses all kinds of cover song performances, and published a book called Cover Me that take a deep dive into twenty of the most iconic cover songs in history (including All Along The Watchtower and Make You Feel My Love).
We asked Ray if he would share his knowledge and impressions of Time Out Of Mind cover songs, and he gave us a fun and interesting presentation. This podcast captures that event, and a little Q&A afterwards.

Scott Warmuth is a Dylan fan, scholar, and researcher who is known as the guy who discovered the 'late period' writing style of Bob Dylan by identifying hundreds of influences and borrowed lyric sources across all kinds of books, movies, magazines, and more.
In this episode he points his magnifying glass at Time Out Of Mind and shares with us some of the sources that 'inspired' Dylan as he was creating the songs on this album.
We'll hear about Henry Rollins, Johnny & Jack, and others who's writings have inspired or empowered the lyrics of Bob Dylan.

Graley Herren is the author of 'Dreams and Dialogues in Dylan's Time Out Of Mind, and a professor (Chair of the English Department) at Xavier University in Cincinnati Ohio. He specializes in Modern Irish Literature, Modern Drama, Samuel Beckett, Don DeLillo, and Bob Dylan.
He is the author of Samuel Beckett's Plays on Film and Television, The Self-Reflexive Art of Don DeLello, and numerous articles and chapters on various 20th and 21st century artists.
The premise of the book is that Time Out Of Mind represents a series of dreams, and that the songs on the album make up a single connect song cycle. From there Graley finds what he calls three ‘dimensions of experience’ filtered through the songs -- The first is Murder Ballads, the second is Religious Allegory, and the last is Race in America. The bulk of the book is made up of him showing how the lyrics and songs reflect each of these dimensions.
Professor Herren’s book goes deep into the possible meanings and motivations behind the songs on Time Out Of Mind. He’ll present thoughts on how ‘murder ballads’ might play a role in explaining the unified message on this album.
In the talk you’re about to hear, Graley summarizes and gives examples of his analysis of the lyrics of Time Out Of Mind in relation to Murder Ballads. This is a recording of a talk he gave to our Premium Members a few months ago, and in the interest of time he narrowed his focus to share just a sliver of one of the book’s three theses.

Mark Howard is an accomplished Engineer, Producer and Musician - who worked with Bob Dylan as the Engineer on two of his most loved albums: Oh Mercy and Time Out Of Mind. In this conversation Mark tells us about the everything from the very beginning when Dylan drove himself up to the Teatro Studio for a different project, to 3am phone calls when Mark encouraged Bob to come finish the songs they'd recorded and then put out Time Out Of Mind.
In between we hear some great stories from inside the recording studio.

Time Out Of Mind followed 20 years in which Dylan was not always loved. In this episode we look at his career from 1977 through 1996 to understand where he was and to highlight how remarkable a comeback this album really was. We'll revisit the less successful years and see how his relationship with fans, the press, and the culture had changed, and how it was impacted by the release of Time Out Of Mind.
We've lived for 25 years in which Dylan is universally revered - and the other period we hear about is the 60's and early 70's, when he was at the peak of his power and fame. This episode talks about the time between those two, when Dylan was out of favor, out of ideas, and low on energy. It was the land before TOOM.
In this episode Howard Sounes shares the results of the extensive work he did writing the biography 'Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan' which was recently updated for Dylan’s 80th. Howard tells us what he learned about the man, his life in the early 90's before Time Out Of Mind, and then the making of and release of the album.
